Think of MechWarrior Online's bipedal metal beasts not as an Iron Man suit that moves like a gigantic armored human, but as a walking tank that you drive. That's the mental adjustment I had to make before I could get the hang of the mechs I drove into 4v4 combat with IGN's Anthony Gallegos (read his MechWarrior Online preview here) and Piranha Games' team of developers. We were tantalized by the brief mention of "Crews" in the last Max Payne 3 multiplayer trailer, and it turns out to be an even bigger feature than we imagined. Rockstar is taking the wraps off of its rebooted Social Club today, and along with actually making the service, you know, social, it's allowing Max Payne 3 players to band together in their own clan-like groups. We've seen a number of videogame protagonists squeezed through the wringer over the years, but few have experienced such a horrifying, mind-shattering journey as Dead Space's Isaac. Hey, strategically dismembering countless humans turned grotesqueries will do that to a guy. Well, Visceral Games ain't done with old Isaac yet. EA has confirmed Dead Space 3 is in development and set for launch by March 2013. Read More »
"Design test chambers or you're fired." Those are the inspiring words of Aperture's Cave Johnson, and today, even the most hopeless of modders will be able to create Portal puzzles to make GLaDOS proud. It's the Portal 2 Perpetual Testing Initiative, and it brings a free map editor that makes test chamber design a snap. So hurry up and get building before Cave decides he's got another project for you to work on. You know, something like asbestos curtain tester. Read More »
StarCraft II players, say it with me: "We want LAN! We want LAN!" Well, we're not going to get it, but Blizzard is giving us something close to it. In Heart of the Swarm, players will be able to resume play of a disconnected match, allowing them to continue where they left off. Pretty slick solution, even if it's not exactly what fans have been asking for. Read More »
We're still a few months from finding out if 2012 will mark the end of the world, but five months in, I think it's safe to say that this year at least marks a new beginning for the MMORPG genre. For the first time in years, developers are producing games that seem like something other than World of Warcraft or EverQuest clones. TERA, Guild Wars 2, and The Secret World all have ideas within them that warrant some attention, and even Blizzard's mixing things up a little with Mists of Pandaria. All in all, it's a good year to be an MMO fan. But will these new games still be standing as tall this time next year? I'm no Mayan, but here are my predictions for how each of these games will perform in the coming months. Read More »
Edmund McMillen is really good at being creepy. The most recent trailer for the expansion to his already grotesque The Binding of Isaac certainly sets a tone of horrifying imagery. Fortunately, he's also really good at giving us tons of content for not a whole lot of money. On May 28, the Wrath of the Lamb expansion will be on sale for $3. Read More »
Many of you already like Assassin's Creed, so why not make it official? Click the blue thumbs up button on the Assassin's Creed 3 Facebook page and watch the little unlock meter go up and up until it, er, unlocks an extended gameplay trailer. Share on Twitter, post to your Facebook timeline, do what you gotta do. I just wanna see some suckers get stabbed in a forest. While you're waiting for everyone else to quit slacking, check the teaser trailer below. Read More »
There was a time when word of a new Star Wars game was reason for celebration. But after a string of disappointments, including the Force Unleashed series and most recently the absurd Han Solo dance-off known as Star Wars Kinect, I can only cross my fingers and hope that LucasArts won't further embarrass itself with a mysterious new project called Star Wars 1313. If you're just now jumping on board the Max Payne train in anticipation of Rockstar's take on the noir shooter, there are two things you need to know: 1) Max's favorite pastime is ventilating gangsters via slow motion dual-wielding dives, and 2) just about everyone Max ever loved received a violent, untimely death. See just how bad things got for Max, and begin to understand why he moves his life to Brazil, in the first issue of the Max Payne 3 digital comic. Read More »
Blizzard's Jay Wilson recently chatted with our friends at IGN about Diablo 3's new insane mode, describing it thusly: "Inferno difficulty is very, very, very hard." Now that that's been clarified, it's time to talk tips on surviving against a legion of demons who shake off your mightiest blows like rain drops. Gird your loins (gird them!) for Diablo 3 Inferno. This will take me awhile to type out as I'm wringing my hands in anticipation. Gimmie a sec... Okay, hands fully wrung. After last week's magazine cover story leak, THQ and Relic made it officially official-like this morning: Company of Heroes 2 is coming in 2013. The 2006 WWII RTS will finally get a full sequel early next year, putting players in command of Russia's Red Army and taking the war to the frosty Eastern Front. Come on inside and let your eyeballs enjoy the first screenshot. Read More »
There are moments where Sniper Elite V2 nails what (I assume) it feels like to be a badass sniper behind enemy lines in World War II. Like sitting in a church tower, picking off enemy soldiers one at a time, and masking rifle shots to coincide with bombs dropping in the distance, or landing a well-placed shot on an enemy tank's fuel tank, sending it up in flames. But all of these moments take place in a fairly confined and linear battlefield as Sniper shuffles you from one spot to another throughout its single-player campaign. Thankfully there are just enough worthwhile multiplayer features that help to break up this tedium. They help to put Sniper among the "popcorn flicks" of summertime games this year: it's mindless fun for a short time. Read More »
How are you? It's a fine day. I'm feelin' good. It's a fine day for feelin' good, and it's probably due in part to the fact that Amazon is now peddling a Double Fine bundle. For a cool ten bucks, you'll receive the excellent brainfaring adventure Psychonauts, with Stacking and Costume Quest as commendably quirky accompaniments. Read More »
A name has been confirmed for the next South Park game. "The Stick of Truth" is vaguely hilarious and slightly suggestive, as is the style of the television show's creators. It's been officially listed on the Xbox Live Marketplace, though the given release date of May 5th 2012 is probably wrong. Unless there's something I haven't been told about. Hey, you haven't already got your grubby hands on it, have you? Read More »
