Rooney Mara talks ‘Dragon Tattoo’ transformation in Vogue

Rooney Mara.
(Vogue.)
Rooney Mara and David Fincher make the case for the actress’s Lisbeth Salander in a new interview with Vogue.
Mara doesn’t seem to be fazed by all of the physical changes she had to undergo for her “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”role, including chopping off her hair and piercing her nose, lip, eyebrow and some other not-so-visible body parts. She told Vogue she was most shocked by her bleached eyebrows. “But I was fine because I knew it was going to be really helpful for getting into character.”
The slim 20-something actress also had to lose weight to play Salander. When asked by Jonathan Van Meter if the process has been unhealthy, Fincher is quick to point out that “it hasn’t been too hard for her.”
Mara even seems to revel in the film’s nudity. After Fincher receives a call that a movie poster featuring a topless Mara has leaked, she tells the magazine while smiling: “In this poster, I’m looking dead into the camera with no expression on my face. . . . I think it freaks a lot of people out.”
It seems that nudity played some role in the casting process. Fincher explained that it was part of the reason why Scarlett Johansson was passed over: “It was a great audition, I’m telling you. But the thing with Scarlett is, you can’t wait for her to take her clothes off.”
In light of Operation Hackerazzi, it seems Fincher was on to something.

The Scream Awards: A series of ridiculous photos
GALLERY: Click the image for more pictures from the Scream Awards. The Scream Awards — an annual October event hosted by Spike TV that honors great achievements in horror, sci-fi and fantasy entertainment while also giving stars another platform from which to shill upcoming projects — is a purposely weird affair.
And its intentional weirdness — which can be seen during Spike’s Tuesday broadcast of the ceremony — naturally makes for some bizarre after-the-fact photos.
In that spirit, here are nine more particularly freaky pics from Saturday’s event in L.A., photos that probably have a rational explanation behind them but are more humorous with ridiculous captions attached. (View even more photos via the gallery above.)
Have other caption suggestions? Share them in the comments. You know, because that whole soliciting-of-captions-via-comments thing went super well on this Kirk Cameron post.

Susan Sarandon calls Pope Benedict a Nazi

Susan Sarandon committed one of the biggest no-nos in the celebrity world over the weekend: calling someone a Nazi.
That someone happened to be Pope Benedict XVI.
The comment was made during a Hamptons International Film Festival interview Saturday with actor Bob Balaban. Sarandon was discussing her 1995 film, “Dead Man Walking,” Newsday reports, and said she sent the pope a copy of the book it was based on.
“The last one,” she continued, referring to Pope John Paul II. “Not this Nazi one we have now.”
Balaban reportedly discouraged the remark, which Sarandon then repeated.
Newsday reports that the comment was “somewhat offhanded.” And the German pope does have a murky past involving the Hitler Youth. But if the gaggle of celebs who have invoked Hitler’s name have taught us anything, it’s that comparing anyone to a Nazi is usually a bad idea. Unless you’re Kanye West.

Ellen Barkin vs. Samuel L. Jackson: Who has the filthier Twitter feed?

Samuel L. Jackson, distinguished tweeter.
(Andy Kropa - GETTY IMAGES)
During the past week, Ellen Barkin and Samuel L. Jackson have both become avid users of Twitter. And while it might not initially seem that these two actors have much in common, even though they both appeared in the 1989 thriller “Sea of Love,” it turns out that both have an abiding love for tweeting profanities.
But whose Twitter mouth is filthier: the star of “The Big Easy” or the man who carried a wallet in “Pulp Fiction” that said Bad Mother [Expletive]? The answer may surprise you.
Note: the tweets that follow will be filled with bleeped-out words. But trust us when we say that both Barkin and Jackson are true pioneers in the field of spelling the f-word in as many different ways as possible.

