Last Saturday was my 2nd Marvel vs. Capcom 3 tournament. Well, technically, my first ULTIMATE Marvel vs. Capcom 3 tournament. but whatever. Anyway, I just wanted to recap the events of the tournament. I wont do this after every one I do in the future. It's just htat I have very little tournament experience and I did pretty decently this time. The tournament was held by a few of my friends in the King of Prussia Mall. It's called "Brawl in the Mall." This was the 2nd one held there. Some notable names who showed up were Damian, Josh Wong, Dieminion, and Noel Brown. These are some top players in the coast, country and world in their respective games.
The previous tournament was back in September. I only competed in Vanilla MvC3. It went as bad as it possible could have. My first match was against RougueYoshi. He's known for ridiculous fancy combos. I played him a bunch at PAX and again in Casuals before the tournament. My record against him is about 3 win 50+ losses. He beat me 2-1 and sent me to loosers. My 2nd match was against some Zero/Spencer/Something team. I lost 2-1. The guy sucked. I got unlucky a few times. I was just completely out of it. I went 2 and out and was extremely pissed off.
I'm gonna skip all the stuff I did in between then and the tournament now, because I didn't change my gameplan much.
My first match was against some guy who didn't really know how to play. I beat him 2-0. He said mid match that he saw me practicing (I was showing off some fancy combos before the tourney started) and he didn't want to play me. I didn't really show much against him because I didn't need to.
My second match was against a guy I played against in casuals. I bet him over and over with some half-joke teams. I beat him 2-0 in the tournament with ease. He played Viper/Dante/Vergil but not nearly as well as I can.
My third match was against SlobMurph (who won the Street Fighter tournament that day). He played Nemesis/Wolverine/Sentinel. I jokingly play those characters as well so I knew what he was going to do. I could tell he had poor execution for choosing those characters so I wasn't too worried about getting hit. Those characters can do damage, but I knew he as a player didn't have the damage output that I have. I heard he was supposed to be really good and that he recently beat Josh Wong, but I beat him with ease 2-0.
My third match was against Dieminion. He is probably the player I want to play against most. Like out of every player in the world. He's been tearing it up lately and he plays a zoning game, which I suck at fighting against. I wanted to loose to him for experience in the type of matchup I hate most. He slowly destroyed me 2-0 with his odd Viewtiful Joe/Dr. Strange/Morrigan team. I spent most of the match trying to download how exactly he was playing out his strategy and I couldn't find a weakness. Almost no openings anywhere. It went exactly as I expected it would go from watching his match vids online. It was one of the best losses I've ever had. he's also a very nice and humble guy. I hope I get to meet/play him again some day.
My fifth match was against Josh Wong. He's another top east coast player. He played Taskmaster/Wesker/something? I forget. He beat me 2-0. I was pretty salty after that one. I dropped easy combos. Almost had a full comeback. I actually never touched X-factor. I played a little sloppy. Not saying I should have won, but I didn't get the chance to show that I had a chance of winning because I really think I did. That would have been pretty big for me if I had beaten him. I think I could next time. But...whatever. my day will come soon enough. Oh I almost forgot, Wesker's super lost me one of the games. There's about a 1/4 chance of characters bouncing out of his super in a weird way that prevents me from completing my touch of death combo and it happened in that game. Can't do anything about bad luck.
Overall, I placed 5th out of 24. Dieminion won. Then Noel Brown, Damian then Josh Wong. My friend Andy and I tied for 5th using the same team but in different order.
I kept saying that would be the last time I used Wesker. The way he lost me one of my games was a big reason why. Consistency is very important to me. I work hard on strategy in Marvel and strategy requires consistent results. I can't have his super ruin my strategy and loose me a game. I'm working hard on C.Viper right now, but she's REALLY hard. That's why I wanted to use her, but I haven't hit that breakthrough moment where things start clicking for me. I think the second I figure out how to comfortably do rapid Seismos, things will start flowing for me. I can combo with her pretty effectively, but I want to get rapid Seismos down first. Still not sure if she's the right character for me or not, but I'm gonna stick with her for a while. Wesker will still be the place holder for a little while, but I want to use Viper instead. She's more fun and rewarding. I also don't like characters that are too popular and Wesker is gaining a lot of popularity. So is Doom, but I love him too much and was using him back in March while everyone was winning with lvl3 X-Factor Sentinel.
So yeah. That's it. That was the first of hopefully many tournaments for me this year.
