New FTAs Will Promote Growth and Jobs

Both the House and Senate on Wednesday approved Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with Colombia, Panama, and South Korea. The passing of the FTAs coincided with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak's arrival in the United States on a visit aimed at promoting bilateral relations. Comments Cato scholar Daniel Griswold, "Based on the record [of other recent FTAs], we can expect the agreements with Korea, Colombia, and Panama to promote both U.S. imports and exports for the benefit of U.S. manufacturing, agriculture, and the overall U.S. economy."

Cutting the Federal Budget Line by Line

Republican policymakers have been doing a lot of talking lately about the need to cut spending, reduce deficits, and rein in our national debt. Unfortunately, there are only a few Republicans who have put the effort into creating detailed proposals for what agencies and programs they would terminate. In the interest of pushing the discussion forward, we at the Cato Institute have done our own page by page, line by line review of the federal budget. As the 2012 presidential campaign season continues to heat up, it is our hope that Republicans do not join their Democratic colleagues in taking the easy way out by pledging to simply "eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse" in government programs.

Afghanistan: 10 Years and No End in Sight

When President Bush announced the commencement of military operations in Afghanistan on October 7, 2001, the campaign was seen as a clearly justified response to the horrific attacks of 9/11. Few Americans then could have imagined that there would be nearly 100,000 U.S. troops on the ground in Afghanistan 10 years later. And despite the fact that combat forces are scheduled to withdraw by 2014, military and civilian planners in Washington have made it clear they never intend to completely abandon Afghanistan. Cato scholar Christopher Preble puts it simply: "It is time to end the open-ended nation-building mission in Afghanistan, and to bring our troops home."
