Andy Gavin's The Darkening Dream
Jan 12, 2012 - 11:25 PM - by Evil Avatar
BERJAYA

Available right now on the Amazon.com Kindle (and nook and soon on iTunes) is Andy Gavin's novel, The Darkening Dream. Andy is better known as Co-Founder of video game developer Naughty Dog and co-creator of Crash Bandicoot and Jak & Daxter.

Quote:
Even as the modern world pushes the supernatural aside in favor of science and steel, the old ways remain. God, demon, monster, and sorcerer alike plot to regain what was theirs.

1913, Salem, Massachusetts Sarah Engelmanns life is full of friends, books, and avoiding the pressure to choose a husband, until an ominous vision and the haunting call of an otherworldly trumpet shake her. When she stumbles across a gruesome corpse, she fears that her vision was more of a premonition. And when she sees the murdered boy moving through the crowd at an amusement park, Sarah is thrust into a dark battle she does not understand.

With the help of Alex, an attractive Greek immigrant who knows a startling amount about the undead, Sarah sets out to uncover the truth. Their quest takes them to the factory mills of Salem, on a midnight boat ride to spy on an eerie coastal lair, and back, unexpectedly, to their own homes. What can Alexs elderly, vampire-hunting grandfather and Sarahs own rabbi father tell them? And what do Sarahs continuing visions reveal?

No less than Gabriels Trumpet, the tool that will announce the End of Days, is at stake, and the forces that have banded to recover it include a 900 year-old vampire, a trio of disgruntled Egyptian gods, and a demon-loving Puritan minister. At the center of this swirling cast is Sarah, who must fight a millennia-old battle against unspeakable forces, knowing the ultimate prize might be herself.

Rumor: MS or Sony Leaving Next-Gen Console Race
Jan 12, 2012 - 3:19 PM - by Cygnus
source: tomshardware
Quote:
The PlayStation 3 may be the last dedicated gaming console from Sony.

Now the next-gen rumor mill is really starting to get a little juicy, as cloud platform provider Gaikai reports that one of the current console manufacturers does not have plans to partake in the next-generation console race. Who that will be should be relatively obvious given that Nintendo already has the Wii U exposed and flashing its goods to the general public, and Microsoft's leaked roadmap clearly shows another Windows 8-related Xbox in the works.

So who's left? Why that would be Sony, the very company who earlier today admitted that it will not show the PlayStation 4 console this year at E3. Reports last week suggested that both Microsoft and Sony would offer a brief glimpse at their next-generation hardware, but Sony consumer products head Kaz Hirai stated during a CES 2012 roundtable that no console will make an appearance at the June convention. Consider the PS4/E3 2012 rumor officially nuked.

But Sony pulling out of the console race altogether? That's seems a little far-fetched given that the company just churned out the touchy feely PlayStation Vita handheld console. Yet Nintendo and Microsoft clearly don't seem to have any kind of departure in the works, so that leaves Sony as the #1 quitter.

"Not all of the current console makers will have one more generation," Nanea Reeves, chief product officer for Gaikai, said during CES. "That will be the big news at E3."

Jagged Alliance: Back in Action Release Date, Trailer
Jan 12, 2012 - 1:33 PM - by Emabulator

Kalypso Media sends along a press release announcing that Jagged Alliance: Back in Action is scheduled for release in North American retail outlets on February 14, 2012.

Quote:
Kalypso Media is pleased to announce that Jagged Alliance: Back in Action, the next installment in the much loved Jagged Alliance series of tactical role-playing games, will arrive in North American retail outlets on February 14, 2012. Jagged Alliance: Back in Action puts players in control of a private military corporation that has been hired to depose an evil dictator, who has taken over the tropical island of Arulco. Sector-by-sector, inch-by-inch, the players squads of mercenaries will recapture the island using their wits, willpower, tactical skills, and of course plenty of guns.

Back in Action takes players to the fictitious country of Arulco, where a ruthless dictator has seized power and only a small group of rebels stand to resist her. Tasked with freeing the island from the dictators iron grip, players will command rebel and mercenary forces while using tactical, diplomatic and economic tools to keep troops supplied and ready for the next flight, all while commanding them directly in nail-biting tactical battles.

Back in Actions innovative plan & go combat system combines real-time strategy (RTS) with turn-based elements to guarantee that the intricacies of tactical warfare are rendered in dynamic, exciting gameplay. This challenges would-be commanders to master not only strategy and tactical combat, but also to maximize their teams capabilities through RPG-like character advancement.

GSC Seeks Funding to Finish S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2

BERJAYA

GSC has announced that they're continuing to develop S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, but are seeking funding to finish the project.

Quote:
GSC Game World, developer of PC shooter STALKER: Shadow Of Chernobyl, has told us that it is seeking funding to help it finish work on the game's sequel.

