Scenes From The Snowstorm...

We're hunkered-down here, for sure. Two inches of ice, a foot of snow, and then a 1/4" crust of ice on top, My neighbor and I have helped three neighbors get un-stuck from bad spots on the road. It's truly a winter wonderland. I'm glad I've got plenty of food in the house.

At any rate, here are some pics...

BERJAYAI was expecting the top of this tree to snap off in the storm. Lucky so sar. It was damaged in last year's big storm.

We've Lost Howard Zinn...

I have no words for my sadness.

via New York Times

oward Zinn, an author, teacher and political activist whose book “A People’s History of the United States” became a million-selling leftist alternative to mainstream texts, died Wednesday in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 87 and lived in Auburndale, Mass.

The cause was a heart attack, his daughter Myla Kabat-Zinn said.

Published in 1980 with little promotion and a first printing of 5,000, “A People’s History” was, fittingly, a people’s best-seller, attracting a wide audience through word of mouth and reaching 1 million sales in 2003. Although Professor Zinn was writing for a general readership, his book was taught in high schools and colleges throughout the country, and numerous companion editions were published, including “Voices of a People’s History,” a volume for young people and a graphic novel.

You can see the whole production of "The People Speak" at iTunes. Perhaps Hulu, too.

Henry Kissinger is still alive. So's Dick Cheney. There's just, plain something wrong with the force.

Best Wishes To John Cole...

DougJ sends word on John Cole's shoulder surgery.

via Balloon Juice

John’s surgery was rough-— when they got in, they discovered things were a lot worse than they thought. The surgery lasted three hours. He can’t drive or lift anything for six weeks.

But other than that, he’s okay.

Good to hear.

Quote Of The Day...

It may be unintentional, but this says it all.

via Atrios

"I am celebrating the spending freeze by declaring that liquor rations are up."

Indeed. Rations have nearly tripled over the past few weeks here, in my house. God Bless the Quartermaster, and damn him to Hell! My liver has been threatening divorce since last Tuesday.

Our Government, as it currently stands, boils down to one question:

"How do you like your crotch kicked?"

Options:
1. You can have your crotch kicked 24/7 by the snarling, rabid, pro-Corporate GOP, with their steel-toed "roach killer"- tipped cowboy boots.
or
2. You can have your crotch kicked 24/7 by the feckless, soft-spoken, pro-Corporate Democrats, with their loafers.

No option 3, but if you choose option 2, you get option 1 automatically, as a value-added bonus.

Choose wisely every election year!

My faith that the Dems were telling the truth for the past eight years, that they were just "keeping the powder dry for their big chance" gave out back in July.

Now, I am just sad realizing just how on our own we, down here, really are.

Dr. Kelly's Records Sealed For 70 years...

This is a very disturbing twist in an even more disturbing pre-Iraq War case. Looks like Lord Hutton has effectively covered-up what is looking more and more like a State-sponsored murder to silence dissent.

via Larisa Alexandrovna

"Evidence relating to the death of Government weapons inspector David Kelly is to be kept secret for 70 years, it has been reported.

A highly unusual ruling by Lord Hutton, who chaired the inquiry into Dr Kelly's death, means medical records including the post-mortem report will remain classified until after all those with a direct interest in the case are dead, the Mail on Sunday reported.

And a 30-year secrecy order has been placed on written records provided to Lord Hutton's inquiry which were not produced in evidence.

The Ministry of Justice said decisions on the evidence were a matter for Lord Hutton. But Liberal Democrat MP Norman Baker, who has conducted his own investigations into Dr Kelly's death, described the order as "astonishing".

Dr Kelly's body was found in woods close to his Oxfordshire home in 2003, shortly after it was revealed that he was the source of a BBC report casting doubt on the Government's claim that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction capable of being fired within 45 minutes.

An inquest was suspended by then Lord Chancellor Lord Falconer, who ruled that Lord Hutton's inquiry could take its place. But in the event, the inquiry focused more on the question of how the BBC report came to be broadcast than on the medical explanation for Dr Kelly's death."

No credible expert believes that Kelly killed himself. Yet Lord Hutton continues to not only force the suicide claims down the throats of the medical experts who examined Kelly's body and of the British public, he has also now sealed all of the records. If Kelly killed himself, then why are the medical records being sealed?

The question remains: just how far were the Blair/Bush administrations willing to go in order to fabricate a reason for the Iraq war? The Bush administration was at the very least willing to out a covert CIA officer, committing treason in the process. What was Tony Blair willing to do?

This week has been a non-stop assault on the Rule of Law. Sad. I'm glad that gardening season is coming on, as I really am at a point where I don't like looking at current events anymore.
