Coming to a Writer’s Block

Despite my long list of blog ideas I keep, I’ve been feeling a bit uninspired. Whenever I have writer’s block, I imagine myself actually coming to a writer’s block.

BERJAYABERJAYABERJAYABERJAYABERJAYABERJAYABERJAYABERJAYAUnfortunately, the writer’s block is rarely helpful.

  1. BERJAYA Russ Nickel says:

That line is always so long! I usually resort to massive quantities of caffeine to help me bypass it.

  2. BERJAYA Neeks says:

I work on something else for a while and go back to the ‘blocked’ project later. I can only beat my head against that wall so many times. lol

  3. BERJAYA underwhelmer says:

Ugh. Waiting in line is no fun, writer’s block or no. Just don’t check yourself into the Overlook Hotel… it doesn’t end well.

  4. Writer’s Block:
When your imaginary friends won’t talk to you…
(Not mine. Saw it on a t-shirt.)

  5. BERJAYA intrepidtraveller says:

Writers Block…nearly as frustrating as a road block. Nearly. :)

  6. BERJAYA strataflora says:

haha, I love this depiction! been there before too, with writing…and design (only I like to call that “blank page syndrome”. thanks for stopping by my blog – hope you get through the block quickly! :)

  7. Ah, that is the best depiction of writer’s block I have seen in a long time.

  8. BERJAYA Kevin says:

Doesn’t your husband ever give you inspiration?

  9. Yeah, I’ve been somewhere in that line recently!

  10. BERJAYA DewNestry says:

Writer’s block is a foul thing… I would always imagine that from now on, too.

  11. I absolutely love this — can’t count how many “writer’s blocks” I’ve come to of late — especially since making the decision to become a full-time freelance writer. Apparently that’s a cruel joke “The Universe” has decided to play on me…

Thanks for putting into pix what I feel in my brain ALL the time!
    :)

  12. Cute and funny, especially that last image :)

  13. it was awsome and funny and i love it soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo muxh.

  14. And that’s when you start people-watching and writing about the other people in line…

  15. BERJAYA Yesenia says:

Love it! Although, James Patterson says, “I’m allergic to writer’s block.” Hmmm . . . how do I get there?

  16. Been there too many times – in fact I’m still waiting in line.

  17. BERJAYA Elizabeth says:

I get where you’re coming from… it’s hard to get back from there but it does eventually happen!! Good Lunc and love the post!

  18. BERJAYA taureanw says:

LOL! I needed a laugh thx! From now on when I can’t think of anything to write this will pop in my head :-)

  19. BERJAYA frdradio says:

I can totally relate to that…

  20. BERJAYA TJ Johnston says:

My image of a writer’s block is an intestinal obstruction. A doctor might be needed to make it “pass” or perform an invasive procedure. :D

  21. BERJAYA Ta-Da says:

Have such a bad case of writer’s block I couldn’t think of what to write in the comments!

  22. These illustrations are great. A great way to get your point across quickly in this medium. “The medium is the message…”

  23. BERJAYA jenniesisler says:

This is too funny! I must be the last one in line, as I’ve been blocked the last couple of days and am participating in NaNoWriMo!

  24. BERJAYA Anne Schilde says:

“It’s more or less what it is.” :)

  25. BERJAYA Dancediaries says:

Haha! love it love it! very funny, (in fact hilarious!) nice work

  26. BERJAYA J.C.V. says:

    Very funny! I love it.

  27. ooh, lookit you, you made the front page! :D

  28. maybe in doing this you can think of imaginative ways to by pass it, bulldozer perhaps…

  29. BERJAYA patricemj says:

This post reminds me of one of my favorite children’s books, Harold and the Purple Crayon. Don’t know why exactly, but I think you and the boy would like each other a lot. The crowd scene is brilliant.

  30. BERJAYA abichica says:

Writers block, iv been through it too many times.. really great post.. :-)

  31. I am currently working on the script for an animated short film, and today the writer’s block is starting to creep in. My remedies for overcoming it is coffee, film scores (especially John Williams or Michael Giacchino). I find listening to music that corresponds with the piece I am writing works wonders.

  32. BERJAYA mohanmohan says:

Funny! You deserve your day of FP fame for giving us all a good laugh.

