Of course, I'm reading this article just as the Twitter informs me that the NYPD is at Liberty Park, trying to take down Occupy Wall Street's medical tent while the Rev. Jesse Jackson tries to stop them. The occupiers are chanting: "Who do you serve? Who do you protect"? Good question!

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, speaking Monday as Occupy Wall Street protesters celebrated the passage of a month encamped in Zuccotti Park, said he was trying to strike a balance between protecting protesters’ right to free speech and the needs of Lower Manhattan residents.

“The Constitution doesn’t protect tents,” he said at a news conference in Queens. “It protects speech and assembly.”

Hmm. I wonder if it protects umbrellas? Which are, after all, a lot like small, short tents without bottoms.

The mayor expressed concern that those exercising a “right to be silent” might be getting drowned out amid the din of the protests.

“We can’t have a place where only one point of view is allowed,” he said. “There are places where I think it’s appropriate to express yourself, and there are other places that are appropriate to set up Tent City. They don’t necessarily have to be one and the same.”

Might I suggest Pier 57? Or did the class action settlement make you promise not to do that again?

Good idea, Michael. Try being silent yourself instead of speaking up and proving yourself to be a tool for the fascists.

You're wrong and you know it. Quit trying to take them down. You lost. Quit and take a lobbying job. That's what your kind do best. You don't know shit about the BOR. You're one of the 1%.

The mask of civilization is coming off Michael Bloomberg. The face beneath the mask is as ugly as the sin of unbridled greed.

I might be wrong but the wingnuts think Bloomberg is secretly one of them, a, gasp, communist. Of course it's all nonsense.

Bloomberg is still looking for sneaky ways to make them go away - sneaky ways to 'end it', instead of facing the problems that they are bringing to light.

Bloomberg, like all politicians, is going to have to face these issues and help us solve them, and stop looking for ways to make the people go away. They don't want to be there, but until you become the 'change we are looking for', we have to be the change we are looking for.

That's how you end it Mr. Michael Rubens Bloomberg - face the issues they are raising and help us solve them. It's the only way.

I think his plan to 'end it', as you say, is to foment violence so the NYPD can go hog wild on the Occupiers. Then they can bring is the riot gear and start cracking skulls.

I think you are right, Edwin.
He had to back down when the protesters cleaned up their occupied area, giving him no reason to shut them down...plus he, apparently, got lots of phone calls from citizens telling him to back off.
He's probably not too happy about not getting his way so far & is just waiting for a tiny opportunity.
I also worry about interlopers stirring it up with the police, while masquerading as part of the protest.

Trantorian's picture

He'll find some pretext (incident) to make the protest appear violent and move before anyone has a chance to prove him wrong.

And a salute to Jesse Jackson who's slipped into irrelvance (many years ago) - I hope you can add another positive voice to the 99%.

Hey, it's after 3:00 am, where are you guys posting from? I can't believe I'm still working - another hour to go.

We'll have no goddamn free commie socialist health care facility here in NYC! These bums must pay their health insurance premiums and then be denied treatment when they need it most. That’s the American Way. After all, they’ve only got themselves to blame if they aren’t greedy, unscrupulous, and rich enough to afford Cadillac care. DFHs!

"Are there no prisons?" asked Scrooge.

"Plenty of prisons," said the gentleman, laying down the pen again.

"And the Union workhouses?" demanded Scrooge. "Are they still in operation?"

"They are. Still," returned the gentleman, "I wish I could say they were not."

"The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour, then?" said Scrooge.

"Both very busy, sir."

"Oh! I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course," said Scrooge. "I'm very glad to hear it."

"Many can't go there; and many would rather die."...

..."If they would rather die," said Scrooge, "they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population. "...

And as for the 'code talk'? Trying to resurrect Nixon's 'Silent Majority'? Give it up, Bloomberg. That group, what's left of it, is starting to realize what the Rethug agenda means, namely, no 'entitlements' means no life support for them. The ones who still have their marbles, who haven't had their brains turned to mush by the Right Wing Noise Machine, have found their voices...and they are being heard in our camp.

The police are tainting themselves; ot will take a generationor more for them to live this down. they are going to have a near impossible job convincing the People that they wear a uniform in order to protect and serve.

Bloomberg: "We can’t have a place where only one point of view is allowed..."

Until you can demonstrate that anyone's point of view is being suppressed, this is nonsensical. And the right to be silent is included in that. Too bad Bloomberg doesn't exercise that right more often? Perhaps it would behoove him to do so, so he doesn't "remove all doubt", huh?

Unless he's suggesting that we need to mandate all places have a diversity of opinion?
