Memphis, Tn - With 1,300 Facebook followers and up to 100 people turning out for the group's first meeting Monday, 'Occupy Memphis' is gaining ground.
"There's a vast inequality that has developed," said Jacob Flowers with 'Occupy Memphis.'
Mimicking the feelings of the 'Occupy Wall Street" protest which is now in its third week, this local group is pushing for financial equality.
"There's obviously an imbalance in this country between that of the 1 percent of America that controls 50 percent of the wealth and the 99 percent of us left to really scrapple between us over the remaining 50 percent," Flowers said.
The movements rising up against corporate greed, bailouts, and unemployment are spreading across the country. Protesters have popped up in at least a dozen cities like Los Angeles and Boston. In Memphis, the leaderless group is still in the planning stages.
A time and date for a demonstration has not yet been set. But three possible places it could be held include Poplar and Ridgeway out East, Civic Center Plaza and The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, downtown.
'Occupy Memphis' meets against Wednesday evening from 6 to 8pm at the Overton Park pavilion off East Parkway.