  33. BERJAYA restlessjo says:

Hate to say this strikes a chord, but it just might!

  34. BERJAYA Isla White says:

That is so funny and so real. I don’t so much have writers blocks as writers stop. I can go from free flow to no flow overnight. I reckon it is a state of mind with a bucketful of time thrown in for good measure.

  35. BERJAYA oreganogreen says:

At least you don’t have brain freezes, like Rick Perry’s problem the other night. I think a brain freeze is similar to writer’s block: they are both like being in quicksand. The harder you try to think of something, the harder it pulls you down. I would recommend doing something else for a while, and your brain will open up to new thoughts.

  36. BERJAYA letempspasse says:

Hilarious cartoon. Maybe you should pretend to be a brave knight, high up on your valiant horse and go for it: jump over the barricade and ride into the sunset !

  37. Writer’s block party, anyone?

  38. BERJAYA Chrissiemusa says:

Haha I think all writers can identify with this. Writers block is a pain. Great cartoon and that line was huge! I hope the one I’m in will move a little faster :) thanks for the post.

  39. This is so true, but whenever i get stuck i always feel as though it is just me alone with nothing to write, its nice to see another writers perspective on this thing that troubles every creative person in the world at one point in their life

  40. BERJAYA countoncross says:

So funny! While you are standing in that huge line, take out your iphone, ipad, etc and start writting something. :-)

  41. BERJAYA Lafemmeroar says:

Writer’s Block Party on my site … :)

  42. BERJAYA abbylarson says:

I’ve been standing in that line for almost a year. I’ll get a little inspiration here and there, but as a whole, my writing abilities have disappeared. It’s so depressing. Honestly, a lot of it has to do with the lack of drama in my life. I write best when my life is crumbling at my feet, and lately my life has been near perfect.

  43. Rae, I feel as if we’re old friends, as I’ve watched your comments on other FP blogs. Your charming logo is distinctive enough to be recognized by lots of us blogger.

I lOve, lOVe, LOVe your concept of writer’s block!

    Ronnie

  44. BERJAYA starsweare says:

these illustrations caught my eye on Freshly Pressed, good work!

  45. BERJAYA FLiDAY says:

    Haa Funny little Drawings, Nice.

  46. BERJAYA Sara says:

Oh God! This’s the best way to describe it! The block just stands right there, you can’t bypass it and waiting for it to “unblock” itself is all what you’ve got!
If I were the best cartoonist on Earth, I wouldn’t draw it better! ;)

  47. Are you sure you want to be a writer? It seems that you can be an illustrator, too :-)

  48. Love it! Writers’ block is the bane of my existence sometimes – and every other writer I know. Great way of portraying it. Funnily enough, I posted last week (in words) about my own ways of dealing with it – if you don’t mind, I’ll drop a link on that post through to this one. Great stuff. And thanks.

  50. BERJAYA 1graypillar says:

hahaha this is awesome! Love that, I can totally relate.

  51. BERJAYA etomczyk says:

Next cartoon you do about writers block should show the slow rise in panic as any number of writing deadlines draw near and attempt to storm the road block. Mob hysteria! Then, of course, light bulbs go off over the cartoon people’s heads because that in and of itself becomes the next story. At least that is what I’m trying to calm myself with as I stare at two fortune cookie sayings as I try to conjure up next week’s blog post. Aauuuugh! Congrats on being FP’D.

  52. BERJAYA Casey_Leigh says:

This is why I blog about current events…minimizes writers block…although I do have to rely on society to do the dumb things that make the news…who am I kidding, I hardly ever have W.B….society is so dumb…no offense.

  53. Thanks for the laugh. I overcame writers’ block yesterday, after 2 stalled months, and it was such a joyous experience and a release! Finally getting my ideas out on paper was [almost] worth the agony of the block.

  54. BERJAYA Dounia says:

This post is fantastic – it greatly deserves its status of freshly pressed. Now I will picture those drawings whenever I get writer’s block (which is more often than I care to admit). Good luck with the writer’s block!

  55. BERJAYA shiinead says:

wow. great blog. short sweet and to the point.
    well done :)

  56. Congrats, Girl!
FP’d is waaaay cooler than the mainpage on FARK…
(Ok…but it’s as least as cool.)

  57. BERJAYA christine says:

Recognized your name on wordpress’ FP page. Congrats! And your post is hilarious! Thanks for the laugh!

