I'll be on PCNC's Night Talk: Get To The Point! program TONIGHT.
I'll be the guy who kinda, sorta, almost looks like an older pudgier less intelligent Chris Potter.

NIGHT TALK!

Maria's on my TEEVEE now!
First segment.
Maria more than held her own. Some typical tea party talking points about how "we don't have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem."
Maria pointed out that taxes are at a historical low. One panelist posed the laughable position of lowering the debt ceiling.
Second segment
Second segment is on Marcellus fracking. Typical discussion. Right wingers doubting marcellus shale drilling is safe and that there's no need for a tax.
Third segment
This segment is on gay history being taught in California. Dale McCoy, the tea party guy, thinks it's "reprehensible." He confuses the contributions of gay Americans with teaching about "homosexuality." He doesn't want "homosexuality" "foisted on him." Maria thinks that everyone should be included in history.
Dale embarrassed himself in this segment.
Fourth segment
Gay marriage.
Maria has to explain the phrase "tyranny of the majority" to Bob Hillen. He asked where in the Constitution it's found. Dale McCoy doesn't understand why gay couples want to be recognized by the state. Dale doesn't think that two men or two women are the healthiest of situations. Dale doesn't understand why the gays have to be so public. PJ Maloney seems kinda perturbed with him. Dale, while he says he doesn't have a problem with what two people do in the privacy of their own homes, still thinks that homosexuality is abnormal.
Maria's doing a good job on this segment. Dale, not so much.
Fifth segment
Continuation of gay marriage discussion. Dale doesn't like the idea that they're teaching homosexuality as normal. I'm thinking Bob Hillen must be relieved that Dale is there. By comparision, Bob looks less nutty.
Sixth segment
DREAM ACT
Conservatives on the panel just want the immigration laws to be enforced. Dale thinks we should pull out all the troops out of Libya and then they should be posted on the Mexican border. Dale wants the unemployed to harvest crops. Two years of unemployment is too long for Dale.
Seventh segment
The Pirates
First segment.

I'll be a panelist on tomorrow's PCNC TV's NightTalk: Get to the Point (Channel 35 on Comcast.)
The show will air live on Friday, July 22nd from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM (with repeats at 10:00 PM and 2:00 AM).
The program commonly features conversation on a wide range of topics local to Pittsburgh, the Southwestern Pennsylvania region and some national items. Expect anything from the Pittsburgh Pirates to Marcellus Shale.
The host will be P.J. Maloney.
Also appearing will be Dale McCoy whose Blue Collar Commentary blog can be found on conservative radio host Glen Meaken's website. I heard that McCoy describes himself as a "Tea Party Democrat." (Say what?) Don't know who the third panelist will be.
Tune in -- it should be interesting!

A priest, the chairman of Pittsburgh's GOP and a pro choice blogger walk into a bar...

Actually we -- Bob Hillen, Rev. Frank Almade and I -- walked onto PCNC's NightTalk set last night along with the show's host P.J. Maloney. Abortion, LGBT issues ,and the role of women in the Catholic Church were discussed (along with some local issues).
I think that I could have made far more specific points if I didn't need to spend so much of my time trying to correct the spin that the Stupak Amendment merely banned the use of federal funds from paying for elective abortions.
That seems to be all I do these days.
[sigh]
Still, it was fun and as a former Catholic I did have a "Holy Shit!" moment when I saw that I'd be discussing abortion with a priest. I could not resist in the Green Room introducing myself to Father Almade by saying, "Hi, I guess we know why we're both here. I'm a pro choice feminist blogger." I'm guessing that he doesn't hear that a lot.
The conversation was all very civil, but I did have to resist doing a spit-take when Almade said that the Church considers men and women to be equal and I was compelled to rejoin with "some are more equal than others."
Sadly, I did not get across the point that there is a problem with tax-exempt churches using church resources for political purposes (such as issuing letters to Mass participants about the Stupak Amendment) and how the Catholic Church seems to only target Democratic pro choice Catholic politicians vs. their Republican, uh, brethren (think Kerry vs. Giuliani). Thankfully someone was able to make the tax-exempt point recently on MSNBC:
O'Neill: You know that's the first thing that I said. I don't know wherethe Internal Revenue Service is, but I hope they're paying attention.
There does seem to be an awful lot of politicking going on by the Catholic Church lately what with them dictating amendment language to Congress, issuing an ultimatum to end social service programs if they have to follow the law, and contributing hundreds of thousands of dollars to the successful effort to prevent legalization of gay marriage in Maine.

Maria on Night Talk

8:15pm
PJ Maloney (the host) has been correcting Rose Tennent for the past ten minutes or so. He's corrected Rose about Health care in Canada and Massachusetts.
So far.
Maria's doing a fine job.
8:20
Maloney to Rose (paraphrase): What you just said has no basis in reality.
He complained about all the disinformation in the current Health Care debate (Rose denied any misinformation) then corrects Rose's many misstatements.
It's fun to watch!
8:25 Les Ludwig is soaking up all the time during the discussion of the PA State Budget. I don't really understand what he's saying. Or why he's there.
8:48 Maria and Rose agree on the sexism faced by Senator Clinton and Governor Palin in the last election.
8:56 Maloney had to cut Les off a few too many times. He just kept talking about stuff no one (ok *I*) had any idea what he meant.
Maria did a great job. Rose looked ridiculous.

Night Talk on PCNC

Not really sure where to go with this.
I tried calling into Night Talk tonight. Rose of "Quinn and Rose" was on defending Right Wing radio talkshow hosts against the lies and manipulations of MediaMatters.org. When they started in on Rush ("The Addict") Limbaugh's "phony soldiers" smear I just had to call in to correct Rose's spin on it. She said that Rush had nothing to apologise for, that it was all a lie, taken out of context...blah-blah-blah. You know the drill.
Imagine my surprise, however, when I called in and was told that while they DO have a new studio, they DON'T yet have the speakers hooked up TO that studio. So while they flash the number to call into the show, you can't actually, you know, call in to talk on the air.
I am hoping it's just a technical thing - something to be fixed easily and quickly.
In any event, the upshot (at least at this point) is that if you call in, you give your question or comment to an otherwise very nice sounding voice. She will then relay the question or comment to Pintek who, I guess, can then ignore it if he chooses.
Hardly a healthy debate, doncha think?
Why won't Mike Pintek take questions on the air?

Melissa Hart Update

Former Congresswoman Melissa Hart was just on John McIntire's old show Night Talk.
When asked by current host Mike Pintek, "So what are you doing now?" She answered that she's just a lawyer. When asked about the possibility of running for County Executive (the office currently held by Dan Onorato) she laughed. She actually smiled and giggled a little.
Mike, obviously, was looking for something more.
She said she'd considered it - briefly. But she ended things by saying that she wasn't interested in running for that office.
The rest of the interview was the two of them excoriating Congressman William Jefferson for the $90 grand in his freezer. The Congressman from Louisiana will get no defense from me, by the way.
It WAS interesting, however, to hear Missy Hart praise a bill passed in the House today. From UPI:
As we wrote here two years ago, Missy Hart voted for the rule change in the House that would have protected Republican Congressman Tom Delay when HE was indicted

A second resolution, proposed by Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., orders the ethics committee to investigate any member who is indicted or arrested on criminal charges, The Hill reported Wednesday. The resolution passed 387-10, with 15 "present" votes. Why was this interesting to hear?