Lindsay Lohan denies reports of probation violations

Lindsay Lohan may be facing more than a year in jail for violating her probation, if TMZ is to be believed.
The actress is due in court Wednesday for a routine probation hearing, where TMZ says she will be grilled by a judge for not meeting her community service and therapy requirements.
The site claimed that Lohan was dismissed from the Downtown Women’s Center after missing her court-appointed community service there nine times and not staying the full time when she did show up.
Lohan’s rep did confirm to E! that she is now serving her time at the Red Cross, but would not say why. She’s also been accused of not attending her mandated meetings with a therapist.
When Lohan last appeared in front of Judge Stephanie Sautner in July, the 25-year-old was told to enroll in counseling and continue working to reach the 480 hours of community service she must finish by the end of this year.
Lohan took to Twitter to deny reports that she’s been anything but a model parolee.
“I am not to be made an example of anymore. I am working hard and fulfilling my obligations every single day, to the court as well as myself,” the actress tweeted Friday. “If I travel, [it’s] for work and [it has] been approved. As is anything I do when I leave the state. I’d appreciate it if people will just let me do what is asked of me, so that I can get my life back.
“Please ignore the reports which have no truth to them. Thank you.”

Beyonce’s “Love On Top” and New Edition’s “If It Isn’t Love.”
(Beyonce Vevo; New Edition Vevo)
Beyonce fronts her own boy band in the video for “Love On Top,” the “4” track the pregnant singer used to reveal her baby bump at the MTV VMAs.
Backed by five gentleman, the leotard-sporting diva works a microphone as she does some fancy footwork. This being a Beyonce video, there are a few costume changes, each set to the song’s final chord progressions to the heavens.
The video is an obvious homage to New Edition’s “If It Isn’t Love.” What’s not clear is whether anyone in Bey’s camp contacted the band to let them know about the inspiration. Here we go again?

Actress Ashley Judd said she is “devastated” by the death of 33-year-old race car driver Dan Wheldon.
Judd, the wife of fellow driver Dario Franchitti, was present at the Izod IndyCar Series season finale Sunday when Wheldon was involved in a multi-car crash. Judd said Franchitti first met Wheldon when the late driver was 6 years old.
“As we continue to absorb Dan’s accident — we forget, remember, [re-experience] shock, denial, anger, pain — I'm reminded of a favorite poem,” the actress tweeted, sharing the text of John Donne’s “Death Be Not Proud.”
Judd also expressed her heartbreak for Wheldon’s wife, Susie, and their two small children.
Other celebs, including Smashing Pumpkin Billy Corgan and ESPN’s Erin Andrews, expressed their sympathy on Twitter.

Robert Downey Jr. asks world to forgive Mel Gibson

Robert Downey Jr., left, accepts the 25th American Cinematheque Award from presenter Mel Gibson during a benefit gala.
(Chris Pizzello - AP)
When Robert Downey Jr. accepted the American Cinematheque award over the weekend, he chose his friend Mel Gibson to present the honor. Then, to some surprise, Downey gave the gift of public acceptance to the embattled actor.
“I urge you to forgive my friend his trespasses,” Downey told the audience, according to The Wrap. “Allow him to pursue this art without shame.”
Gibson has gone from Hollywood A-lister to pariah, as he’s faced accusations of anti-Semitism, racism and spousal abuse.
“Unless you are without sin — and if you are, you are in the wrong [expletive] industry — you should forgive him and let him work again,” Downey said via E!.
The defense was a return of kindness for Downey. Gibson gave “The Avengers” actor a job in 2003’s “The Singing Detective” after his drug arrests made him uninsurable.
“I asked Mel to present this award for me for a reason,” Downey said, according to Entertainment Weekly. “When I couldn’t get sober, he told me not to give up hope and encouraged me to find my faith. It didn’t have to be his or anyone else’s as long as it was rooted in forgiveness. ... He kept a roof over my head and food on the table and most importantly he said if I accepted responsibility for my wrongdoing and embraced that part of my soul that was ugly — hugging the cactus he calls it — he said that if I hugged the cactus long enough, I’d become a man.”
