Axis Book of the Week: Dismantling the Empire

To honor the contributions of the late Chalmers Johnson, I recommend reading his latest book Dismantling the Empire: America’s Last Best Hope.  Johnson often wrote about the ways in which the United States had become an informal empire, with military bases in dozens of countries, circling the globe.  That, our gargantuan military budget, and our frequent invasions of other nations were threatening to destroy democracy here at home.  This book lays out an ambitious and difficult plan for the US to give up empire for the sake of our own liberty, and survival.

Johnson definately assesses the current situation well with the use of higher global forms of governance and percieved image as the police of the world to position itself at the top. Leading with new forms of liberal internationalism structuring the world economy after World War II despite increasing wealth gaps felt around the world. I like his suggestions of dropping the idea of empire, he could have mentioned more about the political influence of the US within the supposedly “objective” IMF and World Bank, the less restrictions allowing administrations like Bush, Reagon, Nixon etc etc to act without regulation or accountancy or transparency. But in general a useful book to explore a good argument opening your eyes and broadening your mind to read between the lines. Love this site and recommend the book