Yesterday the Kiev-based developer revealed on Facebook that it was still working on the game, despite reports before Christmas claiming the studio was facing closure. That threat appears to have been temporarily staved off, though the developer requires financial backing to ensure the project is completed.

"We are still in the process of seeking funding to back up the project," GSC spokesperson Oleg Yavorsky told us. "We are hopeful things turn out well eventually. The team really wants to see STALKER continue."

CD Projekt Stops Threatening to Sue Pirates
Jan 12, 2012 - 11:53 AM - by randir14
BERJAYA

Following outrage by the Witcher 2 community, CD Projekt has decided to stop threatening to sue people who pirated the game.

Quote:
Absolutely fantastic news. In December, the usually admired CD Projekt RED came under considerable fire for employing a law firm to pursue alleged pirates and demand large sums of money. The practice, which is designed to scare people into paying a considerable sum (around €750) to avoid having to go to court and potentially pay tens of thousands plus, has been viewed extremely dimly by many. Compared to blackmail, seemingly avoiding a legal process requiring proof of guilt, and with obvious huge potential for targeting the wrong individuals, it’s a practice RPS is strongly against, as we pleaded to CDP last month. We’re absolutely delighted to report that the company is to cease all such actions.

CDP have issued a statement in which they make it absolutely clear that this does not endorse or support piracy in any form, and they stress that they believe piracy is still causing them harm. They also insist that no one has been incorrectly contacted. But they also recognise that it has caused a great deal of consternation amongst their customers, and has damaged trust. It’s something they’re addressing by listening to the response, and immediately ceasing the practice.

DC Comics Announces The New 52 Second Wave
Jan 12, 2012 - 8:46 AM - by Evil Avatar
BERJAYA

DC Comics Sends along a Press Release announcing the cancellation of several "New 52" titles, including Rob Liefeld's horrific Hawk & Dove, and the launch of several new replacement titles.

Quote:
In May of 2012, DC Comics will release a "Second Wave" of titles as part of its historic DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 initiative. Six new, ongoing series will build on the shared universe and bold concepts introduced in September 2011 with the renumbering of DC Comics' entire line of comic books.

Featuring a variety of different genres and storytelling sensibilities, the titles in the "Second Wave" will be helmed by some of the most legendary writers and artists in the comic book industry, and will also feature the first ongoing comic book series written by acclaimed novelist China Miville.

"The excitement of the initial launch of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 was in seeing the re-imagining of these classic characters and concepts," said Bob Harras, DC Entertainment Editor-in-Chief. "The 'Second Wave' is all about world-building."

DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 "Second Wave" includes:
  • BATMAN INCORPORATED - Writer: Grant Morrison. Artist: Chris Burnham. The acclaimed ongoing writer of ACTION COMICS, Grant Morrison, presents a fresh take on BATMAN INCORPORATED, in which the Batman brand is franchised globally in preparation for a major international threat.
  • EARTH 2 - Writer: James Robinson. Artist: Nicola Scott. The greatest heroes on a parallel Earth, the Justice Society combats threats that will set them on a collision course with other worlds.
  • WORLDS' FINEST - Writer: Paul Levitz. Artists: George Perez and Kevin Maguire. Stranded on our world from a parallel reality, Huntress and Power Girl struggle to find their way back to Earth 2. Perez and Maguire will be the artists on alternating story arcs.
  • DIAL H - Writer: China Miville. Artist: Mateus Santoluoco. The first ongoing series from acclaimed novelist China Miville, this is a bold new take on a cult classic concept about the psychological effects on an everyman who accidentally gains powers to become a hero.
  • G.I. COMBAT - Writer: J.T. Krul. Artist: Ariel Olivetti. Featuring the return of a classic DC Comics series, THE WAR THAT TIME FORGOT, along with rotating back-up stories and creative teams - including THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER, with writers Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti and artist Dan Panosian; and THE HAUNTED TANK, with writer John Arcudi and artist Scott Kolins.
  • THE RAVAGERS - Writer: Howard Mackie. Artist: Ian Churchill. Spinning off from TEEN TITANS and SUPERBOY, this series finds four superpowered teens on the run and fighting against the organization that wants to turn them into supervillains.
The six new series will replace BLACKHAWKS, HAWK AND DOVE, MEN OF WAR, MISTER TERRIFIC, O.M.A.C. and STATIC SHOCK, all of which will conclude with their eighth issues in April.

"Many of the characters from our canceled books will appear in DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 titles, and in some very surprising ways," said Harras. "We're developing stories that reach from cultures around the globe to parallel worlds. We're just getting started."

I really liked OMAC.

