Why did it take so long?
For a few brief moments, I peeked into the future of gaming the other day. While I wore id Software Co-founder John Carmack's homemade prototype virtual-reality headset, there was no monitor -- my entire world was replaced by a blocky version of Doom 3 BFG Edition that reacted to my every head movement. It was an incredibly convincing experience, a very "Holy crap, I'm in the game" kind of feeling, and was much more immersive than, say, when I reviewed the Vuzix Wrap 1200VR. The headset is a mix of small LCDs and motion control parts held together by duct tape and glue, with a ski-goggle strap keeping the device firmly in place on my head. As slap-dash as it might look right now, Carmack believes this is the starting point for new gaming experiences. And he wants to help takes us there. Read More »

Well, that's awfully generous of you, Overkill Software. If just one player buys the new Wolfpack DLC for Payday: The Heist, all their buddies don't have to pick it up to play with them. They can check out the two new heists, the Technician class, and the shiny grenade launcher for free. The co-op shooter gets its new content for $10 today, so find a buddy who's willing to float it for you. Or, you know, just buy the thing yourself. That would be nice too. Karma and all that. Those of us in the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive beta know that it's a really solid interpretation of the classic multiplayer shooter. We also like to brag about being in the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive beta. It's pretty cool in here. But soon, everyone will be able to join the party. As of today, CS:GO is available for pre-order on Steam for 10% off the $15 asking price, and apparently, it'll make its targeted August 21st release date. Valve time? What's that? Read More »
The phrase "nothing is sacred" comes to mind when viewing the announcement trailer for Sacred: Citadel. This colorful, illustrative-style co-op action-RPG sidescrolling platformer bears little resemblance to its gritty, top-down Diablo-style ARPG predecessor, Sacred 2: Fallen Angel. Before you flip the hell out and start composing a "how could they do this to my beloved franchise" rant, bear in mind that Sacred: Citadel is not the full-fledged Sacred 3 we've been promised in 2013, but rather a prelude to it. The Sacred 3 logo remains grayed out at Sacred-World.com with a "coming soon" attached. (A GamesCom announcement, perhaps?) And once you get past the "why did they call this Sacred?" outrage moment, you can appreciate what appear to be some well-animated and potentially entertaining combat. Watch the trailer and let us know what you think. Read More »
Oh man, the more I see about Sir, You are Being Hunted, the more excited I get for it. It's got it all: procedurally generated worlds, cool robot hunter dudes, and now a trailer drawing influence from 1960s horror flicks. It's got the long pans over eerily empty landscapes, the weird stuttering zooms, and even the bad fonts poorly floated over background imagery. If this is the direction Sir, You are Being Hunted is going, I couldn't be more stoked for it. Read More »
The best part about a near-future multiplayer shooter like Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is all the gadgets you get to play with. In the multiplayer reveal trailer within, we see AR drones, a tiny mech thing, and something that looks like it shoots heat waves at oncoming opponents. They're all pretty neat. There's also an occasional weird floating screen with weapons on it. Not really sure what that's all about, but I'm sure we'll find out soon enough. Read More »
A couple months back, we saw some screenshots of the promising Half-Life Source engine mod/remake, Black Mesa. After nearly two years of radio silence from Carlos Montero and the team behind it, the screens served as affirmation that, yes, Black Mesa is still alive. And based on what appears to be a legitimate gameplay video, Black Mesa is alive and well. Interested in seeing the first footage of the Source-ified Half-Life in two years? Click on through. What didn't we see inside the steamy, intricate, black resin walls of the Xenomorph hive in James Cameron's Aliens? What other types of Xenomorphs are there and what do these different types do? More than just a sci-fi nerd discussion topic, it's something the devs at Gearbox are exploring deeply in Aliens: Colonial Marines. Learn how in the latest developer diary. Read More »
Calling it a "fairy tale outcome," DayZ creator Dean Hall announced this morning that his Arma 2 zombie survival mod will become a standalone game from Bohemia Interactive. But that doesn't spell the end of the mod that now has more than one million registered players. Hall said that development and updates of the mod will continue in parallel with the standalone game. It's not supposed to be like this. I've spent the better part of half of year exploring the best parts of innovative MMORPGs like The Secret World, TERA, and the Guild Wars 2 beta. I've long known that World of Warcraft's subscription numbers have dropped significantly. But here I am at 3am the morning before my column is due, forcing myself to quit leveling the Hunter I started a week ago ("Screenshots," I told myself -- "I just need screenshots") and even going to the extremes of shutting off my laptop's wifi. Despite formidable competition, it seems World of Warcraft still retains something of its fabled power to enthrall -- but it's hard to escape the impression that Cataclysm probably wasn't the most auspicious name for Blizzard's third expansion. I tried to play some Magicka co-op with my friends the other day, but we didn't get very far into the story. In fact, as soon as we figured out how uniquely awesome spells worked, we just sat there and killed each other. Over and over again. Like, for hours. It was awesome. But not very productive. Fortunately for us, Arrowhead Game Studios has seen fit to give us an Olympics-inspired set of PvP maps in the WOOT Tournament DLC. Read More »
Better get sharpening your sickle, Death old buddy. It's going to get some use in the newly announced survival mode in Darksiders 2. Arena Challenge works like a fairly basic horde-style game, but with a slight twist. Taking a cue from Regis Philbin's magnum opus, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Arena Challenge features 100 rounds, and every five rounds players will be asked to choose between taking a prize at that moment or continue playing (and surviving) for five more rounds in hopes of getting something even better. My final answer? Yes, please. Read More »
This Rise of the Triad reboot sure isn't afraid to show its roots. In a gaming landscape where most shooters have gone the modern or near-future route, Rise of the Triad looks to stick to the arcadey action that made us all fall in love with the early days of shooters. It's got all the important stuff: rocket jumps, absurd weapons, and Nazis. I mean, really, what else could you ask for? Read More »
This is the whistling sound of a bomb dropping on DRM. Sure, we may have been a bit excited about the PC re-release of Final Fantasy VII, but upon its release this weekend, hordes of unhappy users made their way to the Square Enix forums to voice their displeasure in how the SecuROM DRM hasn't been allowing them to play the game they so nicely paid for. As a result, Square Enix pulled the release from their site with no mention of any reason why. Great. Cool. Awesome. Read More »
