Indian Police Arrest 2 Men For Sacrificing Child

Child Sacrifce

01/ 2/12 07:20 AM ET   AP

NEW DELHI -- Two men have been arrested in central India for allegedly killing a 7-year-old girl and cutting out her liver in a ritual sacrifice to ensure a better harvest, police said Monday.

Lalita Tati disappeared in October and her dismembered remains were found a week later, Rajendra Narayan Das, a senior police officer in the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh state, told The Associated Press.

Police arrested two men, both poor farmers, last week and they told police they killed the girl to appease their gods and get a better harvest, Das said.

Tati was walking home after watching television at a neighbor's house when she was kidnapped, Das said. The two men confessed to cutting her open and removing her liver as an offering.

Das said the police had gathered enough evidence, apart from the confessions, to charge the two with murder. They would face life in prison or even the death sentence if convicted.

The men were described as "tribals," a term referring to the region's indigenous people, most of whom remain mired in poverty and illiteracy.

Human sacrifices are rare in India but get prominent attention every few years. A deep belief in traditional healers, or witch doctors, is common in mostly tribal Chhattisgarh.

And it's awfully violent and chock full of haters for something so supposedly peaceful. Go figure.

"And it's awfully violent and chock full of haters for something so supposedly peaceful"

What do you mean, supposedly so peaceful? Mankind has worshiped many divinities over the centuries, and very many have never been represented to be peaceful.

The only sacrifice should be of your own animal nature. This is a travesty. I shudder to think of the Karma incurred for such an act.

This is just as horrendous to most Indians as it is to Americans. Strange things happen here sometimes among cultic people; put that in perspective to the huge population of Indian. There will always be the Charles Manson mentallity and sadly innocent people will be the ones to suffer.
Poor precious little child, I am so sorry for her loved ones left behind to grieve such a horrible death. I don't think there is anything comical connected to the awful murder of a innocent little girl just because she is from another country. The minds that can find even slight humor in this tragedy need to be examined as closely as those guilty of this murder.

"...a term referring to the region's indigenous people, most..."

89% of the people in India are indigenous.

Really?

Nope, wrong, doesn't work. I keep seeing a world ruled by mindless regulations that no one ever questions because those are "The Rules" arrived at by those "Who Know Best" and none dare question their "Logic".

Because religion is vile in all forms dear sheep.
04:56 PM on 01/04/2012
Because reliance on "faith" over reason enables people to reach ridiculous conclusions like "sacrificing this child to my supernatural overlords will improve my crop yield"... and it doesn't matter that that makes no sense because, well, it's "faith" now isn't it? It doesn't have to make sense!

If all the Atheist of the world had been promoting the values, ideals, principles and beliefs of "true" Christianity as productively as I have the little girl might be alive today playing with her friends.

What are you talking about?

srsly...

These people are ethnic Indians, correct? So how are they atheist? Or is an atheist just a word you say about people you don't like, without really knowing what it means?

94% of this region are Hindu... are Hindus atheists?

I wonder how the idea that God requires sacrifice ever got into the brain of humans. Even the majority of Christian teaching is based upon the idea that Christ was purposely raised up by God to become the perfect sacrifice by killing him on a cross. Why would God require that? It is much more likely God sent Christ to show people how to live and to establish a faith that emulates his practice. Evil humans put him to death wrongly simply because he questioned the fundamentals of the existing religious practice. Jesus did teach that God requires sacrifice, not of physical death, but death to one's self, so that he or she can truly live this life for others.

Deuteronomy 28 maybe? Seems to condone it, or even wish it for the "disobedient" ... There is as much ugliness in the Bible as there is in any other religion's "holy book" - and evil people in every religion to interpret in whatever way serves their purpose.

It's easy to criticize when you're sitting in an air-conditioned room with refrigerator full of snacks. Turn the lights out in any industrial nation for a few weeks and see what we would start doing to each other. Child sacrifice would not be the worst thing.

child sacrifice would not be the worst thing someone could do? really?

Yes, really. I'm glad you don't think so, though. It tells me that not everyone in the world is as bitterly cynical as I am.

The whole cultural relativism thing died off with the famous explorers of antiquity. We have a connected and educated world now a days. It is perfectly justifiable to criticize a barbaric practice that has no real use or justification.
04:33 PM on 01/03/2012
You mean like government-sponsored marketing of diabetes-causing high fructose corn syrup products to children within our education system?

We have a "relatively" connected and educated world based on the exploitation of petro fuels "now a days". It won't last though. Then we'll get to find out how little we've changed from the barbarians you're criticizing.
