DIY Glass Bong, Part 4: How To Smoke With Your New Bong

How To Smoke Weed From A Pipe

  1. First, exhale before putting your mouth on the pipe. This makes room in your lungs, and insures you won’t blow out through the pipe by accident, which has been a source of embarrassment for new smokers for many decades.
  2. Put the flame over the weed in the bowl, and inhale. This sucks the flame down towards the weed, lighting it. Keep inhaling until you feel like your lungs are starting to fill up (not until they’re totally full)
  3. If you’re using a bong, keep inhaling while you lift the bowl out of the downstem. This lets air in and smoke out, and is called clearing the bong. If you’re smoking a different kind of pipe that’s made for weed, there’s probably a hole or “carb” on the side that you’ve been covering up all this time; just lifting your finger off will clear this kind of pipe.
  4. Now here’s a real Old Hippie trick: take the pipe out of your mouth, and make a sudden “gasp” intake of fresh air, deliberately expanding your chest (preferably while sitting or standing up straight). This forces the smoke deep into your lungs, and insures that you won’t swallow the smoke by mistake. This trick will get you much higher (and works with any style of smoking or vaping).
  5. Hold your smoke in for five…full…seconds. Count them. (Vapor can be held for 10 seconds).
  6. Now exhale. And probably cough.

Make Your Own Glass Bong, Part 3: How To Do It

In the previous installment of How To Make Your Own Glass Bong, you picked out your liquor bottle and ordered the special diamond bit to cut the hole in it. Somewhere between then and now, you’ll have to empty that bottle, but I’ll leave that up to you :-) Right now, you have just a few things left to get, and luckily, they shouldn’t take long.

The Glass

As much as I like to say “Support Your Local Head Shop”, I tried. They didn’t have anything I needed in stock, and if they did it would have cost $50 minimum just for the parts. So I dug around on the web, and found something even better: Free Glass!!!

Make Your Own Glass Bong, Part 2: Pick Your Bottle

The first part of this article gave a bit of history of bongs and talked about how many people end up with cheap glass but still pay the expensive price. We’re going to make our own bong using good quality materials, and save money too!

Bowl

The way “real” bongs work is that they have a ground glass joint in the body section which accepts a separate piece called a downstem. The downstem guides the smoke to the bottom of the bong, so it will bubble and flow through as much water as possible for filtration. Better ones are diffused, which means they have extra holes or slits cut in them for more bubble action. The bowl is yet another separate piece that fits into the top of the downstem.

We have no way of constructing a ground glass joint, but by drilling exactly the right size hole and doing a bit of magic, we will end up with almost the same end result.

There are two standard sizes for glass pieces, measured as the diameter of the widest part of the joint: 14mm (actually 14.5) and 18mm (actually 18.8). We will use the 14mm size, so everything else you choose to use with this setup must also be 14mm.

The Bottle

First thing, you need a bottle. You can technically use almost any bottle for a bong, but the best ones have a flattish spot at a more-or-less reasonable angle (a horizontal bowl will spill) and height, as well as a longish neck to keep your hair out of the flame area.

Make Your Own High Class, All Glass Bong For Only $37

(Part One of a four-part article)

Regular readers of this site know that I never actually smoke my medical marijuana. Instead, I prefer vaporizers, like my ever-present little MFLB (Magic-Flight Launch Box), because smoke tends to have extra chemicals you don’t want, and if you need your medicine daily like most patients, all that smoke adds up to health problems in the long run.

Bottaro Wine Bottle from Sam’s Club

All that changed when I walked into Sam’s Club a week or two ago and spotted a large display stacked with these wine bottles for something like $8.47 each. There was only one thing it made me think of, and I realized that I’ve never even owned a bong, despite smoking my first joint in 1967.

I really like making things myself, and the sheer beauty and practicality of this bottle design made me decide it was time for a new project. And then I suddenly remembered the wise words of the late philosopher Rodney King:

Why Can’t We All Just Get A Bong?

And now we can, and for just about the price of an ordinary glass pipe! And that’s using high quality, glass-on-glass components. Best of all, as long as you know exactly what to buy (and where), you can put this all together yourself in less than half an hour!

Bong Basics

Bottaro Bong

Bongs are essentially water pipes intended specifically for smoking cannabis (that’s why you should only talk about “water pipes” in smoke shops or head shops, because otherwise in many backwards places that’s considered “drug paraphernalia”). The basic purpose of a water pipe is to filter and cool the smoke through water, which makes it easier on your throat and lungs. Bongs can be as simple as a bowl poked through the side of a Gatorade bottle or as complex and expensive as you like.

