    Tone Deaf

Evan McMorris-Santoro reports that Rick Santorum has a well-regarded ground game in South Carolina, and yet he's still not surging in the polls. Why? Well, it could be because of tone deaf moments like this.

    Hearting Huckabee

Starting at 8pm Eastern, Fox News will be showing the pre-recorded "Candidates' Forum" that Mike Huckabee hosted in South Carolina today. TPM will be chronicling it live in the livewire.

    Not Over Yet in SC

I suspect that the GOP nomination battle is pretty close to done. But don't be so sure about South Carolina itself. I heard the pundits talking this morning on MSNBC about how Rick Santorum, rather than Newt Gingrich, was the one who could give Mitt Romney a run for his money in the state. But that sounded really off to me. The latest polls suggest that Santorum is losing support, as is Romney and Gingrich is either holding his own or gaining.

    Shut Your Wallet, Warren!

Turns out the government doesn't need Warren Buffett's help to make up most of the budget deficit. It would be in pretty good shape if it could only collect all of the money legally owed to it anyway. But guess who's standing in the way of that?

    Newt Gingrich: Communist

At least, that's what you'd think if all you had to go on was cable news today. Michael Lester wraps up the GOP establishment freakout into a stunning 100 seconds. Meanwhile, Benjy Sarlin teases out its implications here.

    Death Spiral Alert

Newt defends his attacks on the very foundation of rapacious capitalism, to the good folks at Fox and Friends. Watch.

Singin' From The Same Song Sheet

A year ago, heck even six months ago, progressives would have been stunned to find populist themes at the core of the Obama re-election campaign. But the evidence that they will use income inequality as a rallying cry to define this election and paint Mitt Romney into a corner is abundant, from the man himself to his advisers to his surrogates. Today's example: White House Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Alan Krueger went down the street to the friendly confines of the Center for American Progress to give a speech on ... income inequality and declining income mobility.

    To The Ramparts!

With the GOP establishment moving to defend Mitt Romney and capitalism itself from Newt Gingrich and the Democrats, Rudy Giuliani rushes in to save the day: "What the hell are you doing, Newt?" Watch.

    More on Pardons

More on the question of pardons from long-time TPM Reader DS ...

Just wanted to follow up with you on the issue of pardons. While I cannot speak to the specific pardons Haley Barbour allowed, I agree that there should be more pardons, not less, and that pardons are very difficult to come by.

When I was 17 years old I got into some very serious trouble. I was charged with two non-violent felonies which I plead down to misdemeanors. I served my probation, completed my community service, and paid all fines and restitution, all before I was 19 years old.

Gingrich Suggests Illegally Firing Federal Employees Over Liberal Views

Republican Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich suggested at a Fox News forum hosted by Mike Huckabee in South Carolina on Saturday that it would be a good idea to fire federal employees for being too liberal. Federal law, on the other hand, says Gingrich's plan would be illegal. "I think an intelligent conservative wants the right federal employees delivering the right services in a highly efficient way and then wants to get rid of those folks who are in fact wasteful, or those folks who are, or those...

'Dead' Voter Talking: O'Keefe Voter Fraud Stunt Confused 23-Year-Old For Dead 84-Year-Old

Robert William Beaulieu is 23-years-old, lives in Nashua, New Hampshire, and is a registered Democrat. He's also very much not dead. But you wouldn't have known that if you watched the lastest undercover sting video from James O'Keefe's Project Veritas, which featured a man with an Irish accent attempting to obtain a ballot on behalf of a Robert Beaulieu who lives on Cassandra Lane.

Obama Administration Comes Out Against SOPA, PIPA

The Obama Administration on Saturday took a stance on two pieces of anti-online piracy legislation moving through Congress -- the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate --- saying it would not support the bills as currently written, handing the biggest victory yet to a growing chorus of critics of the bills. Fittingly enough, the Administration's response came by way of a blog post published in response to two online petitions. As the post states: "While...

South Carolina: A Battle Between Old And New?

COLUMBIA, SC -- When you watch the homestretch to the South Carolina primary, you're really watching the latest round of a fight between old campaigning and new. Mitt Romney and his allies are spending a fortune to win here, and the current polls show he's pulling it off. But ask around among the political professionals here in the state's capital and you'll hear the same thing over and over: Romney's headed to victory without the robust, retail-style campaigning past winners have relied on. And that...

Today On The Trail: January 14, 2012

The campaigning in South Carolina continues through the holiday weekend. Here are the 10 things you need to know. New CNN poll confirms national Romney momentum A new national poll from CNN shows former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney up big, taking 34 percent of the vote and building an 18 percent lead. There's two trends in polling the GOP at the moment -- South Carolina is a real race, but nationally it looks like Republicans are finally accepting Romney as the nominee. Huckabee hosts SC forum Former...

SOPA And PIPA Sponsors Caving In To Opposition

As more and more actions are planned in protest of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA), the dual pieces of anti-online piracy legislation moving through Congress, the architects and supporters of these bills have finally begun tiptoeing back. PIPA co-sponsor Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) on late Friday released a statement saying: "I would not vote for final passage of PIPA, as currently written, on the Senate floor." However, Cardin said he would remain a co-sponsor because it...

The Day In 100 Seconds: Freaky Friday

In an eventful Friday, Mitt Romney was slammed by Newt Gingrich with an attack out of left field that he may struggle to recover from. John Edwards meanwhile has developed his own problems, just in time for his trial. Not to be outdone, President Obama took to the stage to announce what many of us have expected, he's..... shrinking the size of government?? (Incidentally, Fox referring to this: "The power-grabber in chief took this day to ask for more executive power." Fair and balanced.)