Razer Project Fiona - Another Thing to Lug Around
Jan 12, 2012 - 12:44 AM - by Rommel
BERJAYA

In the "My man-purse is already too damn full" category comes Razer's Project Fiona, debuting at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show. Unfortunately, or fortunately from your wallet's perspective, Ubergizmo reports the machine may not see the light of day.

Quote:
RAZER is unapologetic about its pure-gaming approach, and this concept is solely focused on PC gaming experience. Before you get too excited, Project Fiona is not a product, or scheduled to be a product at this point, but RAZER intends to build enough of them so that key developers can take a look at it. The gaming community feedback will be critical to the future of RAZER’s Project Fiona.
If those controllers were mounted on sliding gears or telescopic handles for easy stow away, this would be a great replacement for a laptop for gaming on the go. Sadly, it is probably as likely to see the light of day as last year's Switchblade concept model.

Microsoft Issues Comment on China Laborers Suicide Threat
Jan 11, 2012 - 9:54 PM - by Rommel
BERJAYA

I am following this story for obvious reasons. Today, Kotaku released an update from Microsoft to the alleged incident that took place in Foxconn's XBox manufacturing factory.

Quote:
Microsoft is one of many companies that contracts with Foxconn to manufacture hardware. Upon learning of the labor protest in Wuhan, we immediately conducted an independent investigation of this issue.

After talking with workers and management, it is our understanding that the worker protest was related to staffing assignments and transfer policies, not working conditions. Due to regular production adjustments, Foxconn offered the workers the option of being transferred to alternative production lines or resigning and receiving all salary and bonuses due, according to length of service. After the protest, the majority of workers chose to return to work. A smaller portion of those employees elected to resign.

Microsoft takes working conditions in the factories that manufacture its products very seriously. We have a stringent Vendor Code of Conduct that spells out our expectations, and we monitor working conditions closely on an ongoing basis and address issues as they emerge. Microsoft is committed to the fair treatment and safety of workers employed by our vendors and to ensuring conformance with Microsoft policy.
Kotaku is crying foul, however, as Microsoft's statement "skips entirely over the original allegations, that the staff had asked for a raise and were instead told they could simply keep their jobs with no raise or resign and be compensated."

I am uncertain why Kotaku takes umbrage with the idea that a request for a raise be rejected. Still, what is most telling about Microsoft's statement is that it confirms that some incident, whatever the scope, did take place at the XBox facility.

Mass Suicide Threats at XBox Factory

Quote:
Three hundred Chinese factory workers who manufacture Microsoft Xbox 360s threatened mass suicide last week, according to unconfirmed reports.

The Foxconn employees threatened to throw themselves off of a factory roof due to a payment dispute, according to Record China and Want China Times. According to these reports, the incident began when employees asked for raises on Jan. 2 and were asked to either quit with compensation or keep their jobs without a raise.

The full tale at:http://www.telegraph.co.uk
The situation at Foxconn's factories is baffling. Chinese laborers have learned they can easily walk out and find a new job at the facility down the block. Yet this company has amassed a string of labor abuse accusations. After some digging, I was unable to find any third party social compliance audit reports on their webpage, though they do boast of membership in the EICC

Kuma War Designer Sentenced to Death in Iran

PC Gamer is reporting that a Kuma War designer has been sentenced to death in Iran for "creating U.S. propaganda under instruction from the CIA"

Quote:
A game designer has been sentenced to death in Iran after being charged with creating US propaganda under instruction from the CIA, according to a report on Gamasutra.

Ex-US Marine soldier Amir Mizra Hekmati was detained by Iranian authorities during a family visit to Iran in August. Hekmati is a designer on the free to play Kuma\War series, which is regularly updated with new missions based on recent military actions.

The ruling was dealt by the Islamic Revolutionary Court, who claim that Hekmati has confessed to receiving money from the CIA to (produce) and design and distribute for free special movies and games with the aim of manipulating public opinion in the Middle East. The Tehran Times describes an Iranian television appearance in which Hekmati says he is part of a US spy network, and suggests that the CIA funded Kumas games.

Next Gen Engines Supporting Next Gen Games
Jan 10, 2012 - 1:42 PM - by Justincredible
BERJAYA

The full feature includes a look at such game engines as Unreal 3 & 4, CryEngine 3, Luminous Engine, Creation Engine, and others.

Quote:
Let's face it, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are beginning to look outdated and discussion of next-generation platforms is at hand. Nintendo revealed the Wii U at E3 2011 and expects to ship sometime later this year with the promise to support the "core" gamer. Rumors of the Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 have been reported on the web with speculation and interest beginning to reach fandom. While details about the technical aspects of the consoles have yet to be confirmed, gamers can get a taste of what is to come by viewing the tools designers use in next-generation game engines.

Many of the game engines that are used today are already built for next-generation platform development. Game developers are just waiting for current console platforms to catch up in technology. The latest PC titles (Battlefield 3, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim) are prime examples of where visuals are headed, with the GPU and processing power to push higher resolution textures, vaster draw distances, more fluid animation systems, and better physics.

