Same mistakes foil UConn men again|With VIDEO report
PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Away from home, secluded in hotels, UConn was supposed to bond. Instead, the Huskies came apart. UConn began most of a week in New Jersey after a brutal beating at the hands of Seton Hall. Some miles down the New Jersey Turnpike, Rutgers decided to send the Huskies home with their hats and a good-riddance note Saturday night.
Palladino: A New Year's wish for curling to rise from the ashes
In theory, this should be a New Year's wish for the year 2012. In fact, this is a wish that will likely extend far beyond the next 12 months. This is a hope that someday, years from now, a new curling club rises out of the ashes in Norfolk to replace the old, a tad rickety, but altogether charming Norfolk Curling Club. The club, which had stood in Norfolk for more than 50 years, was burned to the ground Dec. 18, allegedly by a couple of thrill-seeking arsonists.

Kyle Bonicki scored a game-high 22 points for the Highlanders in a 64-58 Housatonic Valley Athletic League victory over host South Kent on Saturday in boys prep basketball action. Billy Robinson added 15 points and Ryan Shiel chipped in with 13 points and five rebounds for Chase (3-3, 2-0), which beat South Kent for the first time in four seasons.
Lewis: Why you should care about the BCS championship
Heading into the weekend, there were several questions dominating the sports chatter around our speck of the world. Of course, what matters to us doesn't necessarily translate into a more universal fascination, but that's sports. In our neighborhood, these were among the top concerns:
AP source: Yankees' Posada set to retire
NEW YORK — Jorge Posada is planning to retire after 17 seasons with the New York Yankee rather than pursue opportunities with other teams. A person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Saturday that the five-time All-Star catcher will announce his retirement this month.
Is Newsome the best of Ansonia's star backs?
ANSONIA — Arkeel Newsome's achievements this season were nearly unimaginable. All the sophomore tailback did was obliterate the state single-season records for rushing yards (3,763), touchdowns (62) and total points (398). And oh yeah, he also led the nation in rushing. Asked after Ansonia's 38-0 victory over Ledyard in the Class M state championship game if he ever dreamed of having such a season, he answered simply, "No sir, but it is a real good dream, so I'm glad."

Curtain rises Members of Landmark Community Theater have struggled for 18 months for the opportunity to revive the shuttered Thomaston Opera House, and they finally achieved their goal when townspeople granted the nonprofit organization authority to manage the theater. Here's hoping their dogged determination to get in the front door extends to their efforts to bring top-drawer entertainment to Thomaston. Landmark is well financed and comprised of people with broad experience in theater, so there's reason for optimism. This group is deserving of congratulations and thanks from all Thomastonians for bringing the 129-year-old Opera House back to life. But the key to the success of this enterprise is the enthusiasm demonstrated by the folks who buy the tickets, attend the shows and support its fundraising efforts. Now the heat is on Landmark, to stage performances people will want to attend, and on the public, to reward the management by filling the theater show after show. Now that the U.S. Department of Justice is investigating the East Haven Police Department on allegations of unlawful racial profiling, Hispanic lawmakers in Connecticut, including Waterbury Democratic Rep. David Aldarondo, are demanding the state take a stronger stand against this practice. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is taking on his state's public-employee unions again, but this time he seems to have entered the game with a losing hand. The seven unions that filed class-action unions against the state for its efforts to bring retiree health-insurance costs under control have a point. To wit: The unions say the benefits, which taxpayers manifestly can't sustain, are matters of contract and therefore inviolable.
