Supporters of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney are exuberant over a pair of high profile departures from the 2012 Republican presidential race.
With both Mike Huckabee and Donald Trump bowing out of consideration within the last forty-eight hours, Romney becomes the clear front-runner for the GOP presidential nomination – a sad commentary on the status of the current field of candidates.
Well, sad for everybody except Romney supporters …
Chris Slick is director of online operations for ACT! for America, a right-wing group that revels in stoking anti-Islamic passions. He’s also a rabid Romney volunteer in his spare time.
“What a GREAT week for Mitt Romney – and it’s only Monday!” Slick told FITS. “Huckabee is out, now Trump says he won’t run.”
“Today is Governor Romney’s National Call Day and we are all dialing for dollars!” Slick continued. “Today we demonstrate our ability to raise excessive and ungodly amounts of cash while other candidates are still pattering about in bumfuck, Iowa somewhere. No one can come close to what our machine can do. No one.”
Wow. Somebody cue the Darth Vader leit-motif …
Anyway Romney, who is leading in most national polls, could have been facing a disastrous week. After all, last Thursday he delivered a poorly-received health care address aimed at convincing Americans that his socialized medicine plan was good for Massachusetts while U.S. President Barack Obama’s socialized medicine plan is bad for the country.
Needless to say, that’s a delicate tap dance … particularly for a candidate who has already flip-flopped on gun control, gay rights and abortion.
Romney’s latest display of convenient ideological malleability ordinarily would have cost him in the polls – but in light of Huckabee and Trump deciding to exit the race he’s now likely to pick up some support. Also, the last time we checked nobody was discussing his health care plan.
“We aren’t overly confident,” Slick tells FITS. “We saw how that played out for us – and McCain – last time. We are cautiously optimistic. The governor is doing all the right things at all the right times.”
As die-hard Romney opponents, we loathe the prospect of him becoming the GOP nominee by default. He’s nothing but a polished political chameleon who will say anything to get elected, and his ascension to the GOP nomination would be an unmitigated disaster for Republicans (no matter how “electable” Romney may be).
Seriously … how can Republicans claim that they are serious about fighting the creeping socialism that has infected our nation’s capital if their presidential nominee provided the blueprint for one of its most notable advances?

The great thing about attending church naked is that I can scope out the next young nubile creature to add to my harem of brides.
Who said loving Jesus was so hard anyway? It wasn’t Joseph Smith I can tell you.

SNL nailed Mitt Romney (a/a/ Flip Flopney) as the villain in a Lifetime move. You know, the sleazy real estate developer who dumps the middle-age MILF protagonist he’s married to for a smokin’ hot 20-something cocktail waitress and forces the wife to move out of the palatial country club home into a shabby apartment in the bad part of town.
By Franko May 16, 2011 at 4:39 pm
Wow, Chris Slick actually said that on the record?
By Chris May 16, 2011 at 5:27 pm
Yes – I actually said that on the record. Today we raised over $10.25 Million for Governor Romney – in one day. To say the Romney camp is proud of our grassroots fundraising success is an understatement.
By Phillip May 16, 2011 at 5:47 pm
Your ignorant if you try slamming Romneys religion. What uneducated and unchristlike slander. We dont need to look at his religion, we need to look at his record. Took his state from a billion $ defecit to a 10 billion $ surplus. Thats who we need running this country. Go MITT ROMNEY!!
By lol....fundraising part deux May 16, 2011 at 6:07 pm
Romney did close to the same thing last election cycle…scoring $6.25 million in one day.
That was back in Jan. of 07….didn’t do him so much good then did it?
That being said, I’ll quote AP’s article on it today:
“LAS VEGAS (AP) — Mitt Romney wants his money to show his might.
The all-but-declared Republican presidential contender, who has kept his head low for much of the year as he collected cash, raised $10.25 million in a single day Monday after bringing together his network of wealthy donors to dial for dollars in a city with no shortage of them.”
then later in the article:
“Romney launched that bid(2008) with a phone bank fundraiser in Boston in which 400 supporters and Romney raised more than $6.5 million. But while that event was open to reporters, Romney’s camp was much more guarded this time in Las Vegas. Aides refused to allow reporters into the phone bank room”…..
Hmm….good to see the oligarchy lining up behind the new potential potentate.
By Chris May 16, 2011 at 6:57 pm
@fundraising part deux – Keep on making patty remarks. We just raised cash more on one day than your candidate will in the remainder of this entire year!

Seriously – this guy Slick works in politics and doesn’t understand how to speak on the record? I assume he is not a paid Romney guy – but this sure isnt the way to get that kind of gig. If he is anyone of signiicance then these comments will get picked up and reported elsewhere…doubtful.

An oldie, mouldie, dynastical Republican stands no chance against the $1 billion Obama/Union re-election ARMY. Only a fresh, non-political, grandfatherly, executive unifier such as Herman Cain offers any real electoral challenge to Obama.
Unfortunately for Cain, the Beltway Repubs will reject him precisely because they can’t control him.
By Paging "Patty" May 16, 2011 at 9:21 pm
Who is Patty? What is she doing in our argument?
Literacy is overrated-especially in the Romney campaign.
Btw it didn’t take long to “Google” Chris Slick and Romney to see his antics at the Greenville straw poll in 07′ as posted on Salon, but even funnier he seems good at spreading ill will as the very first Google entry is “Chris Slick: total dick” from some obscure blogger…
LOL…Slick is a human wrecking ball as far projecting campaign credibility goes….Romney better find a way to get this obsessed lunatic off the oppositions media radar and use Slick’s lunatic energy to do foot soldier work in a capacity that doesn’t include media exposure.
Then again, it’s great fodder for Sic.

