DICE Opens 64-Player Caspian Border Map in Battlefield 3 Multiplayer Beta

By Mike Sharkey | PC News | Oct 7, 2011 11:00 AM | Comment

With its relatively small Operation Metro map and lack of vehicles, the ongoing Battlefield 3 multiplayer beta doesn't quite feel like Battlefield. That all changes this afternoon. DICE has announced the massive 64-player, jet-filled Caspian Border map is now open to all PC beta testers. Read More »

A Game of Thrones: Genesis Review

By Nathan Grayson | PC Reviews | Oct 7, 2011 8:54 AM | Comment

Epic clashes. Wars of words and regular old wars. Characters you love to hate and hate to love. Sean Bean. A Game of Thrones: Genesis has precisely none of these things. That alone isn't necessarily a damning statement, however. After all, a licensed game that relies solely on the strengths of its beloved namesake is bound to fall flat. Genesis, though, proves that the opposite approach can be just as precarious. This one's got some brains, sure, but about as much heart as the Tin Man. And even if the game had all the charm of Prince Joffrey... getting punched in his stupid face, it'd still be lacking in one very key area: fun. Read More »

Dispatches From the Frontlines of Battlefield 3's New Co-Op Mode

By Mike Nelson | PC Previews | Oct 7, 2011 7:59 AM | Comment

Battlefield 3's co-op feature may hold some of the most intense experiences to come out of this year's anticipated first-person shooter. Yes the tech is wonderful. Yes the 64-player Conquest maps are freakin' amazing. But the co-op portion -- designed as a companion to the single-player campaign, not a direct recreation -- is secretly one of the best parts of the game. Read More »

Rage PC Review

By Bennett Ring | PC Reviews | Oct 6, 2011 10:20 PM | Comment

With John Carmack devoting a large chunk of his cybernetically enhanced brain to the art of building rockets instead of crafting rocket jumping simulators, we've been decidedly cautious about the upcoming Rage and its reliance upon id Tech 5. Id games are known first and foremost for their technological prowess, so has Rage suffered from Mr Carmack's obsession with sending passengers into orbit? More importantly, has id finally rediscovered how to create truly great game experiences, rather than excellent tech demos for their licensed engines? Read our Rage PC review to find out. Despite being over a decade old, Max Payne can still teach today's shooters a thing or two about the satisfying crunch of shotgun pellet on bone. With information about the third in the series harder to find than an untouched bottle of whisky in Max's office, we jumped at the opportunity to get some face time with his third outing. Read on to see what Rockstar showed us during a recent Max Payne 3 demonstration. Read More »

Need for Speed: The Run Impressions

By Mike Sharkey | PC Previews | Oct 6, 2011 12:29 PM | Comment

Need for Speed: The QTE was one of the names pinned on Need for Speed: The Run after Electronic Arts brought a disjointed, outside your vehicle, quick-time-event-filled demo of the game to E3 in June. I'm speaking for the vast majority of attendees who played the demo when I say, "Wow, that sucked." Fast forward four months to EA's Vegas Showcase last week, and it's as if Need for Speed: The QTE never existed. After going hands-on with the racer at the event, I'm happy to report EA has abandoned its misguided quick-time aspirations and returned its focus to the elements that make the Need for Speed franchise great. By Mike Sharkey | PC News | Oct 6, 2011 8:25 AM | Comment

Along with the various graphical glitches in the PC version of id Software's Rage, many gamers are noticing the Mega-Textured, id Tech 5 engine powered environments aren't as stunningly detailed as they were made out to be. Turns out it takes some tweaking to unlock Rage's high-resolution textures, and our friends at GeForce provide a step-by-step breakdown on how it can be done. Read More »

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Impressions

By Mike Sharkey | PC Previews | Oct 5, 2011 1:27 PM | Comment

"Go big or go home" is a phrase typically used by professional athletes, and I imagine former MLB pitcher Curt Schilling has used it often during the development of 38 Studios' debut title, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. Schilling's start-up studio and its subsidiary, Big Huge Games, are throwing everything and the kitchen sink into Reckoning, and the result is a unique game with RPG elements as deep as The Elder Scrolls and combat as electrifying as The God of War.
