On the Spot Funder Tonight!
On the Spot FundraiserRemember how awkward middle school was?
Imagine you are a seventh grade girl in foster care. Life is all sorts of awkward. For many local girls like this, some days are worse than awkward. For many girls in foster care or unstable family situations suddenly finding yourself in school, with your period, and WITHOUT supplies is an unfortunately regular occasion
Join us at Nico's to drink beer, and make sure that no girl in our area has to struggle to find these basic necessities!
All your (and Oprah's) favorite things will be back:
Menstrual products
Silent auction
Cookie table
$10 or $5 and a package of pads/tampons.
PS: Wednesday is Pitchers and Pizza night at Nico's, so start training your stomach for the amount of food and beer you will be ingesting.

Blog for Sister Supplies

On the Spot is a local organization which provides menstrual products to girls in local public schools. Many local students do not have access to proper menstrual products for various reasons, including economic hardship and disrupted family situations. Teachers, nurses and administrators at the schools do their best to provide the products, but pay for them out of their own pockets. Even more heartbreaking, young girls stay home from school while menstruating. Think these products are covered under food stamps? They aren't!
This month, On the Spot is teaming up with The Pittsburgh Tote Bag Project to help out these girls. They're asking that you donate menstrual products in a tote bag and bring it to one of the many drop-off spots (see here). Here's some suggestions on what to stock in the bag:
And, please check here and here for more ways that you can help!Box of pads, any size. Variety is good. Special need for pads designed for young girls. Box of tampons, any size. Variety is good. Panty liners, any variety. Unscented is best. New reusable products are welcome, too. If we can give women choices, that’s good. New or gently used tote bags. Backpacks also useful. Sample and trials are fine as long as they are sealed.

That Time of the Month -- On the Spot

We've written about On the Spot before because it's an excellent project. On the Spot raises awareness and much needed funds to purchase pads and tampons for girls who have irregular access to these products. As the co-founder puts it:
For girls in foster care, unstable family situations, economically troubled households and shelters, “that time of the month” brings panic and uncertainty. Many skip school for lack of an alternative. In some local schools local staff provides products out of their own pocket to make sure girls have a back-up.
On the Spot will be holding a back to school fundraiser this Friday:
WHEN: Friday, September 10th
WHERE: Remedy in Lawrenceville (5121 Butler Street)
DETAILS: The event will include a paper bag auction, a cookie table, a DJ, and drink specials. Admission is $10 or $5 and a box of pads/tampons.
Can't make it? Donate products or money here.
On the Spot has collected over 1700 pads and distributed them to seven local schools, a women’s shelter and several after school/summer programs for girls. The project was also able to put together and distribute several hundred personal care bags for boys and girls in need. On the spot is a project of Desiree VanTassel and Jennifer England. All funds and products are distributed by Planned Parenthood of Western Pennsylvania Education Fund, (a 501c3) in schools that have a demonstrated need for help.

Via my PA Representative, Harry Readshaw: "If it becomes law, teen dating violence education would be integrated into middle and high school curriculums. School districts would have to develop an anti-dating violence policy. Age-appropriate education would inform students about the danger of teen dating violence and how they can recognize its warning signs and protect themselves from becoming a victim...You can directly help by signing an online petition on the web site of the bill's prime sponsor, Rep. Scott Conklin, D-Centre County"
Now Aramark has no excuse for not negotiating.

On the Spot

From the folks @ On the Spot:
A fundraiser on February 22 will kick off On the Spot, a new campaign to raise money to provide menstrual products to girls in local public schools. How can these girls receive a proper education if they are missing multiple days every month or are distracted and stressed while in school?Event Details:
On the Spot is an independent project of Jennifer England and Desiree VanTassel in conjunction with Planned Parenthood of Western Pennsylvania Education Department. All funds raised will be donated to Planned Parenthood of Western Pennsylvania and used to purchase supplies.
