Chris Potter: Nearly three decades after leaving home for college, Chris Potter now lives four miles from the house he grew up in -- a testament either to the charm of the South Hills or to a simple lack of ambition. While he's spent much of his career at the Pittsburgh City Paper, his work has been published in a variety of local and national publications, only some of which went out of business afterward. Tracie Mauriello: Washington Bureau Chief Tracie Mauriello was destined for a career in journalism. At 9 she founded the short-lived Davis Street Day, a photocopied scandal sheet -- complete with Slurpee coupons -- which she secretly stuffed into customers’ bags at her mother’s 7-Eleven store in Oakville, Connecticut. At 10, she became editor of the Polk School Post, a position she attained because of her extraordinary skill with numbers. (Her teacher picked a number and the first student to guess it got to be editor.) Since then, she has covered politics and policy at every level of government for newspapers in Connecticut, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Janice Crompton: Janice Crompton has been a reporter at the Post-Gazette for 16 years. She is a graduate of Ringgold High School and studied journalism at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Lillian Thomas: News editor Lillian Thomas started her career writing book-jacket copy, moved to newspapers, then diverted from writing when coverage of an archaeologist made her decide to explore Mexican pyramids for a few years. Life in the present-tense suited her better, and she’s worked as a reporter and editor in Pittsburgh for nearly two decades.
