Kodak No.1 Circular Snapshots

BERJAYA

The Kodak No.1 camera, invented by American George Eastman, was a simple, leather-covered wooden box - small and light enough to be held in the hands. Taking a photograph with the Kodak was very easy, requiring only three simple actions; turning the key, pulling the string, and pressing the button.

The Kodak No.1 produced circular snapshots, two and a half inches in diameter. The Kodak was sold already loaded with enough paper-based roll film to take one hundred photographs. After the film had been exposed, the entire camera was returned to the factory for the film to be developed and printed. The camera, reloaded with fresh film, was then returned to its owner, together with a set of prints.

The Day The Sea Turned To Gunk

BERJAYA

It was as if the ocean has been turned into a giant cup of cappuccino. This display of nature's occasional freakiness had people scratching their heads in Cape Town, South Africa. Sea Point Beach on the outskirts of the city was transformed into a foamy mess when the sea suddenly frothed itself into a frenzy.

It seems that a variety of impurities in the seawater combined at just the right amounts and, shaken and stirred up by the powerful motion of the waves, formed bubbles. The bubbles bonded together and before long it was as if some sort of chain reaction had taken place.

The Pitch Drop Experiment

BERJAYA

The pitch drop experiment is a long-term experiment which measures the flow of a piece of pitch over many years. The experiment was started in 1927 by Professor Thomas Parnell of the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, to demonstrate to students that some substances that appear to be solid are in fact very-high-viscosity fluids.

Parnell poured a heated sample of pitch into a sealed funnel and allowed it to settle for three years. In 1930, the seal at the neck of the funnel was cut, allowing the pitch to start flowing. Large droplets form and fall over the period of about a decade. The eighth drop fell on 28 November 2000, and now, 85 years later, the ninth drop is only just forming, as you can see in the picture above which was taken from a live webcam.

Francesco Schettino, The Costa Concordia's Daredevil Captain

BERJAYA

As the Costa Concordia sinks deeper into the Mediterranean, the controversy swirling around Captain Francesco Schettino is heating up. It wasn't Schettino's navigational skills that got him into the trouble he's in today but his deplorable actions after the Concordia hit an outcropping of rocks.

Infrared video of the evacuation captured by the Italian Coast Guard shows hundreds of people trying to get off the ship as it was completely on its side, helped by the heroic rescue workers who had little more than moonlight to guide them. By then Schettino was already on dry land, having a heated argument with coastguard chief Gregorio De Falco, who was ordering him to return to his ship. Schettino can be heard explaining that he could not get back on the ship because it had capsized. De Falco then screamed, 'Get back on board, prick!' The term in Italian, 'Vada a bordo, cazzo!' has gone viral, with T-shirts an instant hit.

Be Wonderful And Wise

Danish butter brand Lurpak rolled out a very creative ad. It shows that healthy food can be tasty too by showing close up, colorful, creatively filmed shots of 'chop-chop-chopping' and 'dice-dice-dicing' vegetables. The weird part is the voice of Dutch actor Rutger Hauer singing along and sounding very creepy - although the creepy voice gives the commercial a certain charm.

Are There Fundamental Laws of Cooking?

BERJAYA

Cooking is a field that has in recent years seen a shift from the artistic to the scientific. While there are certainly still subjective and somewhat impenetrable qualities to one's cuisine, there is an increasing rigor in the kitchen. From molecular gastronomy to Modernist Cuisine, there is a rapid growth in the science of cooking.

And mathematics is also becoming part of this. For example, certain ingredient ratios can allow one to be more creative while cooking. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that we can go further, and even use a bit of network science, when it comes to thinking about food.

Real Life Flintstones House In Portugal

BERJAYA

Located in the Fafe mountains of northern Portugal, the Casa do Penedo, or 'House of Stone,' was built between four large boulders found on the site. Although the house may seem rustic, it is not lacking in amenities, which include a fireplace and a swimming pool - carved out of one of the large rocks. But, as word has spread, the sleepy little house has had visitors venturing to see it in droves.
