The Stop Online Piracy Act aims to do a good thing – combat copyright infringement. Unfortunately, the bill is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of how the Domain Name System and DNS filtering technology work. This proposed law would dramatically weaken Internet security, making Americans more vulnerable to crime, fraud, viruses, and malicious hacking. Importantly, the government's own Internet security experts share this view: in the letter below, Sandia National Labs reports that SOPA would (a) be ineffective and (b) harm U.S. cybersecurity.
