Quotes of the day
posted at 10:50 pm on January 2, 2012 by Allahpundit
“An amazing admission tonight from Ron Paul.
“In an exclusive interview, I asked him: ‘When you lay your head on your pillow at night, do you see yourself in the Oval Office?’
“‘Not really,’ he said.
“He went on to say that he’s not blind to the odds, but they are ‘not as slim as they were 25 years ago.’”
“A pumped-up Rick Perry, launching a final Iowa campaign swing Monday in pep-rally style, is confronting what will almost certainly be the first electoral defeat of a long life in politics. The question is what happens next…
“With a series of early-state voter tests about to start, there are serious doubts about his ability to survive a poor Iowa finish — and not only among Republican veterans. Party activists, eager for a nominee who can defeat Barack Obama, are watching and wondering…
“In putting his presidential chances on the line in the first Southern primary, he’ll be following a path blazed by another handsome three-term Texas governor who entered the Republican presidential campaign with great promise: John B. Connally, like Perry a conservative Democrat-turned-Republican with appeal to big-money donors. In 1980, a South Carolina defeat turned out to be trail’s end for Big John, whose career never recovered from an $11-million candidacy that yielded just one delegate vote.”
“Newt Gingrich here tonight told a crowd that he made a mistake in saying earlier today that he wouldn’t win the Iowa caucuses.
“He blamed the issue on what he said was a compound sentence structure that the media dissected…
“Gingrich noted to tonight’s crowd in Davenport that some of his supporters were irritated about the comment because it makes it harder for them to round up support for tomorrow’s caucuses. A precinct captain, for example, told him on a telephone conference today that the statement was troubling to his recruitment efforts.”
“The famously conservative paper’s endorsement was a priceless gift. The former House Speaker proceeded to squander it.
“In doing so, Gingrich revealed that he learned all the wrong lessons from his campaign’s collapse this summer and none of the right ones from his remarkable comeback.
“Instead of seizing the moment and making an aggressive case for why the contest was now a two-man race between a movement conservative and flip-flopping moderate — a unique opportunity afforded by the endorsement’s implicit-but-unmistakable critique of Mitt Romney in his firewall state — Gingrich fell back to his familiar habits, a routine marked by too much self-assurance and not enough discipline.
“Between that and some other key factors — among them, Romney’s super PAC blitzkrieg and his own weak fundraising — a campaign that seemed on the cusp of stealing the nomination barely a month ago now faces an ignominious fourth place finish or worse. And the dramatic arc of the final chapter in his political career suddenly seems a lot less triumphant.”
“1) What if Tim Pawlenty had not staked everything on the Iowa Straw Poll? The most important asset held by TimPaw’s low-energy campaign was potential. He was more than acceptable to every single element of the GOP, and he positioned himself almost ideally to benefit from the inevitable demise of other candidates. But he wasn’t around to reap the harvest when nearly all of them imploded, because he threw all his money into Ames and lost. What if he had kept his powder a bit dryer?
“2) What if Mike Huckabee or [fill in the blank] had run? When Huck pulled back from a 2012 campaign in May, he was running first in the most recent national poll of Republicans that included his name, and also had the best favorable/unfavorable ratio in the field. Had he run, he would have been the instant and perhaps overwhelming front-runner in Iowa, where he beat Mitt Romney handily despite a vast financial disadvantage. Considering the heights deeply flawed candidates like Bachmann, Cain and Gingrich reached before their inevitable crashes, how high might Huckabee have flown, with his powerful appeal to evangelical Christians and his knack for gaining favorable ‘earned media,’ even from liberals? And is there any chance Romney would have risked a second loss to Huck in Iowa? No, not one…
“4) What if anti-Romney conservatives had united behind anyone? The most abiding question is what might have happened if the conservatives who kept saying they wanted anybody other than Romney had figured out a way to identify that ‘anybody’ and gotten behind that candidacy. Perhaps they thought Romney couldn’t win and they were free to back their personal favorites. Maybe they figured somebody else would take the risk of going medieval on him and taking him down. But in the end, even the famously disciplined shock troops of the Christian Right couldn’t make up their minds, and unless a final Iowa surge by Rick Santorum provides a lightning rod, they will go to the caucuses fatally divided when they might have been united.”
“This is where four years of planning come in handy. Mr. Romney built a campaign war chest and a pro-Romney super PAC. The Romney campaign and the outside organization could spend millions on ads and mailers taking down rivals, allowing the candidate to remain above the fray and concentrate on his more positive message.
“That message, by contrast to 2008, has been focused, unwavering, relentless. Mr. Romney has taken positions and stuck with them, even if it has meant defending the likes of RomneyCare. In Iowa, New Hampshire and everywhere else, voters have heard—again, and again, and again—the same two messages: He has the business and management experience to competently turn around the country, and he is the most electable against Mr. Obama…
“So while Mr. Romney may not excite them, while he may not be ideal, in light of the other candidate’s problems, and given the election stakes, voters are buying his argument that he is, well . . . good enough. Which is why, barring a surprise, or a late entrant, Mr. Good Enough—through good fortune, dogged determination, and the skillful elimination of his rivals—may end up grabbing the conservative ring in this all-important election year.”

