Hell and Back #677[ Comment ] 5:19 PST | Pappy-R | Print News | Category: Community NewsMy big project today is a big bird. Mrs. Pappy and I have been wanting some turkey of late and today is the day we decided to have one, which has me up early to get the big bastard ready for his day in the oven as well as make my dressing and cranberry sauce. We had one helluva time finding fresh cranberries this time of year as well, and I never knew you couldn't get them year round, so we'll have to do with frozen ones. I'm still tempted to do the turkey on my smoker, but it would take so long and I think I'd be better off starting my poultry-smoking career with chickens rather than a 20-pound turkey.
On the topic of Planet DOOM, does anyone have any ideas for a new Poll? I'm going to be posting a new one soon, so if you have ideas for today, or future Polls, just give me a shout!

Hell and Back #676[ Comment ] 5:50 PST | Pappy-R | Print News | Category: Community NewsGood morning Planet DOOM! Im back in the saddle and youll see this post return to six mornings a week, just like before. Due to missing time because of my health, I was pulled off of VE and have since quit the other contracts I had, which means Im now retired from gaming news and various other Internet projects. The reason I still do Planet Quake and Planet DOOM is because theyre hobby sites now, and I love them. I love the games, the community and being involved with both on such a personal level. Im still looking for things to fill my time, but I have to admit that its very nice not having to push myself to maintain a heavy schedule. So now its all about my love of gaming, and thats a very good thing. Now bring on DOOM 4 baby!

Darkmod Contest Results[ Comment ] 21:15 PST | TheHappyFriar | Print News | Category: Doom 3The Darkmod crew has released their long awaited 2011 Seasons Contest winners!
This was a contest to make a Darkmod mission that was situated in one of the four seasons. No, not the hotel; fall, winter, spring and summer.
Congratulations to BikerDude as the first place winner! All the maps look impressive though so be sure to download them if you already haven't. The team is also interested in your feedback on their forums so leave them some!
Pap-Attack![ Comment ] 7:03 PST | Pappy-R | Print News | Category: Community NewsHowdy fraggerz! This is just a quick note to say that I'm back in a more active role here on Planet DOOM and Planet Quake, and while I'll go into it more in the near future, all you need to know right now is that the sites will go back to a more 'live' state.
I'd like to thank The Happy Friar for his help in covering news while I worked on other things, and he won't be leaving, we'll now have two News Editors for better coverage. Kool huh?
On a related note, the "Morning Gas" and "Hell and Back" posts will return this week.

ScoreDoom Update Released[ Comment ] 16:57 PST | TheHappyFriar | Print News | Category: Classic DoomScoreDoom, built with the gzdoom and SkullTag engines (ScoreDoom and ScoredoomST respectively), has released a new bug fix and major feature update. The newest update adds a game mode called Pistol Start mode which resets the players stats and weapons on each level. This was to make single level scores more respective of the player playing a level vs how well they did in the level before.
ScoreDoom adds a score system to Doom in singleplayer and all multiplayer modes.
Read the full news update on their moddb page or download the latest version right away.
Several of the team members givestheir impressions and thoughts on creating and developing this character from concept art to finished product.
This is an interesting look at the development Hexen: EoC. It's a very interesting read, check it out.
Hexen: EoC is based on the original Hexen game, being done with the blessing of Raven. This is one to check out, if you haven't already gotten the demo you can get it here. It requires Doom 3 1.31.

Dark Mod shows off Animated Grass[ 1 Comment ] 18:52 PST | TheHappyFriar | Print News | Category: Doom 3While not sounding that interesting, it is. Dark Mod 1.04 gave developers the ability to use level detail (LOD) in their maps. Team member Arcturus (Texture Artist) decided to show off this feature with animated grass. It's quite amazing this mod team has taken what is commonly thought to be a very limited engine and push it's boundaries even further. They've provided a video and a download so you can see it yourself.
Dark Mod is a mod for Doom 3 that makes it more like the Thief games. This includes stealth over stand up fighting. A must for stealth fans.

John Carmack to Doom fans: GPL Code Soon[ Comment ] 20:07 PST | TheHappyFriar | Print News | Category: Doom 3 - Community NewsFrom the looks of it JC today announced that the Doom 3 (id Tech 4) engine will go GPL after Rage's release. It was announced during the Keynote speech today. I'm not there so I don't know all the details but this is good news for id fans all over. I'm glad id releases the engines under the GPL instead of just the mod SDK like so many other companies do, and they don't ask any royalties either.
Thanks moddb.com for posting this.

Super Sweet Texture Pack Released[ Comment ] 13:37 PST | TheHappyFriar | Print News | Category: Doom 3That's not the name of it but that's what it looks like! Wulfen from Doom3World.org has uploaded enhanced & replaced textures for Doom 3. The textures work with some existing Parallax mod's as heightmaps are included for most of the textures. I don't want to waste your time reading when you can just view it below! You can download from Depositfiles.com & Megaupload. (Thanks Badb0y for the heads up)
It seems you've become the defacto character artist in all respects. Would you be happier if (for example) the character animation duties were resumed by the folks listed in the Animation Division roster? What is your preferred mode of contribution? (Note: I do see that Noiseycricket's combat animations are pending v1.07). Yes, it would certainly be nice to have more help. I never really wanted to take on rigging and animating our characters, and I don't claim to be particularly good at it, but people with the necessary skill set seem to be rare. We get animators once in a while, but they usually disappear after a few months.
I'm not sure what my preferred method of contributing is; that's a good question. I know my _least_ favourite is rigging character models. Making them is rewarding, but tracing down stray verts, fixing clipping issues and weighting shoulders so they move properly is all tremendously tedious.
I go back and forth on whether it's worth it or not. I enjoy creating things that I know people are enjoying, but when I look at the sheer number of hours I put into TDM, I can't help but think of all the other things I could be doing.

Hexen Quick Update[ Comment ] 18:24 PST | TheHappyFriar | Print News | Category: Doom 3Some small, but no less important, news from the Hexen: EoC team. They've got a new music composer who's already working & thrilled to be on the team: Mystic Realmz! He's done previous Doom 3 mod work and most recently did music for the Quake/Doom video series Arenas.
The team spent some time updating and tweaking their website too. Things are a little more organized, downloads updated, media updated, etc.
They're also looking for Level Designers, so if you're interested (and especially if you like the game Hexen) give them an e-mail, you could be what they're looking for!

Dark Mod Update(s)[ 1 Comment ] 4:11 PST | TheHappyFriar | Print News | Category: Doom 3The Dark Mod folks have been busy. Dark Mod is the Doom 3 mod that brings Thief-like abilities and situations to Doom 3. Their Lead Artist, Springheel, has released his first mission called A Score to Settle. It uses the new 1.06 features (which means you need the latest version of the mod) like allowing the AI to relight lights you extinguished.
They have also released a Mac OSX installer file. This is needed to download the mod and install all updates. Mac OSX users, make sure you have Doom 3 v1.3.1 rev A to use this.
