'Brilliant 24 track compilation that traces the history of Indonesian kroncong music. Kroncong is a mixture of European, Asian and possibly Arabic and African music. It is believed to originate in the communities of freed Portuguese slaves in the 16th century although the modern, classical style dates back to the 1920s or 30s. Vocals are the most important element accompanied by small guitars, a standard guitar, cello, contrabass, flute and violin. This 24 track CD compiles many rare, early recordings from Netty, Krontjong Orchest Eurasia, Miss Riboot, Miss Lee, Kartini, Ratna, and later recordings by Waldjinah and Gesang.

The small kroncong guitar, also the name of a music, is derived from the Portuguese braguinha, sharing its root with the Hawaiian ukulele. Kroncong music is believed to have originated in the communities of freed Portuguese slaves in the 16th century. European influence from this time can also be heard in the music of the Batak people of North Sumatra, and from the end of the 19th century, the beginnings of guitar accompaniment incorporated within a distinctly Indonesian idiom in music from Sumatra, South Sulawesi and elsewhere.

Kroncong [currently spelled Keroncong in Indonesian] is now considered old-fashioned folk music by most Indonesian youth, although efforts have been made since the 1960s to modernise the genre by adding electric guitars, keyboards and drums, notably in so-called Pop Keroncong sung by Hetty Koes Endang. tanx & praise to to arvind ji & cletus ji for this impossibly rare musique. a sublime & jubilantly melancholique collection

Again sorry if anyone clicked my profile and saw that. I am ashamed and will bow out of commenting for a while.

Owl-
Have you seen this home made film footage of Charlie Chaplin in Java/Bali? My gamelan playing friends are going bonkers for it.

Oh and this album is fantastic. The hillbilly inspired indo music is so otherworldly.
Thanks
