Last night, the GOP introduced pieces of legislation that would essentially “cherry pick” themselves out of the mess they created. These bills would have reopened funding to the Veterans Administration, National Parks, and Washington, D.C.

As you may or may not know, the general services of Washington, D.C. are tied to the national government. The last time the GOP shutdown the government, garbage wasn’t picked up during the entire shutdown.

Now, I applaud the notion that the VA and Washington, D.C. are essential, I do not favor “cherry picking” the parts of the government the GOP likes and don’t like.

For example, the WIC program would not be affected by these pieces of legislation, Student Loan Program is not affected. Meals on Wheels is not affected. Veteran pensions (the non-disability type) are not affected.

In other words, they simply want to pick out the parts of the government that they believe will help raise political points. This is simply another callous inhuman attempt at blackmailing the American People.

Opening National Parks is more important to them than feeding people? What about the other 800,000 government workers that won’t be affected? What about government contractors who had to lay off hundreds of thousands of workers? In other words, what about the REAL American People.

Make no mistake about it. This is pure grandstanding designed to take the heat off. It makes no sense to open parts of the government and piss on the rest of it. Of course, the programs not affected by these 5 pieces of legislation are the exact ones the GOP and Pee Partiers want to get rid of in the first place.

Write, call, email, or tweet your Congressman and tell them we won’t stand for grandstanding while real American People are suffering. If the GOP would have negotiated with the Senate over a budget months ago, we wouldn’t be in this predicament right now.

I don’t care what your political persuasion is, every American deserves the same protections from our government. We are in a situation where we have a Republican Party who is demonstrating everyday that don’t give a damn about us. All they care about is their paycheck and having power.

The only way to get them off their lazy asses is to flood them with negative feedback. So, what are you waiting for, get started and let’s save American from their tyranny while we can!!!

October 1, 2013 dawned today. The sun rose in the sky, most people headed off to work, and the Pee Party held a champagne celebration. So, why are we facing another politically manufactured crisis? There are a lot of people running around Washington, D.C today pointing fingers. Of course, it wasn’t their fault.

It is always easy to point blame. It is always easy to make people afraid of something and then point a finger at who is to blame. After all, that has been the political gamesmanship since Richard Nixon at least. But that doesn’t answer the question of who is really to blame.

Well, I am going to tell you who I think is to blame. I will even give you reasons why I am pointing the finger at them. To be direct, it is the fault of the Republican Party, the Supreme Court, and Racism!

Our nation has faced political divisiveness before. Hell, we even had two members of the government including the Vice President who fought a duel! But through all of that, we somehow managed to maintain some sense of the common good. Unfortunately, that has all passed us by.

The mess really began in 2008. That is when the Supreme Court gave its decision in the Citizens United case. With this ruling, the doors of unlimited anonymous spending were thrown open and special interest groups began organizing politically in order to get their candidate elected and their agenda forced on the American People.

This escalated in 2010. Two years after Barak Obama was elected president and the Affordable Care Act was passed into law, certain elements of our society began raging over the so-called “illegitimate President”. Some of these people called themselves the Tea Party (note: this is the last time I will use this patriotic phrase in reference to them.  I prefer to call them the Pee Party since their belief is “I got mine, piss on the rest of you). We even began to see “political events” being attended by people carrying weapons and the cry of “we need to take our country back” began in earnest. Of course, no one ever said exactly what we were taking it back from, though, the meaning was crystal clear to anyone with half a brain! As a result, the Pee Party rallies started looking more like KKK or Arian Brotherhood rallies than political gatherings.

Of course, the newly empowered Political Action Committees started throwing money in their direction. Additionally, states where the Republican Party gained the majority in the State Legislators began gerrymandering districts to ensure they maintained their control. If you manipulate the district properly, you can make sure that the majority of voters in the majority of districts are whoever you want them to be.  In North Carolina, where I live, we have a district that on the map looks like a squirming worm just to ensure the proper majority of the right kind of voters.

Once the gerrymandering districts were in place, the Pee Party saw its chance to make a statement. They recruited Conservative Political Action Committees to support their nonsense and began putting together candidates.

Of course, it worked. The money donated by the PACs, the gerrymandered districts, and their coded messages won them up to 80 seats in the House. This meant that the Republicans were back in control of the House of Representatives.

Seeing his chance to become the Speaker, John Boehner courted these Pee Partiers for support and in 2011 he was elected as Speaker of the House. Unfortunately for him, in 2012 President Obama was re-elected president. The Republicans lost seats in the House, but not enough for the Democrats to take it back. The country was spared because the Pee Partiers who ran for the Senate shot themselves in the foot so much there was no way any sane person would vote for them. So, the Democrats held onto the Senate.

Now is when the real fun began. It seems that the remaining Pee Partiers ran their election against the Affordable Care Act. They didn’t let the truth get in their way either. They even accused the Act of having “death panels” to get rid of the old people in the country. They put their stock and promises in the idea of repealing the Affordable Care Act.

