A small game with big ideas.
We want more of these missions.
Here's what you should know.
Following PlanetSide 2's air combat trailer, I've kind of been looking forward to just dropping missiles on all that prettiness from above. Now some new screenshots have been released to further whet our appetites... for mayhem. Read More »
Is anyone here still playing Age of Empires Online? And by "playing," I mean "hammering on the locked door that opens only for money." Well, the summer update's now out, and its fixes promise to make AOEO a far better free RTS. Read More »
One week ago the indie 7DFPS challenge kicked off, and you may be as shocked as I to hear this, but now, seven days later, it's ended. All sorts of crazy, self-punishing indie developers embarked on a mission to create a game in the genre of The General Antithesis of Indie, and some oddball results have leaked out of the whole thing. We've gone through and played a bunch of the games -- here's our pick of the funnest, the prettiest, and the most interesting. Read More »
Hats! You know, I didn't think they'd ever take off, even despite my rabid collection of them in a certain hypercute Korean MMO a decade ago. And these days, no one ever takes off their hat, so you might as well jump on board the trend-train. Steam's just launched the Dota Workshop, allowing cosmetic customization for your Dota 2 heroes. You don't need to feel awkward. I think we've all experienced that anxiety where we question whether an indie game slaved over for months by its developers is really worth the amount we'd ordinarily splash out on a soggy sandwich that we'd kind of reluctantly ingest on our lunch breaks. It's okay, though -- at least in the case of Botanicula, which now has a demo that's playable right in your browser. It probably has more nutritional value, too, if we're being honest. Read More »
Is anyone here in the MechWarrior Online beta? I'm kind of surprised I can't hear the stomping or the pew-pew from out here in the cold, where I look in sadly through your giant windows and wish I could play with the great robots too. For those of you in that happy place, the developers have released details regarding changes to the beta in the near future. The rest of us can make do with the newly revealed system specs required to eventually get stomp-happy. Read More »
The Jagged Alliance brand of turn-based tactical gameplay isn't a bad fit for the free-to-play model. Cranking out a continuous stream of new maps, mercenaries, and weapons offers plenty of free and premium fodder. But if you want to make good on that promise and see everything Jagged Alliance Online has to offer without spending a dime, be prepared for a serious grind. Read More »
We were first introduced to it last weekend, and now I'm chuffed to say that the nascent tongue's-eye-view genre appears to be really taking off. This new trailer for Natural Selection 2 showcases mayhem gnawing its way through a variety of delightfully mundane sci-fi settings, such an abandoned gym and a space cafeteria that probably serves like, rehydratable ice cream. Urgh. If I were more monstrous, I'd probably be expressing distaste with my gnashers in an uncouth, blundering Gorge-like fashion too. Read More »
Will SWTOR be allowing less restricted server transfers soon? Is it going free-to-play? Will it forever be relegated to a life of asking if I want fries with that? I haven't seen a future so uncertain since I graduated with my Arts degree. In any case, when I dropped by the SWTOR booth at E3, Executive Producer Rich Vogel told me of plans for "megaservers." The funniest thing happened to me last night while playing Diablo 3: I stopped having fun. No, it wasn't because I was moving through the same dungeon again, or that I suddenly grew tired of the level grind, or that the story bothered me (who really plays a Blizzard game for the story anyway?). No, it was the realization that I'd shifted my style of play from looking for loot to equip, to wholly being focused on finding goods to put on the Real-Money Auction House in the hopes of making a quick buck. Diablo 3 isn't a game anymore -- it's a part-time job, and I don't know if I can look at it the same way ever again. Read More »
Update: Video pulled. Bummer.
Valve's always left the origins of the zombie outbreak in Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 to our imaginations, but now it looks like a few blanks will be filled in by a DLC crossover from fellow co-op shooter Payday: The Heist. Read More »
Today, upstart indie developer Dark Vale Games announced Forge, described as its bid to unify the strategy of traditional MMO player-versus-player combat with the pacing of competitive shooters like Counter-Strike and Team Fortress 2 into one grind-free, $15 game. We grilled Dark Vale's Timothy Alvis -- not just about Forge, but also the benefits of free DLC and the problems with combat and grinding in online gaming. Read More »
If there's one thing that my guild members will remember of me once WoW is gone and buried under the great weight of Blizzard's next MMO, it'll probably be "all those stupid mount-farming parties she dragged us along to." I was that guildie who was always online, waiting for 2% drops to eventuate or mustard-colored proto-drakes to spawn. I've since rectified my Full-Time Nerd Ways, but this video showing off Mists of Pandaria's new mounts are pretty close to bringing on a relapse. Aren't they adorable? Well, okay, maybe not, but I want 'em anyway. Oh god. Send help. Send in the crew from Intervention. Read More »
