“I keep my life simple - physically. Most importantly I connect with people in different cultures all the time. […] This constant exposure to new people, mix of older and younger people, and constant exposure different perception on things, keeps things constantly in perspective. How European I am, and how I have a specific way of looking at things.”
- Angelo Vermeulen on what keeps him focused in his space science journeys
Earlier this year six scientists spent four months on Mauna Loa in Hawaii pretending like they were living on the surface of Mars. The leader of the team is our guest, Angelo Vermeulen, a Belgian artist/biologist/philosopher/amazing person. Angelo joined the AMp’s Molly Adams and guest co-host Ernest Wilkins as he talked about the philosophy behind the future of space exploration and why he believes it is humanity’s destiny to go way, way up there. Recently on Practically Speaking, we talked about the impact of Domestic Violence on Women (as well as children). For some women, leaving the abusive situation creates another problem: where to stay. One place that women and children in need of short-term shelter can lean on is “Gabriel’s Horn”, a shelter in Portage, Indiana (whether they’re coming out of an abusive relationship or not).
On October 24th, Gabriel’s Horn will be hosting a wine-tasting event on October 24th at Woodland Park in Portage Indiana. The event will be held from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. in the Sycamore room at the pavilion. For advance ticket sales and more info, you can call the office at 219-242-2799 or 219-364-8018.

This bitter sweet segment of the AMp is from Ernest Wilkin’s last day of guest hosting while Brian Babylon is in Los Angeles living the dream. In lieu of the formal opening of the show Molly Adams and Ernest riffed about the government re-opening and the meager “accomplishments” of those that forced shutdown.

"I was just reading an article earlier this week about how the United States has the highest rate of detaining juveniles, and I’m just wondering what you have to do to go to jail? For the record, I’m not advocating that we put childen in jail, period. I’m just thinking about who are the kids that go to jail and who are the kids that steal cars and bypass TSA agents and sneak on planes and don’t go to jail?" -Coya Paz
The lovely and talented Coya Paz joined host Molly Adams and guest host Ernest Wilkins on the Morning AMp to discuss the nine year old boy who managed to sneak onto an airplane. This week Minnesota family court ordered that the boy be placed in an “out-of-home” facility until their next court date on November 20th. News stories like these raise certain questions about parenting such as; “As a parent, when you are struggling and alone, where do you turn?” and “Do we need to have a national parenting curriculum?”

What happened in Maryville? A case with echoes of Steubenville (drunk young victim, popular jock perpetrators, whole small town gets involved) has reignited a lot of passions as the case was closed and charges dismissed against the alleged rapists. Now the Lt. Gov. of Missouri is calling for the state’s Attorney General to re-open the case. The Council of Feminist Thought, which consisted of the AMp’s Molly Adams, guest co-host Ernest Wilkins, regular panelists Audra Wilson from Practically Speaking and Cassandro Gado from the Step Up Women’s Network discussed the story.

“This [movement] is the kind of thing again that is kind of a double whammy, because here we are adding women to wikipedia […] and the women who are doing it are using a simple form of programming, so ladies programming about ladies who program, kind of a long chain of nerdom”
Molly Adams and guest host Ernest Wilkins kicked off our conversation about nerd culture by discussing CBS’s ‘Big Bang Theory’. Greta Johnsen of the Nerdette Podcast joined the AMp this morning to discuss the mother of computer programming, Ada Lovelace. Recently there has been a surge of Wikipedia edits and additions that aim to draw attention to the monumental input of women in the field of computer technology.

“[On the topic of Twitter] There is a grand tradition of writing that operates aphoristically in short little segments meant to excite […] to give you a little bit of something that metaphorically means something else, and that’s really different from how novels work today, take your John Grisham or your Stephen King, these books that you know are fine but they are just straight up realism […] there all very organized and very contrived […] Proust never surrendered to the core audition.”
It’s been 100 years since the first volume of Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time was published and chances are, you still haven’t read it. Davis Schneiderman, associate professor of English at Lake Forest College, stops by to talk about the work’s continued significance ahead of a discussion tonight with Aleksandar Hemon and David Ellison.

From the first note, Indiana’s Native evokes ominous, somber tones. They start with raspy, aggressive vocals, drenched in distortion and feedback. Then, suddenly, the noise dissipates into mellow melodic strumming, and then picks up again with an equal ferocity, often all within one song.

Personal finance columnist for Red Eye, Megan Crepeau, called in and joined the AMp’s Molly Adams and guest Co-Host Ernest Wilkins this morning as she dished on her latest thoughts about money and YOU. One point that was discussed was how family and friends that constantly give you advice on how you should finance your money may be well intended. And we also may need a little push of motivation when it comes to saving and organizing our money, but the results could backfire, and cause the advised to actually be more careless about their money in spite them. So how can you save money without being obsessed with it and how can you stay confident through poor financial decisions?

In 1789, our fresh, young country put out this hip publication, The Acts of Congress, detailing all the cool new laws that we were operating under. This year, George Washington’s personal copy, with his marginal notes, traveled around the presidential libraries, to then return to its home in Mount Vernon. Historian Thomas B. Allen joined the AMp’s Molly Adams and guest co-host Ernest Wilkins this morning by phone as he talked about Washington’s thoughts about government and what he might say if he looked at Congress today.
