A book highly reccommended by my wife (I haven't read it).  IIRC the child had a botched circumcision and they raised the baby as a girl.  Then, at puberty he proceeded to very much become a "he".  A great deal of psychological scarring was involved, but he got over it.

No, he did not get over it.  He battled depression his entire life and eventually committed suicide.

Somewhere there is a pic of my grandfather in a family photo wearing a dress and long hair at the age of 5.  He didn't have this condition, my family has a tradition of having cruel humor.

When the doctor came in the room and said he was done with my son's circumcision, he added he was very quick.  My thought was, "Don't be quick you bastard, be good."  I checked my son right away, to decide if I was going to have to hurt that man.  I have seen a kid who suffered that fate back when we were all changing to go swimming.  Docs need to take that job very seriously.

I read about this, or a similar population somewhere else.  They said that the fascinating bit was not the biological change, but that in a macho male run society, the little girls who had been harrased and generally dominated by the males, once they transformed, just turned around and acted the exact same way afterwards.

And that's why I think it's so important to be nice & understanding to trans/non-binary people.  There are a LOT more exception cases to the male/female dichotomy than most people realize.

Pretty much. It's also why education is important. A good education helps you understand the perspective of others, and introduces you to concepts that you would otherwise think defies common sense.

I have heard of this guy. He was a victim of some shrinks thinking that upbringing could determine your gender, something like that. Or as the Wiki puts it "Money was a prominent proponent of the "theory of Gender Neutrality"-that gender identity developed primarily as a result of social learning from early childhood and that it could be changed with the appropriate behavioral interventions."

If they'd let the guy alone, maybe he could have figured out some things for himself and maybe not had such a miserable life. But some doctor needed a guinea pig, and here came this guy with the wrecked penis.....
But you never know. It would have been rough either way.

Sounds a lot like an episode of Law & Order.  There were twin boys, one boy suffered the same fate.  Then the twins worked together to murder the doc.

Was the option of not cutting off part of your son's body to appease a vengeful iron-age god not on the table?

Also, blue was the girl color and pink was the boy color.  There was a reason why they were flipped ~40's but I can't remember why.

Right. That's why he had a tormented life and we still know his name today. Because what was done to him, and what happened to him, was no big deal and society completely accepts it.

I know your ex took your balls in the divorce but it's just a figure of speech.

Aw crap.  I thought he had a relatively normal life after his 20s.

The whole family suffered from various mental illness. His mother was clinically depressed and tried to commit suicide. His father became an alcoholic and his twin brother was schizophrenic and fatally overdosed on antidepressants just two years before he blew his brains out with a shotgun.  Some people really get dealt a tough hand in life.