The basic parts of a bong are the body and the bowl; everything else is optional. Back in the 60s, nobody really even had bongs, but every head shop around sold Indian brass water pipes for $5. In the 70s, I think, someone came up with acrylic bongs with aluminum bowls, and then someone invented the “carburetor” (a little hole in the back so you could get all the smoke out).

At some point, one of the chemists making LSD probably took a good look at some of their own laboratory glassware and invented the glass bong. Along with that came the now-popular glass-on-glass joint that lets people not only “clear” the bong just by pulling the bowl out, but also mix and match components like ash catchers, percolators, and even hash oil and joint smoking accessories!

Today, most people buy glass bongs, and the cheaper ones (up to $75 or so) come with cheap, thin glass downstems and little bowls that look like perfume funnels and will fall on the floor and break if you so much as look at them crosseyed. The bong you’ll build with these instructions uses standard 14mm glass-on-glass fittings, so you can add parts to it later, and reuse everything in the future if you like!

Great Balls of Ganja Goo!

Dear friends, I am very happy to be able to bring you this adventure, which has been lost in my archives for well over a decade. It happened exactly 15 years ago today, to the minute (I’ve timed this to publish exactly at 12:15…you will soon see why). I was excited to be at the 30th anniversary of the fabled 1967 Summer Of Love, right in San Francisco where it all happened, but I had no idea what I was in for. It turned out to be my first experience with edibles and my first glimpse at the elusive level [11]. Bear in mind that I had thought at that point that all my drug use was way in the past, and I certainly had no inkling of my future self as Old Hippie.

I wrote most of this up the same night it happened (except the last paragraph), and posted it on my blog/website (yes, some of us really had them even back in those days), but it was password-protected to keep it out of the prying eyes of search engines (they had those too!). So only my closest friends — less than a dozen people — have ever read this before today.

After I started writing as Old Hippie, I remembered this story as one of the best things I had ever written, and a classic example of someone writing under the influence of cannabis. But I couldn’t find it anywhere, although I knew I had saved it. Finally, I discovered it in a ZIPped archive that I had made last century, and knew I had to share it with you. Today.

Notes:

  • My sons were 3 and 8 at the time.
  • I’ve left everything exactly as it was in the 1997 original, other than fixing broken links and removing/changing names and such, except the original psychedelic background, which made it very hard to read. However, I have preserved that background here for posterity.
  • I know you’ll want the recipe. I haven’t tried it yet, but this is the closest I can find to what I remember from the ingredients used.
  • My biggest surprise was that the Summer Of Love website is still up and running and looking great!

Nugs and hugs forever,
Old Hippie

P.S. Dedicated to D.T. and all good daddies everywhere.

Larry King: Marijuana Legalization is ‘Logical’

Larry King: Marijuana Legalization is ‘Logical’
Larry King: Marijuana legalization is ‘logical’ (via Raw Story )

Appearing Wednesday with Huffington Post hosts Alyona Minkovski and Jacob Soboroff, longtime television interviewer Larry King confessed that he thinks marijuana should be made legal, saying prohibition’s end is actually quite “logical.” “I’ve always felt marijuana– Marijuana used to be…

Happy 75th Birthday, Marijuana Prohibition! Now Crawl Off and Die.

October 1, 1937 was the sad day that the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 took effect, turning the harmless cannabis plant overnight from being a useful source of fiber and medicine to the evil devil weed and assassin of youth. Well, not really, but that was the effect.

And the Federal government lumbered on for the last 75 years, spouting its lying propaganda like a gigantic ocean liner ejecting dirty bilge water into the harbors of our minds. This poisoned the very thoughts of Americans, many of whom still believe that cannabis is a dangerous drug — simply because the government (who they basically distrust the rest of the time) says so — even though it’s been used safely by humans for at least 5,000 years.

But now that some of us American humans have been using it safely, medically, and (mostly) legally for the last 16 years, things are starting to change. People have woken up to the fact that their kids, their cousins, their parents, and even their grandparents are using it every day to support their health and well-being. And nothing bad is happening to them.

And that’s why a huge percentage of Americans — over 70% by most estimates — now support medical marijuana, and why a clear majority support legalized marijuana for adult recreational use. There are three states with legalization on the ballot this November, and at least two of them have a good chance at passing. It’s time we turned around this sick War On Drugs (which is really a war on our own people) and started doing something about it.

And now we can. Just Say Now and Yes On 64 are working together to help get the word out about Amendment 64 in Colorado. You can sign up to make phone calls (they will help you with everything) to voters in Colorado to help give them facts about marijuana legalization, or simply donate money if you prefer. All it takes is one state to break the logjam…we proved that in 1996 in California with medical marijuana!