  58. very cool! provides inspiration to the rest of us! :) Short and sweet.

  59. BERJAYA uponatlas says:

So so true! And congrats on getting Freshly Pressed!
    :)

  60. BERJAYA Alyssa says:

I usually picture some grumpy old man (my brain) throwing big, white blank blocks at me that I keep tripping over. He’s always one step ahead, that rude jerk, and has some pretty snarky comments. I love that I’m not the only one that pictures these sort of things! Too funny.

  61. BERJAYA Jason says:

I’ve been suffering from writer’s block lately too. Congratulations, you made it!

  62. BERJAYA angriestpear says:

    Congrats on being Freshly Pressed!

  63. BERJAYA Joe Joe 5 says:

For some reason I always pictured “writer’s block” as a large cement block, like a large cube. A big gray cement block, blocking where I was trying to go. Your depiction is much more interesting though. Good job on having a more creative writer’s block than me.

  64. I’ve always found I get the most inspiration when I’m doing the most mindless things, i.e. showering, sleeping, the dishes, etc. I always come back with good ideas, especially if I get the time to write them down.

  65. BERJAYA Melissa says:

Congrats on the FP! I love the images. And the fact that you keep a list of blog ideas. I’ve been meaning to do that…

  66. BERJAYA Anna says:

    Aaaaah! Congrats on the FP-ness!

  67. BERJAYA Silva Gang says:

Nice job Rae! I actually have writer’s block right now. I’m supposed to be writing for my freelance work, and nothing is coming out (call it the proverbial brain fart). I think writer’s block, magnified by procrastination and boredom, is the kiss of death. I’ve already sorted the shoes in my closet… and then re-sorted them… and then re-sorted the re-sort. It’s amazing the clarity that resulted from all this. ;)

  68. I love your post. You nailed it on the head! Congratulations with the Freshly Pressed!

  69. BERJAYA Beetlebuggy says:

Love the cartoon and the story, I suffer majorly from that and you just put it in perspective :P I did a cartoon once too and it was so much fun. Time consuming though, hence I have only one cartoon to ever talk about. LOL You should seriously do a series.

  70. BERJAYA kelleynymph says:

I have had the same feeling before. Usually, when I come to a block, I shift into working on another project or idea for a while, or I watch a movie, or listen to music. Usually those things help to inspire me… or at least take my mind off of the frustration for a bit. :P

  71. BERJAYA luaydpk says:

I like this post, nice and I enjoy it…..

  72. BERJAYA Antara says:

Oh my you should totally start a comic strip on writers!!!
    Congrats on getting freshly pressed!

  73. haha! genius!
I am so there right now, so maybe that’s why I find this especially awesome. Or maybe it’s just because this post is especially awesome.
    congrats on getting freshly pressed!

  74. BERJAYA KeitherB says:

Im new to the blogging world …and Im glad to have come across this blog
Im finding blogging is pretty addictive …take care , keith

  75. Rae,
Keep on keeping’ on ’cause this post (which was a happy accidental find on my part) was fantastic. In fact, I think you read my mind…are your still reading my mind?! Okay, time to post and go.
    peas and loaf,
    G.

  76. This is too cute. You have a fun mind.

  77. BERJAYA Karen says:

Thank you for including me in the line but I wanted to be wearing the red dress, not yellow. :)
    Great post!

  78. BERJAYA Nova says:

    I was just there!

  79. BERJAYA enoisme says:

Your having a writers block & you can’t get on the writer’s block. It’s a lose-lose situation. Well you can always cut the line to get on the writers block, whats the worst that can happen? ;)

  80. Hi
    Congratulation on being Freshly Pressed.
The cartoons are cute! I loved the “eyes” for you caricature! :)
I am blogger not a writer (I have been given visible, verbal and silent smirks if i let the word writer slip in) and if there is a term like Blogger’s Block I would be first in line with not only a block but a BLOCK. I started my blog trying to do a ” Julie and Julia” with one blog per day, but after 50 odd blogs and poetry (mostly in Hindi, my national language) I started hitting block after block after block! :)
And here is the joke I actually signed up for NaNoWriMo too!
    Talk about overshooting!