With a dawn of new consoles approaching, gamers can expect that Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo have equipped the new platforms with plans for competing against current and future technology. The PS3 was released just over five years ago and now enters the phase of post slim model, relying on accessories and exclusive titles to continue its sales till the PlayStation 4. Sure, the PS3 may live up to Sony's "ten year plan" but it will be hitting the bargain bins before the end of its lifespan. The next-generation consoles will need to be suited to amaze gamers from launch to years to come.

ZeniMax Media has announced that its subsidiary, Bethesda Softworks, has settled its legal battle with Interplay over the Fallout MMO game license.

Quote:
Under the terms of the settlement, the license granted to Interplay to develop the Fallout MMO is null and void, and all rights granted to Interplay to develop a Fallout MMO revert back to Bethesda, effective immediately. Scarygirl - Announcement Trailer
Jan 09, 2012 - 12:37 PM - by Emabulator

Square Enix has announced that Scarygirl from TikGames will be coming to Xbox Live on January 18 and PSN January 24. A PC version is planned for release early in 2012.

Quote:
Based on Nathan Jurevicius' Scarygirl graphic novel -- winner of the 2009 Aurealis Award for Best Illustrated Book/Graphic novel -- Scarygirl presents a wondrous adventure into a distinctive and beautifully bizarre world. The titular character Scarygirl is an abandoned child with a tentacle arm who dresses like a pirate, and is haunted by a strange man in her dreams. She sets out into the world to discover the meaning behind her bad dreams, but Scarygirl is hardly helpless, as she has a tentacle-powered arsenal up her sleeve.

During her adventure, Scarygirl will be aided by her friends and guardians from the graphic novel, Blister the giant octopus and Bunniguru the mystical, kung-fu rabbit. Her friends and an ever-improving arsenal of combat moves will help her face down enemies like the adorably deadly hedgehogs of the Owl Woods, the violent Goat Clan along the Old Man Mountains, Hairclump spiders deep in the Stinky Swamp, and the most enemiest enemies of all: the clueless crossing guards around Bad Town!

Aliens: Colonial Marines Collector's Edition
Jan 09, 2012 - 10:08 AM - by randir14
BERJAYA

A promo image released today has revealed the Aliens: Colonial Marines collector's edition.

Quote:
Gamekyo is carrying the image to the left, which suggests the collector's edition will offer purchasers three weapons for online matches (M240 Flamethrower, M577 A2 Smart Gun, M41A Pulse Rifle upgrade), a new game mode dubbed USCM (United States Colonial Marine Corps) Academy Firing Range.

It'll also feature a "highly detailed resin display model" featuring a marine strapped into a power loader suit battling an alien, like the one Ripley uses to take on the Queen at the end of Aliens.

The collector's edition has yet to be confirmed by Sega, but the image in question looks genuine.

The publisher has confirmed Colonial Marines will finally be released on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in spring 2012.

Far Cry 2 Retrospective
Jan 08, 2012 - 2:20 PM - by Emabulator
BERJAYA

Phill Cameron takes a look back at Ubisoft Montreal's open world FPS, Far Cry 2, in this week's retrospective from Eurogamer.

Quote:
The fact that guns can jam, that fires can start, that grenades can roll innocuously down slopes and staircases before shredding the surrounding area created a game world where these battlefield stories can occur. And at the same time, it establishes a set of rules that ensures there's drama - eventually. The player will die, at some point, and so you'll have that last minute rescue. You're going to get into a critical state and have to perform some battlefield surgery, pulling bullets out of your arm or some rebar out of your leg. Things go wrong, and stories emerge.

Legend of Grimrock Preview
Jan 08, 2012 - 10:54 AM - by randir14
BERJAYA

Gamespy has written up a preview of Legend of Grimrock.

Quote:
The epic quest to escape the dungeon's iron grip was a daunting journey to embark on, but I found the task of locking in final decisions on how to customize my party equally challenging. Thrust into the cavernous mountain stronghold by their captors, my quartet of prisoner-turned-adventurer protagonists began their trek empty-handed and danger-prone. I needed to craft a well-balanced group, settling on a minotaur fighter and a lizardman warrior for my offensive front line, with an insectoid thief and a human wizardess taking up the missile and spell duties respectively.

Subtle perks between the four races encouraged strategic class pairing. Minotaurs, for example, deal more damage for every human skull they carry in their inventory (I found my first shiny, decapitated noggin at the bottom of a pit trap). Leveling up expanded my party's options for learning spells, enhancing weapon effects, and picking up other handy skills. There was a lot of room for variety and growth for my band of explorers, and I needed every advantage I could muster since the denizens of Mount Grimrock didn't play nice.
