Before reading my response to Cusmar350's blog, first read his own blog.
I always find the debate odd between the need for single player modes in multiplayer games. They are both singular experiences that can be separately enjoyed, provided that they are quality products. Defenders of the issue that great multiplayer games with bad single player modes are usually wrong to me on several issues. One being that great multiplayer games don't need single player modes. This is usually said to defend games that have great multiplayer modes, but lack a good singe player experience. This is seen as a lazy attempt at defending an issue that can be resolved. This issue is reflective of what Battlefield 3 is. I gave it a 7.5 in a review that I wrote on here. My main issues were that the single player was absymal at best. It didn't use Battlefield's strengths and ultimatley relied on trying to be Call of Duty. The environments were small and mostly a long corridor. The story was generic ass hell and a bore to keep on playing in all honesty. Several parts were taken from Black Ops, a better single player experience in my opinion. The first issue is that Battlefield is not Call of Duty, its a more tatical shooter that emphasies team work. The bad company games understood this more than Battlefield 3 did. While some may say that its a worse game than BF3 since it is intended for consoles, all I can say is that you clearly skipped over a solid single player game. It took what made Battlefield so unique and applied it a single player mode.
The story while lacking in character development strived in comedy and a unique campaign that makes it different from its other modern warfare competitors. It was a story of searching for gold with a fun gang of misfits. Who could forget Haggard's quest for Truckzilla? I don't blame you for discounting its own merits, but as a fan of Battlefield I honestly really liked this campaign. This doesn't mean that Battlefield 3 should follow on Bad Company's foot steps, but it should have been a more open ended single player mode that captured the sense of fighting in a large Battlefield. My main point with this is to say that multiplayer focused games should be held up to some accountablility. If you are going to showcase your single player than gamers should expect a level of quality that doesn't disappoint. You can't give a free pass to Battlefield 3 or any multiplayer focused game. If they desire to make an adequite single player, than people have the right to be mad about it. This isn't about how great multiplayer truly is. The game is disappointing because of the single player's faults. Reviewers and fans of games have a right to complain about an underwhelming single player mode. Even if you never intended to play the single player mode, there will still be someone out there that'll play it and voice their opinions on it. No matter how much you love a multiplayer focused game, the single player must still be held accountable.
Before you call me a single player lover, just know that I have no allegiance to either mode. I'm a fan of good video games so that isn't why I'm defending single player mode in multiplayer games. Whatever ill will you have for CoD, you have to admit that the single player mode is done well and some may enjoy it for what its worth. That doesn't mean that you have to like it, just let bygones be bygones. I'm tired of people defending multiplayer exclusive games and their need to have good single player games. This doesn't mean that I want every multiplayer game to have some form of single player mode. That is probably the opposite for me as I would rather have a game that focuses on what makes it great, rather than appeal to everyone. I love Quake, even if it doesn't have a good single player mode, I came for the multiplayer mode. That's fine with me, but I have no reason to defend it if some people hated the single player. That is a bad judgement on people that expect a great single player mode for Quake. That's a problem that the developer will have to improve if they add a single player mode. This doesn't mean that Quake gets a free pass to be great even if the single player lacks quality.
You can complain about it and call it disappointing in that regard. This doesn't mean that the game is bad, it just means that it has problems that can be improved. I'll end it off with me saying that every mode that is added in any game should be evaluated and reviewed on their level of quality. No matter your personal bias you have to be the bigger man and ultimately accept some peoples disappointment with a game. I liked Battlefield 3, but the single player did not live up to my expectations. It wasn't that good and didn't show what Battlefield is good at. Even if I loved the multiplayer, I have to admit that. I'm just tired of games like this being given less criticism for a underwhelming single player mode. Remember Cusmar that Dice showed of the single player mode. That says to me that they showed the single player mode as something that would be a focus of BF3. It doesn't matter what the original games did. They're old compared to the industry today, and standards have been elevated to an extent. Either except it or don't. I just want to make sure that most people understand my side of the issue and that I expect more from single player modes in multiplayer games. I pay 60 bucks for these games, they should at least try to impress me.
