So much of the 'news' lately reported in the old media, and even in the blogosphere, seems to be so much distraction from some of the rather unsettling things that are happening quietly, unbeknownst to most Americans.I've alluded to this 'national service' plan which has been in the works, but few details have been publicly discussed, so there was not much to say about it except that I find it to be wrong in principle. However the Senate has just passed the bill which is called the GIVE Act.
The senate voted 74-14 in favor of the bill.
HR 1388
GIVE Act
Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act
The link above gives only a summary of the bill, and not the complete text, but I invite my readers to take a look at it.
The House version of the bill passed a few days ago, as WorldNetDaily reported, and with no less than 70 Republicans voting for it.
The House version is here.
Here is one part (among many) which is rather unnerving:
SEC. 1304. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES AND INELIGIBLE ORGANIZATIONS.
Section 125 (42 U.S.C. 12575) is amended to read as follows:
SEC. 125. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES AND INELIGIBLE ORGANIZATIONS.
(a) Prohibited Activities- A participant in an approved national service position under this subtitle may not engage in the following activities:
...(7) Engaging in religious instruction, conducting worship services, providing instruction as part of a program that includes mandatory religious instruction or worship, constructing or operating facilities devoted to religious instruction or worship, maintaining facilities primarily or inherently devoted to religious instruction or worship, or engaging in any form of religious proselytization.''
There's also a related bill here.
Somehow in light of what these measures suggest, I can't help thinking of what a certain person said some months ago:
“Barack Obama will require you to work."
"He is going to demand that you shed your cynicism. That you put down your divisions. That you come out of your isolation and that you move out of your comfort zone. That you push yourselves to be better. And that you engage."
"Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual – uninvolved, uninformed – you have to stay at the seat at the table of democracy with a man like Barack Obama not just on Tuesday but in a year from now, in four years from now, in eight years from now, you will have to be engaged.”

These plans seems disturbingly open-ended, and though it looks as if the idea is primarily to indoctrinate young people (or further indoctrinate them, more accurately), the bills even mention programs for seniors over the age of 55. If we consider the quotes in the paragraph above, it sounds as though this 'service corps' will not just be another little VISTA program or something which provides busy work for idealistic young people, but something that sounds unsettlingly compulsory as opposed to voluntary, and it looks like it is meant to touch everybody, not just a 'commiitted' few.

This is scary and outragous. What have we done?
Elm,
What have we done?
We have allowed the left to pass ever increasing welfare programs and to advance immigration so fast that we the host population are in danger.
Yes, we have allowed it through lack of concrete action.
do you think the senate will pass it as is? i heard the version that passed the house did not have mandatory, but volunteer. mandatory may come into play and it is certainly on the table.
i have also written a blog about this. i hope to post in the next couple of days.
Kris,
I don't know all the details, if you find anything out please inform me.
Until then check this link: House Passes Volunteerism Bill Critics Call Pricey, Forced Service

Well that bit about religion is Constitutionally questionable as far as I'm concerned. "Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of a religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." But then why would a congress who didn't respect the Constitution enough to engage in due diligence over the eligibility of the winning candidate limit their actions to be in accordance with the Constitution now?
[It also leaves the Boy Scouts out in the cold(Which I think is a good thing. From the standpoint of principle and character, the BSA should not be tempted to allow themselves to be put into a position where qualifying for government handouts are part of their program-ever.)]
However there is a bit more information on GIVE here:

about the Foxx and Mikulski amendments.
Kris and CMM,
Thanks both of you for providing links with more information on the topic at hand.
Nice points made CMM...
I've been pretty busy as of late so... reading those links will help get me up to speed.

House and Senate Pass Service Bill Very Similar to Hitler's Youth?

Is this the private, well-funded, civilian military Obama promised during the campaign? Brannon Howse reveals the largely unknown story of how the Obama's are taking national their radical, socialist, and anti-Christian worldview training that was birthed through their organization "Public Allies". The training will include "social justice" instruction which is code word for Communism, socialism and Marxism. Obama's friend, and self-declared Communist, Bill Ayers is now one of the leading social justice authors of textbooks being used nationally.
Much of this began years ago with the help of socialist John Dewey and William James. James wrote "The Moral Equivalent of War" in which he called for compulsory youth service that used the military model of discipline, drilling and training. While he was anti-military he knew the value of the techniques that teach military members to follow orders, work for the common good of the group, and reject individuality and self-interest for collectivism. James even acknowledges the need for some criminal cruelty to win their war on capitalism and traditional virtues.
The newly passed legislation calls for a committee to study making this youth service mandatory. The Obama/Biden website called for 50 hours of yearly volunteerism for middle school and high school. Sounds harmless enough right? Not until you realize the volunteerism is for liberal leftist, inner-city organizations that are seeking to indoctrinate young minds with the acceptance of the growth of the welfare-state by emotionally manipulating them with the need for redistribution of wealth. The war is the haves against the have nots just as Saul Alinsky called for in his book, Rules for Radicals.
The New York Times reports that this legislation will cost $5.7 billion from 2010 to 2014 and will engage 7 million in this indoctrination. The paper also reports that the majority of Republicans and Democrats voted for this legislation and Rick Warren was an "enthusiastic supporter of this effort". The legislation also forbids students that are going through this government brainwashing from “engaging in religious instruction, conducting worship services, providing instruction as part of a program that includes mandatory religious instruction or worship.”
This bill goes back to the House and then to the Senate after conference. You must demand your two U.S. Senators and your U.S. Representative vote against this bill when it comes back to them in the coming days
So, in a nutshell, this bill and the upcoming push to make participation in the program it funds mandatory, the government is saying:
The government is going to force your child to go through this indoctrination throughout middle and high school, during which time your child may not attend church, Bible studies, religious youth groups or even participate in family grace or other prayers.
That certainly appears to be restricting the free exercise of religion to me.
CMM,
Thanks for contributing even more to the topic of universal service.
A good read on the topic can be found at:
Western Front America
Thanks. It was good to see the 13th Amendment over at Western Front America. But we already have involuntary servitude for our children. It's called public school or compulsory education or socialism. The mandatory nature is also prohibited by 5th Amendment due process- must be convicted of a crime before you can be compelled into government custody. Of course it's for a good cause- education/indoctrination. Like telling your kid smoking is bad while you puff a cigarette, public school teaches socialism while giving lip service to our Constitutional form of government. Public school is unsafe because violent kids are forced to attend. All children are forced to attend under threat of police violence and incarceration. Private school is much safer and expels trouble makers. But parents see public school as a free baby sitter. Will they see the GIVE ACT as a free baby sitter in the summer time? Why do we hate our own children so much and wonder why they distrust and disrespect us?
Race violence in our schools? Apr. 10, 2006 Some observations I wrote in response to a spike in school violence which made the news without specificity. Letters to the editor and school board members defended the thugs. Of course the national servitude program would be completely peaceful and benevolent. What precedent would cause people to suspect differently?
Blair,
Thanks for the well informed contribution to the Compulsory National Service topic.
I read your blog and it's pretty straight shooting... agree with many of the points you made.
Have you ever thought about this: If we had limited our government the way it was intended most the problems in the country today would have been handled by citizens living in effected areas of certain issues.
I'd rather see a draft so that all can serve the country in uniform rather than this so called "Compulsary National Service"... It could contain time for 90 days of emergency preparedness. We have no need for a civilian force period... People come together in emergency and it's always worked fine.
