Mention the term FMV to most anyone who played videogames in the 90s, and you're all but guaranteed to get a derisive sneer in reply. Yes, there was a time when game developers--having been unleashed by the advent of CD-ROM technology and the exponential increase in data storage that came with it--collectively decided that the next great gaming frontier was interactive movies. Unfortunately, the vast majority of such titles were by no means Tarantino joints in terms of story or production values, with most being glorified choose-your-own-ending movies with very poor video quality. As a result, the crash and burn of the FMV game genre sparked a significant decline in the PC gaming sector from which it took years to fully recover.
But that's not to say all efforts in the FMV space were terrible. A precious few were actually really good, and probably none more so than Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within. By no means a perfect game, this Sierra title still hit far more often than it missed. But does that mean it's worth dusting off and playing in the context of a plethora of modern gaming choices, or is it simply some timely Halloween nostalgia better left in the attic? Find out by watching this week's episode of METAL JESUS ROCKS!:
I had largely jumped off the Sierra bandwagon and latched on to LucasArts by the time the Gabriel Knight series came along; sounds like I really missed out on something special.
PC Gamer has the scoop on a new Mechwarrior title being developed by Piranha Games.
Quote:
After two years of near-total silence about the fate of the MechWarrior reboot, Piranha Games have announced MechWarrior Online, a free-to-play, team-based multiplayer BattleMech sim. Its also going to tell the story of the Battletech universe in real-time, starting from just before the Clan Invasion of 3050. Each day, players will do battle on behalf of the universes major factions, and each day in the game will represent a single days action in the fictional Inner Sphere. It will go live in the second half of 2012.
MechWarrior Online (MWO) might be free-to-play, but MWO Creative Director Bryan Ekman and Piranha President Russ Bullock insist this is going to be a proper MechWarrior game in the tradition of MechWarrior 2 through 4, not a successor to the Xbox action game Mech Assault. Ekman says joystick support is a strong probability, and both call this a Mech sim.

The actual fighting's been improved a lot since Oblivion's occasional mess of unconnected blade swinging. It's now a much more solid and physical affair to heft your weapon into people's faces. There are also some great finishing moves that gut and slice enemies for a messy finish. You can equip different things in each hand and you can save the most useful combinations as instantly selectable favourites - a sword in your right, fire magic in the left, axe and an ice spell, a bow, whatever. You can then switch depending on what you're fighting.
GamesRadar has posted a preview of Ubisoft Shanghai's upcoming survival-horror game, I Am Alive.

Next we're transported to a subway level where we get our first taste of combat. With a little girl strapped to the hero's back (we didn't get filled in on the story here, but it seems like he must be trying to transport her to safety), he carefully makes his way past a group of thugs looking for a fight, and tells the toddler to close her eyes. As four of them circle around, closing in menacingly, one guy seems subtly different from the other three he's cockier and seems to be the one in charge. As the protagonist approaches him, he quickly hits X to perform a surprise attack by slitting his throat with a knife, then turns his gun on the other three who quickly surrender.
In this way, it doesn't seem like combat in the traditional sense, but rather a kind of strategic ballet where you have to choose how and when to act in order to survive. Pull the knife at the wrong moment, and you open yourself up to being overtaken by the gang's superior numbers. We saw the scene described above play out unsuccessfully once, where there were thugs flanking the main character on either side so that after he took out one of them, he couldn't hold the others at gunpoint all together. Conflict can be avoided sometimes too, and most enemies won't attack at all if you don't run and don't have a weapon drawn.
Andrew Smee takes a look back at DICE's WWII shooter, Battlefield 1942, in this week's retrospective on Eurogamer.
Quote:
Wake Island. That was the map DICE put in the demo. A crescent shaped rock in the Pacific Ocean, it was home to a dusty airfield and no more than a dozen threadbare shacks housing some rusty tanks. The dangerous waters surrounding this lonely lump of sand included a submarine, battleship and, most spectacularly, a fully driveable aircraft carrier.
In what has to be one of the least subtle battle tactics ever hatched, an optimistic player on the attacking Japanese side could try and drive this gigantic steel behemoth away from its anchored position, with the vain hope that the defending Americans wouldn't notice. Though this would inevitably result in the feared American war cry: "You bastard! That's cheating! I thought we agreed no ships! Come on, I have to have my dinner soon!"
GameSpot has posted a hands-on preview of Ubisoft Montreal's upcoming action adventure game, Assassin's Creed: Revelations.

