CBA Petition

BERJAYA

The PA League of Young Voters is sponsoring a petition to urge Penguins President David Morehouse to negotiate a CBA.

You can sign on @ www.theleague.com/pa/cba

Text of petition:
Attention David Morehouse:

Fifty years ago urban redevelopment devastated the Hill District. At the same time the economy of Pittsburgh and the Southwestern PA region suffered as industry left. You have the power to affect the reversal of these problems and contribute to the solution.

By negotiating a Community Benefits Agreement with the One Hill Coalition and Hill District residents, you are being a good neighbor and taking steps to ensure continued economic growth. We are excited for a new arena, but need you to set the standard for new development in our region. We insist that you and the Penguins negotiate a Community Benefits Agreement with One Hill that is fair to working families and young people of the Hill.

We believe public money should only be used to fund development that benefits the pubic as a whole. Until you and the Penguins negotiate a Community Benefits Agreement with the One Hill Coalition, we will do everything in our power to delay construction of the new arena.

I am joining the PA League along with ACORN, Mon Valley Unemployed Committee, North Side Common Ministries, One Hood Coalition, Pittsburgh UNITED, SEIU, Sierra Club, Pittsburgh Interfaith Impact Network and UNITE HERE in supporting One Hill and the community in this process.

Call for Speakers on CBA at County Council

County Council Meeting on Community Benefits Agreement

Community members, Pittsburgh UNITED and representatives from local organizations including the PA League of Young Voters, ACORN and Sierra Club, will ask County Council on Tuesday, March 25th to pass legislation supporting Community Benefits Agreements.

The public will be provided with the opportunity to highlight the importance of community input on economic development projects and present arguments on two proposed pieces of legislation.
  • The Community Benefits Bill #3656-08 will take power away from the community being directly involved in the drafting of Community Benefits Agreements (CBAs) with developers on proposed projects.
  • Pittsburgh UNITED recommends the passage of the Impact Analysis Bill #3657-08, which establishes process and criteria for considering the social and economic impacts of proposed major development projects.
  • Impact reports, completed by Allegheny County Department of Economic Development, will allow the public to learn about and make comment on projects and their anticipated effects on the community as well as provide information valuable to the creation of a CBA between the community and developer.

    To sign up to speak:
Before 5 p.m. Monday, March 24th, contact John Mascio, Chief Clerk at jmascio@county.allegheny.pa.us or 412-350-6495 and provide the following info:

    New Party, My Ass

If you've been paying any attention, you'd know it's time to regard an endorsement by the Allegheny County Democratic Committee more as a badge of shame than as a clue for who to vote.

    BERJAYA

    Don't reward bad behavior!

    UPDATE FROM THE FIELD:

From Pittsburgh League of Young Voters PAC:
Reports of Ceoffe strong arming people from other campaigns at St. Augustines in Dist 7. The Sheriff actually showed up with an injunction. He is verbally harassing (her exact words were more like "he is being an ass") our election protection volunteer. He took her picture (though to be fair she was video taping his antics).

In district 9 we have a report of a committee person shoving an election protection volunteer (not even one of ours, one of the official non-partisan election protection people) and some other hijinks.
    From the Patrick Dowd Campaign:

After a number of incidents of intimidation of elections officials at St. Augustine’s Parish, serving precincts 1,2, and 3 of the 6th Ward, the Allegheny County Sheriff’s office served a court order on the Ward Chair and all staff at the polling site prohibiting them from preventing poll watchers from entering the polling sites. The court order also instructed the elections officials to permit poll watchers to obtain information as permitted under law.

“Elections officials and poll watchers are not to be interfered with when they are doing their jobs,” said Isobel Storch, attorney for the Dowd campaign.

    Help Tonight!

I had meant to write about this sooner but haven't been able to blog much lately.

There's a great group of people who could really use your help.

The League of Young Voters do much great work that you may not even be aware of as they have a few pacs -- some partisan and some not. They do lots of community work and youth empowerment in addition their political work.

Unfortunately, times are tough and they've lost a big chunk of their funding so they could really use your help.

They're holding their first ever fundraiser tonight:

    Thursday, April 26, 2007
    6:00 – 9:00 PM
207 Bailey Avenue, Mt. Washington, Pittsburgh, PA

Please RSVP with Kimberly at 412-728-2197 or e-mail The League office at rsvp@indyvoter.org .

If you can't make that, you can donate here.

You can see their slate of endorsed candidates at http://youthslate.blogspot.com

Learn more about The League at http://www.pittsburgh.indyvoter.org

    One more thing:
While our "hot, hip YOUNG" Mayor is busy starting up yet one more commission to keep the young here, he's broken yet another promise (see here and here) to The League to show up at one of their candidate forums. That alone should make you want to donate to them. ;-)
