Professor Layton and the Last Specter is less than two weeks from its stateside release. The game hit store shelves in Japan almost two years ago, but soon it will be our turn to check out Layton's latest. The game is not only the fourth entry in this quirky puzzle series, but also a prequel to the last thee titles.
Yesterday I finally got my review copy of Last Specter. While I'm only an hour or so in, the game is already a very "Laytonesque" affair (to quote Emmy, one of Last Specter's new characters). With lots of text intermingled with a variety of puzzles, if you've ever played a Layton game you should feel right at home.
The story, unsurprisingly, is already full of intrigue. A mysterious figure from the Professor's past. A seemingly unsolvable mystery. Puzzling puzzles that pop up out of nowhere. While I've just barely dipped my toes into the Last Specter waters, the game wasted no time setting several mysteries into motion - and I'm eager to get to the bottom of all of them.

Whatever you do... don't look behind you!
It's been awhile since I played a Layton game, and I have to say it already feels good to be back in the Professor's world. We'll see how it all pans out, but if the game can keep the charm, colorful characters, and clever puzzles coming, this promises to be another promising addition to the Layton line.
Keep an eye out for my full review of Professor Layton and the Last Specter in the next week or so. In the meantime, stayed tuned to IGN for all the latest.
