So the world is one day into this 7DFPS thing - it's essentially a week-long game jam, with the theme being that each participant must make an FPS within a week. I know, I know, them indies are flinging about their sweetened mashed fruit practically every weekend –- but I'm finding this jam particularly entertaining because we're watching them venture into a genre they wouldn't ordinarily consider. Let's take a look at what notable indie devs are cooking up for the competition so far. Read More »
Good grief, Black Mesa Source has been in development almost as long as an actual Valve project. You'd be forgiven for thinking it had been given up on, pretty much like all prospects for Half-Life 3. It seems the Black Mesa guys have noticed the slump, though, and they want everyone to know: we are still alive! They've come out of nowhere with an announcement that they'll be unveiling some "exciting new media" soon – but only if you can help them out with a little something first. Read More »
Hello there, lifeless world. You suggest it's been decades since anyone last treaded your surface, but that sure looks like a lot of conveniently placed jumping puzzles you've set up for us, huh? Following yesterday's Lifeless Planet teaser, a handful of screenshots have been made available to further open our window on this unique-looking space exploration game. Click through for our gallery. Read More »
It kind of kills me to be so excited about SimCity. On one hand, it is looking adorable. On the other, its always-online requirement is probably sentient and going to try and strangle us as we slumber. While I was at E3 this week, I dropped by EA's booth to check out SimCity and ask its devs just why they opted for the always-on thing, anyway. Are we going to have to learn to sleep with an eye open? Here's what they had to say. Read More »
I've been known to wake up at ridiculous hours of the morning to watch NASA launch livestreams. There's just something subtly, deliciously terrifying about the blackness of space, and especially the psychological implications of venturing out there. It stands to reason, then, that this trailer for a new in-development space game, Lifeless Planet, has launched it to the dense upper atmosphere of my hype-o-meter. Read More »
The Nostradamus of gaming goes by the unassuming nick of derptemp6698, apparently. A Reddit user with a history of credibility has leaked details on two new pieces of Mass Effect 3 DLC: it's going to contain new guns and maps and stuff! I know, I'd never have predicted that either. The other chunk is the long-awaited extended epilogue that might finally give some dissatisfied fans the closure they've been after. Click onwards to read up on the details. Read More »
Trion Worlds opened a fissure at E3 with a demo of Rift's first expansion, Storm Legion, and now a veritable flood of lightning-infused hype is pouring forth. Following the teaser from a couple of weeks back, we're now hit with a handful of screenshots. Read More »
No, that's not Kane from C&C.; It turns out the guy who wrote Snow Crash and Cryptonomicon is a gamer, and a picky one at that. Author Neal Stephenson has co-founded a company called the Subutai Corporation to create (among other things) CLANG, a PC arena dueling game that he says will finally do justice to the art of swordfighting. (I have a feeling he'd have a thing or two to say about melee combat in Skyrim.) Anyway, he's put together a hell of a Kickstarter video to sell us on the concept, and it includes an awesome cameo appearance (at the 3:00 mark) that's worth watching for by itself. Read More »
Fans of Codemasters' DiRT series (nee Colin McRae Rally) have come to expect a high standard of off-road racing goodness. Sumptuous visuals and grin-inducing driving physics have powered previous chapters to the front of the pack, but that ride comes to a crashing halt with DiRT Showdown. Those expecting DiRT 4 will have to lower their expectations, because DiRT Showdown exhibits all the characteristics of a slapped-together, keep-the-marketing-department-happy stopgap release. If you're in Europe and play League of Legends, now would be a really good time to change your password. Riot's co-founders announced that someone exploited a "specific security issue" (which they claim has since been fixed) to gain access to information including email addresses, encrypted passwords, summoner names, date of birth, and for "a small number of players," first and last name, plus encrypted security questions and answers. Read on for more on the breach. Read More »
Red Orchestra 2 sure is doing a lot of stuff. I mean, the recent Game of the Year edition -- a downloadable upgrade free to anyone who owns RO2 -- just came out a little over two weeks ago, adding a slew of new game modes and gameplay refinements. Now the price has been halved for good – and the devs promise more stuff is still on the way. Read More »
Now that Naval War: Arctic Circle's been out for a couple of months, it stands to reason you might have seen all it has to offer by now. But that ends soon: developer Turbo Tape released a mission editor yesterday via a patch, so as we speak hardcore naval commanders are at work craft their own missions that you can download through Steam Workshop. Additionally, they've released a new trailer that encourage us to craft missions that end in explosions every single time. Read More »
Hey, look, say what you will about SWTOR – but you can't say BioWare isn't delivering some fresh content. The things we can expect from patch 1.3 have been released, and among them is the long-overdue WoW-style Group Finder. What else does the package contain? Click through for more deets. Read More »
I'm here at MLG Spring Championship in Anaheim, where people downstairs are currently playing StarCraft 2's yet-to-be-released expansion pack, Heart of the Swarm, right now. Blizzard's opened it up to the public for the first time, and noobs and pros alike are giving the new units a whirl, including the show-stealing Protoss Tempest. For those of you not so lucky, you can check out a video after the jump. Read More »
You've seen that Skyrim: Dawnguard DLC trailer, right? Vampires are finally getting the attention they deserve, with a ton of new life-draining abilities and perks. Only problem is, Dawnguard isn't out, and won't be for another month or two. But you know what is out? Some great vampire mods that give vampires all sorts of new gameplay and spells to make them generally excellent to play with right now. Sink your teeth into into these! Read More »
