Didn't enjoy this third book at all. The writing style has changed since the first in the series. As if the author had decided to lower prose expectations. The first chapters were good, but then the whole plot developed into a story not at all original. In my opinion there has been no effort in building the characters. Everything seems a bit suspended. The ending was a cartoon strip from Marvel comics with a last line sort of "I'M BACK! HAHAHAHA AAARGH!". I was expecting to see both characters and author grow. Pity.

A good labyrinth but not amaze

I picked up this book as I fancied a read, I wasn't a fan of the start of the book and found the start lacked lustre, I also found the start of the book introduced too many characters at once without giving them depth and description and it was a bit confusing for me, so initially found it hard to warm to, after sticking with the book and skim reading through the first few chapters I started to start enjoying the book as the characters developed more depth and more intrigue was built.

As the book develops it the writing appears to mature and take on a delicious style that is reminiscent of the victorian era and it has enough believable adventure,mystery, and gentlemanly competition to make a good read. I am now looking forward to reading the next instalment if this is to become a series, and could see if the characters are developed further that this could be made into a good film. Therefore, I would have given this book a 4 star as I did enjoy reading it and it has a charm, but as I found the start a bit lack lustre I am giving this book a 3 rather than a 4, a good read for the first book but not amazing.

A Victorian Die Hard...

Imagine Bruce Willis - minus the outrageously clean vest - towards the end of a Die Hard movie set in Victorian London. Grant this character the mental acuity of Sherlock Holmes and we begin to approach James McCreet's Albert Newsome.
The Thieves' Labyrinth is the third outing for Detective (presently demoted) Newsome of the Metropolitan Police Force, and he hasn't got any more likeable, but we can't help but admire his dogged perseverence. A ship and its crew has gone missing in the process of docking in the river Thames (the real star of this tale), a body is dragged from the river with an inexplicable item embedded in its flesh and Newsome is pitted against old rivals George Williamson and Noah Dyson in his race to discover the truth. All this in a novel that is presented with intelligence and a simply delicious vocabulary.
James McCreet just gets better. Read him.
