Former US vice president turned climate-change activist Al Gore threw his support behind Occupy Wall Street on Thursday, calling it a first step towards fixing a democracy in crisis.

“From the economy to the climate crisis, our leaders have pursued solutions that are not solving our problems. Instead they propose policies that accomplish little,” he wrote on his blog (blog.algore.com).

(AFP) – ‘Indignant’ protests to sweep across world

“Indignant” activists, angered by a biting economic crisis they blame on politicians and bankers, vow to take to the streets worldwide on Saturday in a protest spanning 71 nations.

It is the first global show of power by the movement, born May 15 when a rally in Madrid’s central square of Puerta del Sol sparked a protest that spread nationwide, then to other countries.

As governments cut deep into welfare spending to try to trim huge sovereign debts, the protests have grown and this weekend’s demonstrations are being organised in Madrid, New York and around the world.

(TaiwanNews) – Wall Street standoff delayed as park cleaning postponed

Protesters, who have occupied the publicly accessible park since mid-September, feared the cleaning would be an attempt to shut down the movement that has sparked solidarity protests in more than 1,400 cities and plans for global rallies on Saturday in 71 countries, according to Occupy Together and United for Global Change.

Americans who support or engage in acts of terror against the United States should have their citizenship revoked, said a group of lawmakers who on Thursday introduced legislation to that effect.

The bill submitted to both chambers of Congress by hawkish independent Senator Joe Lieberman, Republican Senator Scott Brown and Republican congressmen Charlie Dent and Jason Altmire come fresh on the heels of the killing of US-born radical cleric and Al-Qaeda militant Anwar al-Awlaqi in Yemen by a suspected CIA drone.

That killing was authorized by US authorities in a secret document, drawing fire from civil rights advocates who argued it permitted the execution of a US citizen without due legal process.

Saudi Arabia has issued a menacing ­warning to Iran that it will have to pay a price for the alleged plot to hire a Mexican drug cartel to assassinate its ambassador in Washington.

The threat from the Saudis came as the Obama administration described the alleged plot as a “dangerous escalation” in the region.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said “clearly the plotting happened at senior levels of the Quds force [Iranian special forces]” but the administration resisted calls from within the US, mainly from the conservative right, to retaliate against Iran with military action.