But, something happened along the way. The President won his re-election and the Democrats kept control of the Senate. So there was no way the Act was going to be repealed. Undeterred, they bullied Speaker Boehner into holding 43 votes to repeal the law over the next two years.

During this two year period, Mr. Boehner totally lost control of the Republican Caucus. And of course, it got even worse. This year the House passed a budget which the Democrats in the Senate voted down. So, in an attempt to make sure all blame went to the Democrats, Mr. Boehner went on television and told the Senate to pass a budget. Then, he said, they would form their joint committee and hammer out the differences so a complete budget could be voted on.

The Senate did just that. They passed a budget that was less than 10% higher than the House budget. Did Mr. Boehner keep his word? Nope! Eighteen times House Democrats put forth resolutions calling on Mr. Boehner to form the joint committee with the Senate. All eighteen times he refused. Therefore, no budget was ever passed and the possibility of a government shutdown loomed on the horizon.

Why did Mr. Boehner reject his own promise to work with the Senate and get a budget deal done? Answer: The Pee Partiers threatened him with the Speakership if he negotiated with either the Democrats in the Senate or with the President. Wanting the TITLE of Speaker more than actually BEING the Speaker, he gave in again.

So, now we have come to main event. The government shutdown that Mr. Boehner said over and over he did not want has come to pass. As a result of this childish behavior, over 800,000 government employees are being furloughed without pay. Millions of small business who depend on the tourist trade at our National Parks, Museums, and National Monuments have lost business and maybe even their entire business. Women and Children who depend upon WIC for food, especially baby formula will soon have to do without. Senior Citizens who depend on Meals on Wheels for their food will have to do without. Retirees of the Military and other government agencies will not receive their pensions and, like the furloughed government employees, face either depleting their life savings or possibly losing their homes, cars, life insurance, and everything else. And wounded veterans who depend on the VA for assistance will soon be turned away including from crisis centers which are vital in helping prevent suicides.

Why is all of this happening? Because the Pee Partiers want to form their own little dictatorship in this country. They refuse to accept the 2012 elections and will do everything to enforce their will on the rest of the country that already rejected them and their absurd ideas. Plus, making that black man who happens to be president look bad is the most important agenda item they have. No matter what it costs everyone else.  Hell, their still getting paid!!!

So, in my opinion, the Supreme Court got the ball rolling. The Pee Party used racism to get a foot in the door of power. The Republican Party embraced these nut jobs to gain control of the House. And, Mr. Boehner who is the weakest Speaker of the House this country has ever had has totally lost control. All that totals one thing. Anarchy and a government shutdown.

That doesn’t even begin to touch on the simple fact that the Pee Partiers actually wetting their pants over their wish to DEFAULT on the government debt which they helped to create.  Madness doesn’t even begin to describe all of this.  I guess they figure once they completely destroy the country, they fantasize that everyone will turn to them to save the day.

By the way, does all of this remind you of anyone else who used these tactics in the past?

Dear Speaker Boehner,

After the House Vote yesterday on the Continuing Resolution which calls for delaying the Affordable Care Act for one year, you said you were “listening to the American People.”

As of this morning, polls indicate that 6 in 10 of the American People DO NOT want a government shutdown over the Affordable Care Act. As of this morning, the same poll indicates that 6 in 10 of the American People DO NOT want you to delay raising the debt ceiling over the Affordable Care Act.

So, Mr. Speaker, please explain to me how you can be listening to the American People when they are obviously against you. Is it possible that you have lost your ability to actually read and interpret data? Or, is it more likely that you have indulged in taking the STUPID pills that the so-called Tea Party take?

Since becoming the Speaker of the House, your party has continuously ignored the voice of the people. We don’t need to go back very far for evidence of that either. One glaring example is 90 percent of the American People favor Universal Background Checks when purchasing a gun. Yet, you killed the legislation that would have made that a reality! Another was the Jobs for Veterans Act which was favored by over 60% of the American People.  You successfully killed that bill too.  Were you listening to the American People then, too?

You have ruled over the worst House of Representatives in the history of this country. You double-talked your way through your tenure. For example, 11 months ago you said in a publicized interview that the Affordable Care Act was the “law of the land” and that the recent election proved that the American People wanted it. Now you are still trying to kill the law of the land.

You have allowed the Republican Party to become the defacto American Anarchy Party. The American People have twice voted to go in the direction of the Democratic vision. Yet, you still cling to the fact that gerrymandered districts allowed you to keep control of the House as proof of your delusional  vision of the American People.

It is my opinion that you do not deserve the position of Speaker of the House. Especially since you refuse to BE the Speaker of the House. Rather, you prefer to be the Speaker of Stupidity!

How about this for a change. Instead of throwing a tantrum because the American People rejected your party’s vision of America, why not try to be an actual LEADER. Of course leadership requires that you take control of the situation and NOT be afraid of losing your job. It requires common sense approaches to issues that really matter to the American People not the stupid Pee Party members of your caucus! Yes I deliberately said Pee Party. Their real vision for America is “I got mine, piss on the rest of you.”