So are you all Writer’s Block queue people or is someone there in Blogger’s Block queue too!
    Regards!

  81. BERJAYA wangiwriter says:

Great entry! I have shared it on Facebook too. Congratulations!

  82. BERJAYA basangsisiw says:

Been there… Actually, I usually have it every now and then. :(

  83. BERJAYA prrnbd says:

    Good conversation. i like this

  84. This is a fabulous cartoon. You should send it in to Writer’s Digest magazine. It really is great!

  85. That’s hilarious! And so fitting with NaNoWriMo month and all. ;)

  86. BERJAYA ilse watson says:

Oops. How funny. I’ve written some articles about writer’s block on my blog if you want to visit.
Have a great day – keep writing and go back to your list and just START!
    Kind regards, Ilse

  88. BERJAYA valentinedee says:

Adorable take on writer’s block. As a writer, it thankfully doesnt happen often, but when it does, I step away from the project and go outdoors to think. Usually works for me.

    http://valentinedefrancis.blogspot.com/

  89. So excited for you! It was just a matter of time! Glad your talents are out there for the world to see.

  90. BERJAYA scribedoll says:

I love your cartoons! What a fabulous idea! Writer’s block… Humm… I never suffer from writer’s block. Instead, I have Chronic Procrastination Syndrome.

  91. BERJAYA evervescence says:

Great cartoon! I certainly can relate to that feeling and I love the metaphor of an actual block!

  92. BERJAYA Dan says:

I was really relieved when I clicked on this post and it wasn’t a list of unsuccessful tips for how to overcome writer’s block — #14: keep a dream journal, #74: curl up next to the fire — that always ends with #145: Just get out there and write, buackroo!

    So really, thanks! :)

    -Dan

  93. BERJAYA cuppachatter says:

It is a pain.I just sleep and wait for another week till something inspires me back.

  94. This is a very effective, witty and funny metaphor

I hope to get out of the line soon enough. :)

  99. BERJAYA TEworks says:

Great post! I do a monthly podcast and as I respond to this post, I will admit that I have wandered off to reading your post to keep from admitting that I don’t have anything to write for December’s script! Yes, I’m in the cartoon line; no. 112 staring off into space, LOL.

  100. Ah I love its! This is adorable and I’m pretty sure I’m going to picture myself in this queue (hopefully standing next to someone awesome!)

  101. BERJAYA catlas says:

We all can relate to this so well! Thank you for a great post!!!!

  102. You made me smile. Thanks!

  103. Your metaphoric block brings out the stubborn and wily in me. I’d storm that thing and come up with an idea just to spite the guy who’s guarding it.

  104. BERJAYA iamsplatt says:

I LOL’D at this so hard!

  105. As I was saying to Sophia Loren (this was years ago, when I worked in her stables), it’s not that I run out of things to say, it’s that I sometimes sit in front of the typewriter or a blank page and a sense of heaviness overcomes me. Well, actually, it’s more than a sense, since at the time I weighed 300 pounds and I’m barely 5’10″. But the effort to write seems so great. Then she would lead me off to one of the stalls, and all of the sudden I’d have loads of energy. But it never seemed to last. By the time we had uh cleaned out the stall, I’d be as full of torpor as I was before.
She gave me the stable job because I told her that I needed something to hold me over while I worked on my screenplay. It was a Western that was going to take place in Scotland (one of the so-called “Haggis Westerns”). She wanted to star in it. When after 6 months I had produced nothing, she realized I was as full of shit as I’d allowed her stables to become, and she booted me out on my ass.
    Sigh.

  106. I love this! I broke up with writers block and wrote it “dear john” letter a few months ago lol.

  107. BERJAYA Angeline M says:

yup, I’m with Christine@100things100days…I’d back up…way back, then start running and do a jump over the hurdle like in the Olympics :) Ta Da!!!!

  108. BERJAYA olletron says:

To block the writers’ block, one must come up with a writers’ block block; i.e. being prepared. Unfortunately, this only works in the whimsical world of metaphor…

  109. BERJAYA ireney128 says:

Love this! I just overcame a bit of wrtier’s block … hoping I won’t return there anytime soon! Great post!

  112. BERJAYA MaiBao says:
