Earlier this month I did a post asking How Widespread Is The Current XBLA Account Hijacking Issue?. Other news sites have finally picked up on it, thus making me look slightly less crazy. As a result, I can now continue my rant!
Quick recap -- around the end of September a great number of Xbox LIVE Arcade users began reporting various forms of unauthorized usage of their accounts. Most involved the purchase of thousands of MS Points which were then used to buy FIFA 12. In addition, many accounts found added charges for Gold Premium Packs and DLC, along with three FIFA 12 achievements unlocked. In some cases, passwords and Gamertags were changed. Worse yet, some had even reported having their account stolen and sold out from under them.
On October 5th I emailed MS for a statement regarding an issue that I felt to be widespread, and received the following response:
“We do not have any evidence the Xbox LIVE service has been compromised. We take the security of our service seriously and work on an ongoing basis to improve it against evolving threats. However, a limited number of members have contacted us regarding unauthorized access to their accounts by outside individuals. We are working with our impacted members directly to resolve any unauthorized changes to their accounts. As always, we highly recommend our members follow the Xbox LIVE Account Security guidance provided at www.xbox.com/security to protect your account.”
I'm one of those "limited number of members". Limited to what? Limited to hundreds? Thousands? Tens of thousands? The vocal minority has already made it quite clear that a problem exists. Imagine how many XBLA hijacked customers haven't posted on forums or news site.
XBLA support's solution to the issue was to lock accounts for "investigation". Unfortunately, once you go down that road it's hard to come back. About a week ago I had an interesting chat with an XBLA support rep. I explained that I was willing to eat the charges made on my account, because at this point I just wanted my account back. Sounds simple enough, right? Unfreeze my account and forget any of this happened. Her response:
"We can't unfreeze your account because we can't prove that you are you. The person who fraudulently used your account had access to all of your information. You could be that person just pretending to be you."
She suggested that I make a new account. Not acceptable. I plan to give them another call later today. Perhaps I'll record it for shits 'n giggles.

Also, in case you didn’t know, Dawn of War 2: Retribution is free to play over this weekend on Steam. It’s also on sale for $15. Trust me when I say it’s well worth it at that price. The other DLCs in the works are the Imperial Guard Death Korps of Krieg and the Chaos Word Bearers multiplayer chapter packs.

There's also word of a 24-hour Dota 2 live stream for charity which is just about to begin. Taylor "Yatterman" Caines is about an hour away from playing Dota 2 for 24-hours straight for the Extra Life 2011 charity gaming marathon, which sends 100% of proceeds from donations to the Children's Miracles Network.
Caines has six Dota 2 beta keys to give away during the 24-hour window, one for the top donator (currently $200), one for a random donor of $5 or more, and four for random users watching the stream. You can watch the entire thing live starting at 6AM PST / 9AM EST at Yatterman's LiveStream, but if you want a chance at a random key make sure to register for an account on Livestream.com while you watch.
The official site has just been updated for your giganto-scrolling pleasure. Street Fighter is the only fighting game I've ever taken seriously, but maybe Tekken can slyly sneak in on its coattails. Apparently the epic story begins with a mysterious box.
Bowling has always been something of an ordeal for me, mainly due to the fact that I'm not very good at it. Every time I roll a bowling ball down an alley, it inexplicably curves to the left. It has an impressive curl on it that might be mistaken for skill by a random passer-by - people occasionally even commend me on it - but I don't understand how it's manufactured. It means that any vertical pins that remain, alone and to the right, can taunt me freely. A bowling ball that initially seems to be headed directly for their snide little pin-faces impotently spins away a few feet from making contact, and I am shamed.
It's especially demeaning when another member of the bowling party is zipping into the lead at strike-laden lightspeed. After three consecutive strikes, I became convinced that my friend had some kind of a hack. Real life had transformed into Wii bowling, where that very specific upward flick sends every ball careening to a perfectly straight and perfectly centred strike. I confronted him on the issue and he denied it. Needless to say, he won't be around for much longer.
I should have just stayed in the arcade. They have that Big Buck Hunter game. It gives you a chance to shoot deer for the casual effrontery that their very existence provides. Next time I'll kill all those bastard deer with the respectable enthusiasm portrayed in this weekend's video. Nobody likes bowling, everybody loves light guns.
The best 3D technology for the PC just got better with the introduction of new NVIDIA®3D Vision™ products, which deliver greater realism and immersion than ever for 3D games, movies and photos.3D Vision 2's wireless and wired glasses have a sleek new design, and 20% larger lenses, without any increase in price from the previous generation kits. Additionally, as mentioned in the quote above, NVIDIA LightBoost ready 120hz panels will allow for better environment lighting while the 3D effect is active. This will help those who didn't like the whole "really dark sunglasses" effect that the shuttering had in the first generation glasses and displays.NVIDIA 3D Vision 2, the next generation of NVIDIA’s award-winning 3D technology, features sleek, newly-redesigned, gamer-inspired glasses. It also introduces NVIDIA 3D LightBoost™ technology, a unique new display technology that dramatically improves the 3D experience by delivering images that are up to twice as bright and colors that are far richer than those provided by other 3D display technologies.
These features give gamers the ultimate 3D platform for this fall’s hot new titles, including Batman: Arkham City, LA Noire and more. In addition, through the NVIDIA 3D Vision Ready ecosystem, NVIDIA is delivering the industry’s broadest selection of high-quality 3D content and supported displays.
It's worth mentioning that 3D Vision 2 glasses are backwards compatible with previous generation displays, and first generation 3D Vision glasses can be used with newer LightBoost LCD panels without a problem. The main difference is obviously going to be the smaller size of the first generation lenses, and the lack of LightBoost.
The 27" ASUS VG278H 3D Vision 2 LightBoost-Ready LED LCD is already available on the market, and comes bundled with a set of 3D Vision 2 wireless glasses. The VG278H even has a wireless transmitter built into the panel frame, so there's no need for an external module to sync with the glasses.
I'm personally really digging the new design of the glasses, it's definitely an improvement. We're hoping to get some hands-on coverage of 3D Vision 2 of our own done in the very near future. You can pick up a 3D Vision 2 kit of your own right now (sans 120hz display) for $99.99 in wired form, or $149.99 for wireless.

Time will tell if The Repopulation is going to be one of those diamonds in the rough.
Have any of you played Nuclear Dawn? What are your thoughts on it so far?
I liked Marv’s comic book work, particularly The Tomb of Dracula. Additionally, I think that his name is awesome. However, I don’t understand the need to give a context as to why the guys in PlanetSide are fighting. That’s just what happens in Planetside. It’s like trying to give context to why the sun comes up in morning and goes down at night. Okay, I guess you could come up with a convoluted religion, complete with human sacrifices, to explain that one. If Mr. Wolfman’s work takes PlanetSide 2 in that direction, then I suppose I’m all for it.
During the 10-day camp, Shoesmith experienced a robbery on the store and a belly dancer from Scotland, and it wasn't until day 9 that he was actually joined by another would-be consumer.
So, the first thing the guy did was make friends with the Apple store employees, good idea since he would surely need to use the facilities over the course of the camp. A bit depressed at the news that the iPhone 5 would instead be iPhone 4S, Shoesmith was at least slightly comforted thanks to food deliveries from Domino's and Le Petit, among others. Other stuff scored along the way... A trip to Dubai from Direct Flights, $32,600 Chevrolet, a couple of grand worth of outdoor gear and a bunch of other bits 'n bobs. Not bad for nine days of lazing around outside.
He did want a butler, a photographer and a security guard, but I'm not sure he got those in the end.
So, JForce: Unstoppable is a top-down shooter. And if you watch the video below you may find that the hero looks like a deformed sperm, then transforms into a set of boobs, but ultimately you will see that it is actually a man. A man who needs your help. If you want to help Kickstart this game then you can pre-order over the next 30 days to receive discounts and beta access.

Hey, I bet you've never heard this one before (if you don't count last month and the month before that)... yesterday my dog was taking a poop and when he was done he started bouncing around like a nut. Turned out there was still a log stuck in the old poop chute. So yeah, I had to pull it out. Then we went home and had some bacon. According to Dr. Oz, I'm anemic, so I need to really slam back the bacon from here on in.
Speaking of bacon, have a bacon-cheeseburger on the house! If you look closely you can see the boar's wiener.

What are your weekend plans?
