You've probably heard of the story behind this one already – it was originally envisioned as "Maximillian and the Rise of the Mutant Mudds" for the DS, where it would have been a 3D third-person shooter starring a kid fighting mud monsters with a super-powered water gun. Its retail dreams faded away at some point, so the developers began toying with the idea of a digital release through DSiWare. That version of the project fizzled, too, though. So things weren't looking too great for the Mudds.
But the arrival of Nintendo's newest portable revived development – and completely reinvented it. The now more shortly-titled Mutant Mudds has become a 2D sprite-based platformer that takes some cues from Nintendo's classic Virtual Boy Wario Land. As Max runs left and right fighting mud monsters and collecting items, he'll occasionally come to points in the environment that let him jump way back into the background. Or forward into the foreground, too, giving you three different parallel planes of gameplay.
It's a snazzy idea that we haven't yet seen used in a 3DS title, and it fits perfectly with the abilities of the system's stereoscopic display.
I've yet to go hands-on with Mutant Mudds myself, as I sadly never managed to locate creator Jools Watsham and his playable demo amidst the sea of attendees at this year's E3. Everyone who did achieve that feat and played it, though, praised the heck out of it. And I won't have to wait too much longer – it's promised for release before the end of 2011.