With slain guards swimming in pools of their own blood, we slipped through the gates of the arsenal. Inside, we used Ezio's upgraded Eagle Sense ability to locate and stalk Manuel's slimy ethereal trail, which had been left painted to the cobblestones underfoot. Finally inside the building, we opened up large wooden crates where muskets were being stored. Unfortunately, even pro assassins aren't always as stealthy as they think they are, and we were spotted in the act, forcing us to run rather than stay and fight. Ezio's free running had us leaping over gaps between suspended wooden slats, scaling the edges of a ship and using the game's many conveniently placed ziplines and the beneficial forces of gravity to zoom to safety, ditching our less-nimble pursuers in the process.

With the weather finally turning cooler, it is hard to justify playing games and not doing outside work. But I am sure I will come up with something. What are you playing this weekend?
I know this may not be of interest to a lot of people, as it was not really reported at the time.
Adam Zamoyski (whom I worked with at Lionhead Studios & Headstrong games) passed away at the age of 27 on September 7th due to acute lymphoblastic leukemia. In the game development scene around London and Guildford this has been a big blow for a lot of people.
GameSpot is reporting that Warner Bros., THQ, and Capcom have signed on to bring the first outside offerings to EA's digital distribution service, Origin.
Quote:
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, THQ, and Capcom will be the first wave of third-party publishers to bring their titles to the Origin store. Starting in November, Batman: Arkham City, Saint's Row: The Third, and others will make their Origin debuts. More titles from the aforementioned publishers are promised for the following months.
Along with the confirmation of third-party partners comes word from EA that Origin has crossed the 6 million registered user mark. The publisher also highlighted recent additions to the service including live streaming demos, free-to-play game, and beta cloud storage for game saves and gameplay achievements.
Halloween can be frightening for credit cards too thanks to Valve and the Steam Halloween Sale.
Quote:
Halloween is almost here, and we know a lot of you are pretty scared. Normally, our advice would be to try to keep it together and just ride this thing out. But this year, we have a better idea: let Steam be your safe harbor from the terror that will probably be haunting your, say, house, for instance.
With that in mind, from now through October 31st, we're offering discounts on a bunch of great games. Oh, these discounts will be shocking. Though they won't be scary in any meaningful way. Let these insane - but deliberately, rationally insane - deals be the one good, pure thing you cling to throughout the dark days ahead. Not sold? What if we told you that for every game you buy, we promise to try to kill a monster. Like maybe a skeleton. In fact, that's our Steam Halloween pledge to you: Sensible savings and we are going to murder a skeleton.
Paradox Interactive and Arrowhead Studios have announced Magicka: The Stars are Left, a new adventure for their spell casting action game. The game is scheduled to launch this winter.
Quote:
Paradox Interactive and Arrowhead Studios have exciting news for Magicka fans, straight from the Inn's Mouth: Everybody's favorite magical multiplayer massacre is taking on an all-new adventure in Magicka: The Stars are Left. Designed for players who love to craft the hundreds of different spells available in Magicka, this new campaign will pit up to four wizards at once against a horror-mystery inspired by the popular Cthulhu Mythos. The Stars are Left will boast a much requested feature from the players -- a new adventure campaign, including several terrifying new enemies, bosses awakened from the depths of insanity, and several other miscellaneous Miskatonic minions. Other spoofs ending in "-craft" may or may not also be included.
In an act described by industry colleagues as "more insane than a black goat with a thousand young," Magicka: The Stars are Left will be available not only to players who purchase the expansion, but to all of their friends, as well. So long as the host player in a co-op group owns the content, every one of their co-wizards will be able to co-experience the mind-killing terror of the new expansion.
Reported by a user on Neogaf's forums, it seems the reviewer for the new PixelJunk title breezed through the game on easy to finish it quickly, then lied about it in the writeup - and was caught by the developer!

@DaemZero if you beat it on normal you would have seen the entire ending sequence