You are lovely and an asset, I wasn’t speaking of you. I don’t think ernesto has been overwhelmed, he has just been out argued in relative short order. I know one thing, a couple of these folks are walking a tight rope of inappropriateness that when they finally slip enough to get banned it is going to be something. Usually those are just drive bys but their wild.
Cindy Munford on January 3, 2012 at 2:01 AM
I shouldn’t grumble. I got spoiled. I got used to arguing Jesus with sharrukin, etc.
I’ve been to the nature or reality, to what’s knowable, argued about the Stoics and what they actually believed according to Cicero, and Loeb’s mistranslations of the Greek in Diogenes Lives of Eminent Philospohers — even a little warping of space and time. The amount of Catholic doctrine I’ve learned alone was worth admission (and I’m not Catholic).
But lately, on my chosen SoCon battlefields, it’s all back to

Some of the pure politics is similar.
But its not all bad. Picked up some allies. But they have to have the same “silly” too.

Actually, that “Six Degrees of Separation” stuff works, sometimes to an alarming degree. (no pun intended)
It even works with posting and letters. I can connect you to Queen Elizabeth II of England in less than six degrees using those:
1. You wrote a post to which I responded.
2. I once wrote a letter to John Howard when he was the PM of Australia.
3. John Howard once wrote a letter to the Queen.
4. The Queen responded to John Howard.
You to the Queen of England in four degrees. Not bad.
Horace on January 3, 2012 at 2:23 AM
Ad Hominem, addressed to Tina. Sort of a cringe-inducing thing, that whole thing was :)
Axe on January 3, 2012 at 2:25 AM
Axe: I forgot to add that John Howard responded to my letter.
That makes it 5 degrees from you to Queen Elizabeth II. Still not bad.
Horace on January 3, 2012 at 2:25 AM
The Washington establishment is trying to interrupt natural economic cycles with socialist and corporatist Keynesian bailouts, but they’re also trying to short circuit the overton window’s natural reaction to Obama, which should be to swing back to the right, and are instead trying to shove a candidate down our throat that is way off to the left towards Obama’s end of the spectrum, accelerating the swing to the left instead of snapping it back to the right.
It’s like the Republican Party is trying to run away and elope with the Democrats.
FloatingRock on January 3, 2012 at 2:29 AM
I’m either creeped out, or awestruck. Gimme a minute to work it out. If I were a woman, I’d already know, but we use what we have :)
Axe on January 3, 2012 at 2:29 AM
Reluctant politician? How many re-elections do you have to run in before you lose that “Reluctant” tag?
As for being honest, when he tells us who wrote the racist stuff in the newsletters i’ll believe the “honest” part.
Sultanofsham on January 3, 2012 at 2:54 AM
Do you really think he’s racist? I don’t; at least probably no more so than grievance mongers claim we’re all racists. He doesn’t strike me as the type, and apparently he’s written a lot of material over the years, before, during and after, and the news letter business is apparently the only aberration.

I like the six degrees of separation thing.
I had a female friend who sat in the next desk over in High School Chemistry. She became a soldier and was stationed at the Pentagon when 9-11 occurred. When President Bush visited the site, he shook her hand.
I believe President Bush gets me to the Queen of England at least as fast.
John Hitchcock on January 3, 2012 at 3:22 AM
I doubt he is, however someone did write that stuff. Who did? Its hard to believe hes being honest when he doesnt out who it is. Why leave a dark cloud like that unless its obscuring something worse.
Sultanofsham on January 3, 2012 at 3:28 AM
John Hitchcock
I can get you to Pope Benedict XVI in less than six degrees:
1. You sat next to a girl in Chemistry.
2. She shook hands with President Bush, so was next to him.
3. Bush shook hands with Benedict XVI and was next to him.
You to the Pope in three degrees. Wanna try for Hitler or Stalin? Easy as pie.

