Europa Universalis IV's Million Tiny Steps Forward

By Rob Zacny | PC Previews | Feb 7, 2013 4:37 PM | 0 Comments

Even as a fan of the series, I was skeptical the first time I heard about Europa Universalis IV. Europa Universalis III was still going strong on my hard drive, and I didn't exactly see why I needed another just yet. Whatever improvements Paradox might make with EU4, they'd likely be marginal, a bit of extra polish and the odd tweaking, but not something worth getting excited about, right?

Then they let me play it. And everything I thought about EU4 went straight out the window. Read More »

La Dee Da: Skyrim HD Textures Fancy Up Dragonborn

By Taylor Cocke | PC News | Feb 7, 2013 1:51 PM | 0 Comments

Up until today, Skyrim felt a little uneven. The Dragonborn, Hearthfire, and Dawnguard content packs were noticeably low resolution, while the rest of the world could take advantage of the official High Resolution Texture Pack that Bethesda had already put out. What's a guy with a high-end PC to do? Well, they've gone ahead and fixed that by updating the whole thing. Time to look at some pretty stuff. Read More »

A Trip to Proteus: A Non-Review

By Taylor Cocke | PC Articles | Feb 7, 2013 1:50 PM | 0 Comments

I've seen the cycle of the world in less than an hour. I've seen the joyous bloom of spring, the sunny afternoon of summer, the crisp evening of fall, and the slow descent into the darkness of winter. I've listened to an entire year's worth of animals coming and going in the time that it takes to watch an episode of Breaking Bad. Proteus is a place where all of that's possible. Read More »

CS:GO Maps Workshop Launches

By Taylor Cocke | PC News | Feb 7, 2013 12:28 PM | 0 Comments

One of the reasons I became so obsessed with the original Counter-Strike was the absolutely ridiculous number of player-made, unofficial maps. The problem was, the good ones were few and far between, and there was no real way of weeding them out. Now, with the launch of Maps Workshop in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, that little problem will be solved. Ah, there you are fy_iceworld, my old friend. Read More »

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct Trailer Slaughters the Undead, Has Rednecks

By Taylor Cocke | PC News | Feb 7, 2013 11:01 AM | 0 Comments

Look, I know the slow walking, shambling zombies are the traditional horror trope. But man, I can't help but feel like they're pretty easy to get away from. Sure, they travel in packs, but even someone as out of shape as me could probably outrun them. Then again, this trailer for The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct implies that it may be slightly more difficult than I think. I better pack some weaponry. Read More »

Where To? New Assassin's Creed Announced

By Taylor Cocke | PC News | Feb 7, 2013 10:20 AM | 0 Comments

Well, that didn't last too long. Whereas we spent three (!) Assassin's Creed games with Ezio, apparently Connor isn't worthy of his own full-blown trilogy. That is, according to Ubisoft, who announced today that there would be a brand new Assassin's Creed game coming in their fiscal 2014 (April 9, 2013 through March 31, 2014) that would feature a brand new protagonist in a different time period, as Polygon reports. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to be an upset American about all of this. Read More »

Die Hardest: The Showdown Effect Q&A with Game Director Johan Pilestedt

By Mike Sharkey | PC Previews | Feb 7, 2013 9:01 AM | 0 Comments

It's tough to succinctly define or pin a genre label on Paradox's 80s action movie homage, The Showdown Effect. Sure, it wears its console platform-fighting influences on its sleeve, but it's also a hardcore, PC, mouse and keyboard twitch shooter. So just what the hell is The Showdown Effect? I sat down with Arrowhead Studios CEO and Game Director Johan Pilestedt to find out. Read More »

Valve Boss Gabe Newell Pans Steam Greenlight, Future of Feature Unknown

By Mike Sharkey | PC News | Feb 7, 2013 7:57 AM | 0 Comments

According to the latest tally from Valve, Steam users have Greenlit 42 games since the community driven system launched in September. Based on recent comments from the big boss himself, Gabe Newell, there might not be many more. In a talk at the University of Texas, Newell said Greenlight is a "bad example of an election process" and admitted Valve might axe it completely. Read More »

Obscure: Survival Horror Becomes Arcade Shooter

By Mike Sharkey | PC News | Feb 7, 2013 7:13 AM | 0 Comments

I didn't see this one coming. Obscure, the forgettable 2005 survival horror game that put players in the shoes of a group of teenagers trapped in a high school, is rising from the grave. Only this time, the survival horror has been replaced with arcade shooting, and if I'm being honest, the arcade shooting looks a helluva lot more fun. Read More »

Dutch studio Triumph (Overlord) is resurrecting the franchise that got it started, and for turn-based strategy fans, that's welcome news. Age of Wonders 3 is now in development, and Triumph says the modern reimagining of the long dormant fantasy series will be ready for launch this fall. Read More »

Questions & Concerns About Aliens: Colonial Marines

By GameSpy Staff | PC Articles | Feb 6, 2013 2:50 PM | 0 Comments

Next week, Gearbox's long-awaited Aliens: Colonial Marines arrives at last, and it's a challenge to not get swept up in the excitement around a game based in the legendary Aliens universe by a developer that's still hot off the release of a great game. That's why, in our Questions & Concerns feature, we're taking a deliberately skeptical look at what we know about Aliens: Colonial Marines -- and what we don't -- to make sure you can see past the hype. We hope none of this stuff ends up being a problem, and it's still way too early to declare it a good game or a bad game, but you'll definitely want to read this before you preorder! Read More »

Lone Survivor Creator's New Game+ Un-Cancelled

By Taylor Cocke | PC News | Feb 6, 2013 12:32 PM | 0 Comments

I was really bummed out when Lone Survivor creator Jasper Byrne announced that he had cancelled development on his dungeon crawler, New Game+, last November. It seemed really neat, and I loved the last game he had put out. Fortunately, he's officially announced that he's working on it again. What a twist! Oh, and here's some gameplay footage to check out. Get an Assassin's Creed 3 Refresher Before Checking Out The Tyranny of King Washington

By Taylor Cocke | PC News | Feb 6, 2013 11:24 AM | 0 Comments

So, IGN tells us that the first episode of The Tyranny of King Washington will be coming out on Feburary 19th. But Assassin's Creed 3 came out last October, so protagonist Connor is perhaps not the most fresh in all of our minds. That's what this trailer is for, to give us a quick reminder of what the assassin is all about. Oh, and introduce some of the new powers he'll be getting. Read More »

Pretty Baby Set to Wreck Stuff in MechWarrior Online

By Taylor Cocke | PC News | Feb 6, 2013 10:26 AM | 0 Comments

You know, I'm starting to think that this Pretty Baby Hero Mech is ironically named. The newest addition to the MechWarrior Online arsenal is quite the monstrosity, sporting an 80 ton frame and a big ole 340 XL engine to drag it around. Of course, it also has a bunch of lasers to tear into opponents. But hey, you expected that, didn't you? Read More »

Gabe Newell & JJ Abrams: We Want To Talk About Portal, Half-Life Movies

By Dan Stapleton | PC News | Feb 6, 2013 9:55 AM | 0 Comments

Speaking at DICE and appearing next to Star Trek/Star Wars director JJ Abrams, Valve founder Gabe Newell just blew a bunch of minds by stating that Valve is interested in talking about doing a Portal or Half-Life movie -- and that he's in talks with Abrams to do some kind of collaborative project.