So what is it going to be Mr. Speaker? Are you going to continue your role as lemming of the Anarchy Party, or are you finally going to grow a backbone and become a real leader of the House of Representatives? If I was a betting man, I would take odds that you will continue to be a party lemming. Please prove me wrong.

It is time to let the Republican Party know that we are sick and tired of their stupid games. As you know, the House passed a continuing resolution to keep the government running only if the Affordable Care Act is delayed for one year! Why one year? Because if it works, as we all believe it will, they will have a hard time keeping their jobs in the mid-term elections next year.

Since they are bound and determined to make the average Americans pay for their inhuman behavior, I thought we should all write a letter to the Chairman of the Republican National Committee. This letter should be sent by anyone who receives Social Security, Military Pensions, Federal Government Checks, etc. So, if you know anyone who fits this category, please pass it along and ask them to either mail it or email it to the RNC.

The only way we can stop the madness is to fight back. The Republicans and their allies are bound and determined to implement a state of anarchy in this country!! We cannot let that happen!

Here is my suggested letter:

Reince Priebus
Chairman
Republican National Committee

Dear Sir,

I want to inform you that since the Republican Party is determined to shut down the government, it has become necessary for me to take some protective actions.

My income is based on “earned” benefits from the Federal Government. You plan to refuse to pay me those “earned” benefits beginning on October 1, 2013. As a result, I must assume that the Republican National Committee is prepared to meet those obligations on my behalf. In order to keep your burden to a minimum, I have only notified my mortgage company, my car loan institute, and my life insurance company to send you the bill.

Please do not attempt to tell me that the President or Senate are the guilty ones since it is your party that put the obstacle of continuing to run the government in place. It is unbelievable to me that you would jeopardize the lives of average Americans in order to defund the “law of the land”. I noticed that the House bill did NOT include defunding their own health care which is paid for by the American People.

Additionally, do not tell me that you are only following the wishes of the American People since only 18% of the American People favor shutting down the government over this issue according to the latest poll.

The benefits that we receive such as military pensions, social security, government paychecks, etc. are NOT entitlements as your party likes to call them. They were earned with our service and our paying taxes. Your party has totally become out-of-touch with the American People.

Please accept my advanced thank you for paying my bills while you continue to keep our country in state of anarchy.

Sincerely,

The Republicans and their mouthpiece the Foreign Owned Xenophobic news network keep saying they are doing what the American People want. But, they fail to say that 59% of the American People, according to the latest poll, does not want a government shutdown or a failure to raise the debt ceiling over the Affordable Care Act. So, the real question is which people are they talking about? I’m sure isn’t the real American People!!!

Introduction

I have been given the opportunity to contribute to Lean Left. This isn’t my first time posting here. I was a guest publisher in the past. However, since the other guys have been very busy, and I have some extra time, it is a good time to try to light up Lean Left again.

My name is Mark. Some people I know consider me very left of center politically. Others think I am more centered. No one considers me as right of center. I am retired Coast Guard. I am a bit older than Tom, Kevin and Keith. So, I may remind people how some things in politics have changed or not changed from the past. Remember, if we fail to remember the past, we are doomed to relive it.

I plan to post here at least once or twice per day. Not sure how much I will post on the weekends yet, but I will be active during the week. If you have any questions in your comments, I will try to answer them as soon as possible, but even though I am retired now, I still do have a life and will not be looking at the site 24/7.

I am sure there will be times when you agree with me, and other times when you want to reach through the screen and strangle me. I will make a few promises concerning my posts.

First, I will try to be informative. I do not plan to simply rant and rave, but rather put things so the reader can either accept or reject my premises.

Second, keeping with the first, my posts may occasionally come across as educational. I can’t help that. I have too many years in training and teaching to avoid it.

Third, I realize that there are some people commonly referred to as “trolls” who like to post negative ranting comments about everything we may write here. I simply wish to ask them to keep their usual comments about us being un-American out of the equation. I have 20 years served in the military. So, I have as much right to my opinions as anybody else.

So, that is a little introduction about me. I look forward to this opportunity, and I am sure that we will generate some lively discussions as we move along.

The cynical take on Justin Tapp’s blog post here: Employers are assholes who will do anything and everything to avoid providing decent pay and benefits; further, anything you do to attempt to force them to improve pay and benefits will ultimately backfire; so STFU, take your sub-poverty pay and crummy benefits — if you’re lucky enough to get them at all — and be happy you get even that much!

Now obviously, that’s over-the-top with the cynicism, but let’s face it: while economic conservatives are quick to tell us all why our “nanny-state” interventions on behalf of the working poor are doomed to failure, they never seem to offer viable, productive solutions to their plight. Just a long laundry list of excuses as to why we can’t and shouldn’t do anything about it (often coupled with an argument that we should do even less).

Cross-posted from G+.

I’d add that liberals and conservatives seem to agree on the stuff that comes before the first semicolon. The stuff after that is conservative thought.

Is This Thing On?

And if so, does anyone still bother to look?