It’s time for Great Satan”s electile dysfuntionary season to get fully crunk bay bee. The next few Tuesdays will see cats in Iowa, New Hampshire (way more better than old Hampshire) South Cackalacky and sun shiny Florida cuss, fuss and do some ballistic ballot casting.
Step back, deep breath, zoom out and *(party with some critical thinking) about these individual GOPeabodies “in the totality of their public lives, study their records and platforms, judge their abilities and views, imagine each of them in the Oval Office making major decisions for the nation and choose the cat who you reckon should get a shot at being 45″
As one of Great Satan”s original Combat Rock Stars and one of 1′s aide de campers sweetly siren’d eons past –
The subject speaks its own importance; comprehending in its consequences nothing less than the safety and welfare of Great Satan, the fate of an empire in many respects the most interesting in the world. It has been frequently remarked that it seems to have been reserved to the people of this country, by their conduct and example, to decide the important question, whether societies of men are really capable or not of establishing good government from reflection and choice, or whether they are forever destined to depend for their political constitutions on accident and force.
If there be any truth in the remark, the crisis at which we are arrived may with propriety be regarded as the era in which that decision is to be made; and a wrong election of the part we shall act may, in this view, deserve to be considered as the general misfortune of mankind.

A Time for Choosing
Jan 2 2012
***********
To the Republicans of the states of Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Florida:
**********************
At this moment of great peril for our nation, you have the privilege of beginning the process of selecting the 2012 Republican presidential nominee—the individual who will save us from the ghastly prospect of an Obama second term, and who will then have the task of beginning to put right our listing ship of state, setting our nation on a course to restored solvency, reinvigorated liberty, and renewed greatness.
Your responsibility is great. Your votes will affect which candidates survive January’s electoral gauntlet, their likelihood of ultimately prevailing, and even whether others will feel impelled to enter the race. You, the voters of Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Florida, will shape the range of choices for your fellow citizens elsewhere in the nation in this crucial year.
How should you decide for whom to vote?

Iran warns U.S. carrier not to return to Gulf; France says EU must agree sanctions
Tuesday, 03 January 2012
************************
Iran’s army chief told the United States that a U.S. aircraft carrier which left the area because of Iranian naval exercises should not return to the Gulf, the state news agency reported on Tuesday as France called on Europe to agree the sanctions against Iran this month.
“Iran will not repeat its warning … the enemy’s carrier has been moved to the Sea of Oman because of our drill. I recommend and emphasize to the American carrier not to return to the Persian Gulf,” Ataollah Salehi told IRNA.
“I advise, recommend and warn them (the Americans) over the return of this carrier to the Persian Gulf because we are not in the habit of warning more than once,” Fars quoted Salehi as saying.

Mitt Romney says Obama breaks vows, just like Kim Kardashian
Jan 2, 2012 19:55 EST
*********************
President Barack Obama and reality television celebrity Kim Kardashian have something in common, according to Mitt Romney – they don’t know how to keep a promise.
“I’ve been looking at some video clips on YouTube of President Obama, then-candidate Obama, going through Iowa, making promises,” Romney said during a campaign stop in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on Sunday.
“I think the gap between his promises and his performance is the largest I’ve seen, well, since the Kardashian wedding and the promise of until death do we part,” said the Republican presidential candidate.

How the Republican caucus works (WITH GALLERY)
**********************************************
**********************************************
The eyes of this nation, and even some others, will be on Iowa on Tuesday as the first official voting of the 2012 presidential campaign takes place.
The winner in Iowa doesn’t always end up with the party’s nomination. Rather, the Iowa caucuses often serve to narrow the field. Political observers say three people can punch a ticket out of the state and remain competition in New Hampshire’s primary and beyond.
Six Republican candidates have been actively campaigning for Iowans’ support in the caucuses. On the Democratic side this year, there’s no suspense. President Barack Obama will be the nominee.
How it works:
Republicans
- Caucuses start at 7 p.m. Because it is already 8 p.m. on the East Coast, party leaders have opted to conduct the presidential preference polling early in the caucuses to accommodate the national radio and TV networks, which are trying to get results on the air during prime time.
- Activists at each meeting elect a leader. Then backers of each candidate deliver speeches on their behalf.

Although I don’t think Rick Santorum would have a snowball’s chance in heck against Obama, at least he isn’t a total clown like Rick Perry. Santorum has comported himself well throughout the campaign, particularly in the debates. I’m not crazy about Santorum’s support for laws banning particular consensual sex acts between adults (that kind of stuff is no one’s business, particularly not the government’s!), and I am somewhat concerned about his position on illegal immigration. Still, Santorum would be a decent nominee… but nothing spectacular.
Romney is still the best choice, by far. Romney comes across as so much more dignified and polished, and he has extensive private sector experience and completed a successful term as governor, where he balanced the budget, opposed sanctuary cities, vetoed pork-laden spending bills and also vetoed pro-abortion legislation. Romney is a very impressive man who would no doubt give Obama the toughest fight. I’m very excited about seeing Romney debate Obama… finally we’re going to have a candidate we can be proud of!
President Romney and Vice President Marco Rubio will be sworn in just a little more than a year from now. 2012 will be a lot better than 2011. Saying goodbye to Obama is definitely something to look forward to!

