So after a few weeks wait, the new music video for The Script’s “Millionaires” song is finally out…

Millionaires Video — The Script

Millionaires Video — The Script

The old Warhol saying “In the future, everyone will be famous for 15 minutes” had to be edited slightly to fit in this particular instance – blink and you will miss me!

Watch it on thier official site here >>, or on YouTube Here >>

(check around the  1.15 and 2.41 marks)

The funniest comment I saw on the YouTube about the clip was:

“2:42: The old version of The Script? hahaha! old but still rockin’!”

That about sums it up… hey ho!

The Culture Show this week had a special programme on artists applying to take part in the 2013 Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition. One of that artists was my friend the printmaker Suman Gujral (see a previous post about her here >>).

Concentrating on the ups and downs of the application process it was a thought-provoking and, at times, rather sad programme. Suman came over very well on camera however, and it was great to see some of her work. Check it out (for a week or so) on the excellent BBC iPlayer here >>

Last week I got booked to play (well, mime!) guitar in The Script’s new music video for their song ‘Millionaires’ off their latest album…

I don’t think I’m meant to talk about it until it’s out however, so stay tuned! (I have a feeling it may be a ‘blink and you miss it moment’ for yours truly, but there you go…)

( a whole two months since a single post – shame on me…!!)

However, things have been far from quiet at this end…. no excuse, but sometimes life goes like that?

One thing that has been taking a lot of hours away from blogging time is my recent involvement in the re-launch of Unicorn Magazine.

Unicorn Magazine is a quarterly folk magazine, representing the views and interests of the folk arts community in the three neighbouring counties of Herts, Beds and Cambs. Started 31 years ago, the dedicated team who have kept it going ever since have decided to retire – myself and two others have (rather rashly!) taken on the baton!

We are hoping to take the magazine forward in months to come, whilst remaining true to the spirit of the original – ‘evolution rather than revolution’ as the saying goes.

Paid for by advertising alone, needless to say we have had a lot to take on board. The next issue (Issue 123!) should be out by mid June and will showcase a new design (by your truly), some new features and lots of new editorial from the others on the team. We have also had to hastily create a new website, which like the magazine will hopefully evolve and grow over time.

Do check it out, join the mailing list to receive a free PDF copy of the next issue, do all that social media stuff, and place an advert if you think it relevant.

Here’s to the next 31 years!?

A very inactive time post-wise lately, I am afraid – rather too many things  going on!! Of those, here are a couple of folk-related things…

Folk21 Regional Day
Last weekend however I spent a fascinating day attending the Folk21 organisation’s latest Regional day. Held in the fantastic Cecil Sharp House, it proved to be a packed day of workshops, networking, showcases from various new acts and an evening concert from some well-known performers.

One of the best acts I saw was the Cardiff-based duo BarlowCree - I highly recommend checking them out if they are playing near you!

My Guitar Workshop
I was just about to start properly publicising my new acoustic guitar workshop at Halsway Manor, when unfortunately, through no fault of our own, we have had to postpone it. . .(not cancel, it’s just been moved to a date tbc in July). Apologies to those who have enquired or booked places (you will be officially informed by the venue of what will happen next etc)

However, I’m pleased to say that instead I’m running a slightly shorter, non-residential version of the course on the weekend of 23rd and 24th March, as part of the St Albans Music City event. More details and a full PDF programme for that umbrella event can be found on their website.

The description from the leaflet of my course goes like this:

Acoustic Guitar Techniques with Clive Batkin
Saturday 23 March – Sunday 24 March
Weekend Guitar Workshop run by Clive Batkin in the Old School Room, behind the Hollybush, Church End, Redbourn, AL3 7DU
Day 1: 10.30am – 5pm
Day 2: 11am – 4.30pm
(Coffee and lunch available in the bar)

A weekend course for beginners and intermediate guitarists to explore a wide range of acoustic guitar techniques. The course, over two days will focus on an overview of different techniques that can be applied to modern acoustic guitar playing.

The course is suitable for beginners/intermediate level players; ideally, everyone should have a basic grasp of the instrument. It is open to
both plectrum and fingerstyle players and does not require one to read music. The course can be applied to other stringed/fretted instruments such as the mandolin and mandola.

Clive Batkin is an experienced player, performer and teacher, specializing in acoustic folk/roots music. As well as acoustic guitar, he also
plays mandolin and electric and bass guitar, plus home-made instruments such as the balalaika and his unique ‘harp guitar’. Spaces will be limited, and early booking is advised.
Tickets £20 (£15 concessions)

Pretty colours!!

I was recently given the following. . .

Absolutely perfect for the tea-drinking / note-making designer in me!!

Roll on the Horror vacui!!!!

(I’m not sure the term has ever been applied to the fear of staining a pristine mug with cheap Morrison’s tea bags, but hey!)

Shed reading

It’s been just too damn cold to get out into the shed lately as the UK has been plunged into freezing ice and snow for what seems like weeks…

Luckily, a friend gave me the following as a bit of light reading and to raise my spirits!

Fifty Sheds of Grey

I’ve never read the original 50 Shades of Grey that the book is a spoof of, but I am sure it’s not a patch on the shed-based version!?
