Behind the Music: Gaming's Best Composers Speak

By Dan Staines | PC Special Features | Nov 15, 2011 5:39 AM | Comment

Making music for videogames is no easy thing. In addition to the inherent difficulties associated with any creative process, composers who work with videogames face an array of unique artistic, technical, and organizational challenges. Perhaps even more than their contemporaries in film and television, videogame composers must be supremely flexible and able to write for a variety of popular and esoteric genres, sometimes all within the same game. And that's just for starters. To get some real insight into the process of composing music for videogames, we contacted four of the industry's biggest names -- Sam Hulick, Jason Graves, Sascha Dikiciyan, and Cris Velasco -- and asked them to talk in-depth about the unique challenges they faced on their latest projects. L.A. Noire PC Review

By Nathan Grayson | PC Reviews | Nov 14, 2011 12:45 PM | Comment

I really can't handle guilt. If you catch me in a lie, it's written all over my face. Then I start talking, and things take a serious tumble downhill. Off a cliff. Into a cactus and porcupine convention. "Er, um, well, you see..." I mumble. "Oh, this waterfall of sweat? It's a genetic disorder. My mother was a river." That, however, is nothing compared to how it feels afterward. The disapproval, the dishonesty, the knowledge that I really and truly screwed up big time -- it's nearly enough to make me physically ill. L.A. Noire is brilliant because it manages to put you through all of that. Read More »

Tomb Raider Relics That Need to Stay Buried

By Nathan Grayson | PC Special Features | Nov 14, 2011 7:23 AM | Comment

Lara Croft may be headed back to her days as a fresh-faced (for all of 15 seconds) globe-trotting neophyte, but her franchise has seen some things, man. Fortunately, reboots are great for kicking out the old, cracking foundation and replacing it with something less riddled with defects. And while Tomb Raider deserves heaping piles of respect and at least one honorary college degree in a subject of its choosing, let's face it: The franchise is about as far from perfect as Lara's latest island getaway is from proper civilization. So, what are the biggest sins of Lara's past? And is the new Tomb Raider deftly bounding over those pitfalls? Read More »

BioShock Infinite Features More Enemies, Greater Weapon Range

By Nick Winter | PC News | Nov 13, 2011 4:55 AM | Comment

The previous two BioShock games largely focused on intense close-combat action in claustrophobic spaces, making the shotgun the weapon-of-choice for many players. Creative director Ken Levine has told Playstation Blog that the third installment of Irrational Games' FPS series will include a far greater variety of combat situations, including areas requiring long-range weapons.