Contrast the empty suit’s capability in tackling what Ross Kaminsky foretells for 2012 to what our potential contenders have to offer.

Good morning, Gang. We made it! Oh, wait…it’s just the first one.
Oh, well. Here’s my take.
kingsjester on January 3, 2012 at 7:00 AM
If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we would all have a merry christmas.
When you do a ‘what if…?’ scenario, put it a good decade back, at least, so you can get some concept of the probability of it happening. At this point all we can say is that T-Paw didn’t understand what the election cycle process truly entails and that the winner of the Ames Straw Poll is the destined winner of the Ames Straw Poll… nothing else. You get a couple of days of ‘hey! look at me!’ out of it and that is it, and that isn’t enough to launch a campaign.
That goes for the rest of the ‘what if…?’ questions as well and history can tell you about trends and how they work, not about necessary future outcomes. It is only when the trends start blocking positive future outcomes that you have to take note, and that is where we are right now. When you cast your vote ask yourself some questions…
- Is this a person who can figure out what an implosion of the EU means? And then NOT TRY TO SAVE IT AS IT DOESN’T WORK.
- Is this a person who can figure out what the massive debt implosion problem in China means? And then NOT DO SOMETHING TO TRY AND PROP IT UP.
- Is this the person who would be willing to stare down Congress on spending increases and begin the long term rollback of the federal government? And then STAND BY THAT AND NOT FALTER EVEN IF IT MEANS OVER-RIDE AFTER OVER-RIDE OR GRIDLOCK?
It isn’t about ‘electability’ or going towards the ‘moderates’… the third way between Left Progressivism and Right Progressivism isn’t Center Progressivism, as it is Progressivism that is the problem and the disease. And if a candidate can’t understand that, then they are so out of touch with liberty and freedom as to not understand that they belong to you, not the government. A thrifty authoritarian government is STILL an authoritarian government, and if you don’t love being told what to do BY GOVERNMENT then you had best find a candidate who understands THAT and vote for them. They might not be ‘electable’ but they will actually run ON something other than being ‘electable’.

ajacksonian: Of our contenders, who do you see as closest to the description that you gave at 7:05am?
If not any of them come close to that ideal, do you foresee someone coming out of the woodwork to meet the challenge?

And so it begins. The Dems have outfitted their opposition crew in Iowa to begin the attacks against Romney, who the believe will be the GOP candidate.
The sob stories will begin with anecdotes to sway to masses.

Good morning all.
Not to offend Iowans, but after the next 48 hr news cycle passes, I hope I never hear the word “Iowa” again. Well ok, at least until the 2016 election circus, uh, I mean, cycle, begins.

Chuck Norris via TownHall asks the first five of ten questions that we must weigh in choosing our next president. It’s a thoughtful piece.

Nobody knows who is going to win in Iowa so we get a bunch of hedged predictions.
Romney camp no matter how he does in Iowa, he’s the winner LOL!
Rick Perry we are hoping to come in 4th.
Newt Gingrich 200 folks for ground organization in Iowa falling in the polls.
Ron Paul, Once and for all we find out if his support matches his polling. Ron Paul managed to pull in 10% in one district back in 2008. I have not heard or read anything that has stated this caucus is going to have any bigger turn out than caucus in the past so exactly which republican caucus goers are staying home, and being replaced by Paul’s libertarians, independents, truthers, and fringe caucusing?

Yikes!
Why single out just blacks? Hispanics, illegals, etc. are welfare, too. Why mention race at all? Plenty of whites are on welfare, too. Welfare is bad for ALL people, not just “blacks”. And, as a politician, he should have found a more tactful, diplomatic, less racial way to put this.
Yikes.

“It was recently observed that Ron Paul was to the left of Obama on national security and the best evidence for that statement can be found when one year ago Ron Paul joined forces with Barney Frank on a proposal to gut national defense via a panel of experts, quite a few of whom were tied to George Soros.
In July 2010, Barney Frank and Ron Paul co-authored a Huffington Post article rolling out their Sustainable Defense Task Force. The Task Force “consisting of experts on military expenditures that span the ideological spectrum” would recommend a trillion dollars in defense cuts. The experts, however, didn’t quite “span the ideological spectrum” — more like float under it.
11 of the 14 “experts” were tied to George Soros.”

Paulistinians, how did you overlook that “conspiracy”?
Alex Jones goes nuts at the mere mention of Soros’ name.

That was a great article, I have been wondering how The Won was going to go after Gov. Romney. Trotting out Bain lay-offs seems dicey. I wonder if the Solyndra folks were greased enough to stay out of the spotlight, that would be a twofer for Republicans.