NY Tech Meetup Will Physically Protest Senators Over SOPA/PIPA

Looks like Reddit's hopes of getting other tech heavyweights to participate in its protest against the House's proposed Stop Online Piracy Act and its sister in the Senate, PROTECT IP, are coming to fruition in a big way, offline in the Big Apple. NY Tech Meetup, an 8-year-old trade organization made up of 19,000 plus members of New York's thriving technology industry (aka Silicon Alley), took the unprecedented step on Friday of emailing every member in its contacts list calling for them to all show up...

South Carolina Was Always Going To Be A Fight, And Now It Is

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney accomplished something big in the first two primary states -- he was the first GOP candidate to win both Iowa and New Hampshire. That set the narrative totally toward a Romney roll: He moved up in the polls at the next stop in the process, South Carolina, and with a huge fundraising quarter it very much looked like Mr. Inevitable was, well, inevitable. And then the campaigning down south started. The TPM Poll Average of the race shows that Romney had a ten point...

Three Years Later, ICE Still Probing Who Leaked Immigration Status Of President Obama's Aunt

Three years, two months and a week -- more than 1100 days -- after the 2008 presidential election, internal investigators at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement are still probing who leaked the immigration status of then-Sen. Barack Obama's aunt Zeituni Onyango just three days before voters went to the polls. Relevant files from ICE's Office of Professional Responsibility are "part of an ongoing investigation" and will not be disclosed, an ICE official wrote in a Jan. 11 response to TPM's Freedom...

No Signs Doug Hampton Working With Feds On John Ensign Case

Former John Ensign aide Doug Hampton is now one step closer to going on trial on charges he broke an anti-revolving door lobbying law. Hampton appeared at a pre-trial hearing in Washington, D.C. on Friday, his trip provided by the U.S. Marshals Service because he was financially unable to pay his own way, according to court records. He's due back in court on Sept. 5, with a trial likely in the fall. Hampton's role in the Ensign debacle is at this point well know. He left Ensign's office in 2008...

'Behind The Eight Ball': Terrible Times For The Minnesota Republican Party

The Minnesota Republican Party is having a hard time. This week, the liberal watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed a complaint with the FEC that alleges the party and its now-former chairman, Tony Sutton, violated the Federal Election Campaign Act. "The Republican Party of Minnesota's FEC reports haven't reflected the party's actual financial condition for nearly a decade and make a mockery of the public's right to know," CREW Executive Director Melanie Sloan...

Newt: Super PAC's Bain Ads Cross The Line

Newt Gingrich said last month that he would repudiate any ads by independent Super PACs that he felt were out of bounds. On Friday, his campaign said he was honoring that pledge by calling on a pro-Newt Super PAC, Winning Our Future, to take down ads attacking Mitt Romney's Bain Capital years. "This week, fact check organizations like The Washington Post and Politifact have ranked advertisements produced by Super-PACs supporting Governor Romney and myself as containing enormous inaccuracies," Gingrich...

GOP Candidate Passed Off 'Home Economics' Degree As 'Economics' Degree

Missouri gubernatorial candidate Dave Spence liked to tout his "economics" degree on his website and at campaign events -- but in reality his degree was less about bookkeeping and more about housekeeping. Until Thursday, Spence (R) had claimed on his campaign website that he "earned a degree in Economics" from the University of Missouri (screenshot here). But on Tuesday, Jake Wagman of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch pointed out that this was a bit of a stretch -- Spence's degree was in home economics. : AP...

Romney's Conservative Businessman Pitch Runs Into Fire

Mitt Romney is looking to steady his ship in South Carolina after overcoming a week of tough attacks on his Bain Capital days in New Hampshire. But while Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry, and assorted Democrats have all gone after him from his left flank on the issue, there are signs that he may have weaknesses on the right as well. In Romney's first ad following the Bain debacle, the campaign turns the focus towards the firm's success stories -- a handful of companies, including Staples, Sports Authority...

Colbert Announces Possible Presidential Bid: 'I'm Doing It!'

Stephen Colbert's faux news show actually made some real news on Thursday, when the late-night comedian announced he is handing over control of his super PAC and forming an "exploratory committee to lay the groundwork for my possible candidacy for the president of the United States of South Carolina." "I'm doing it!" Colbert exclaimed. But Colbert had to tie up a few loose ends before making his "major announcement." Jon Stewart Traces Newt Gingrich's Decline

What happened to Newt Gingrich? Back in early December -- with Gingrich surging in the polls -- he made a bold statement: "It's very hard not to look at the recent polls and think that the odds are very high I'm going to be the nominee." "It's getting easier," Jon Stewart said Thursday. And then Gingrich came in fourth in both Iowa and New Hampshire. "Say hello to the president of "Fourthlandia!" Stewart said.

Google Search Is Dead (As We Know It)

Someone had to say it. There's been a torrent of criticism from tech writers, and even one major company, over the past week following Google's introduction on Tuesday of "Search Plus Your World," a radical new attempt by the search giant to promote Google Plus, its nascent social network, by displaying Google Plus content at the top of the every search results page for Google Plus account holders, among other stark changes. Problematically for Google Plus users who don't want to see the new results...

'Osama bin Laden' Was An American Idol Fan

"Osama bin Laden" was a fan of American Idol. At least that's what was suggested by copies of a typed, two-page letter -- purportedly from the al-Qaeda leader -- which started showing up at schools, law enforcement agencies, a medical facility, municipal agencies and private and religious entities in the spring of last year. The letters demanded that America "neutralize" all its nuclear weapons and arrest unnamed individuals "responsible for unnecessary crimes of War, poverty, and suffering of families ...