These goofy Mormons believe that when you die you’ll get your very own planet to populate, using lotsa wives . . . thousands if you want.
I think Romney ought to name his planet Charisma Zero.

Let’s see a list of donor names. Politicians raise money all the time. In fact, I think Hillary has the single day record at somewhere near 40 million.
The real question is, “Where did the money come from?” Romney, Clinton, et al, likely got their bribes…er…funds from special interest groups that will expect to be paid back with our tax dollars.
If you want to see what genuine fund raising looks like, just watch Ron Paul’s supporters. They raised over a million bucks on the day of the debate. That may not sound like a big haul, but that’s a million bucks worth of relatively small donations right out of the pockets of individual grassroots supporters. That’s genuine enthusiasm for a candidate.
By Roymond May 17, 2011 at 9:49 am
I’m amazed how that the only negative thing I’m reading about Romney is his religion. If that’s his only “flaw” you people can point out what does that say about you? If he has so many “other flaws” then why does his religion continue to keep coming up instead of anything else? This is textbook religious bigotry and I can assure you Romney won’t be needing the bigot vote in 2012.
By Chris May 17, 2011 at 10:13 am
@Matt – I had the gig and don’t want the gig again. My success speaks for itself and I am happily employed. You sound a little angry at someone…

By Hmmm...you might be wrong Roymond May 17, 2011 at 12:02 pm
I think you might be wrong on Romney not needing the “bigot vote”, me thinks that almost everyone is a bigot on some level over multiple topics.
Some people like to use the word “discretion”, regardless of which word you choose if somebody doesn’t like the idea of voting for someone that believes Joseph Smith used magic gemstones to read golden plates that added more chapters to the bible how could you possibly blame them for using their discretion?(or bigotry)
I’m not voting for scientologists any time soon as I question the good judgement of those practicing such religion…and it’s likely that many “bigoted” people will use the same criterea for Romney given the host of funny things that Mormon’s beleive in-such as polygamy is some geographic areas, funny underwear, baptising the dead, no blood transfusions, etc. et al….there’s a literal cornucopia of wacky things Mormon’s believe that would make any fairly rational person scratch their head and say “If he believes in those things and practices them, do I really want him pulling the levers of power on things that could impact me greatly?”.
Given that just about the whole population of the US is “bigoted” in many ways on many topics I think the argument of Romney not needing their vote…is well…absurd.
But hey, I guess we’ll find out.

Please, Give America the breather She deserves. Giver her back her Constitution.
To feel the “change,” as professed by Mr. Obama in 2008, please join me and so many others in 2012 for Ron Paul. If you view his issues as radical, please, i beg of You to invest a little time to research exactly what is being talked about. America cannot afford more of the same.
Constitutionally, legislatively, and morally, Ron Paul has no equal. His 22 year voting record speaks for itself. The World is watching. Ron Paul for President in 2012.
Thank You

“Wacky things” as opposed to believing that the body of Jesus turns into a cracker we can all eat, that our superhero walked on water, turned cadavers into live people, had a mother who was a virgin and later returned from the dead himself as a walking, talking zombie.
My, my . . . a little selective on our idea of “wacky,” aren’t we?
By Franko May 17, 2011 at 2:02 pm
To Chris:
So you, working as an associate for a presidential candidate, spoke to a media entity and, on the record, used the term “Bumfuck, Iowa”?
Wow.
By Chris May 17, 2011 at 3:54 pm
@Franko – I am not on Governor Romney’s staff as Will duly noted – I am happily employed. Nor is FITS News a media entity, it’s a blog. And yes, my family is from Iowa – it’s the most boring state I have ever been to in my life so I stand by that comment. Spend one day up there and you will also scratch your head and wonder why POTUS candidates pander to the Hawkeye State.
By Soapboxgod May 17, 2011 at 4:01 pm
Article II Section I of the Constitution makes no litmus test for religious affiliation. Thus, it matters not if Romney is a Mormon or if Obama were truly a Muslim.
Romney’s fault lies in the fact that his whole conservative persona is a facade; a fabrication.
How a man who implemented Obamacare on a state level can credibly serve as the voice in opposition is ludicrous.
Great article in Harpers from the 2008 cycle: http://harpers.org/archive/2007/11/0081773
By Not at all Pete May 17, 2011 at 5:01 pm
@ Loser Pete: you assume I wouldn’t think your outline as wacky just because I fail to mention it? check your premise
Aside from that…it doesn’t change the fact that everyone votes with their discretion(bigoted notions)..whether they are “correct” or “incorrect”. The notion that Mitt isn’t going to need “bigoted” votes is laughable.
@ Soapboxgod: If you think that people walk into voting booths saying to themselves “I’m going to vote the same way the Constitution says which candidates are eligible” you’re living in a fantasy world.
People vote their interests…regardless of “bigoted”, Constitutional, or even morally right.
Poor Mitt has a long way to go to overcome that fact. The US population as a whole is not yet ready to elect a Mormon from my perspective-but we’ll see.
By Loser Pete May 17, 2011 at 5:31 pm
“@ Loser Pete: you assume I wouldn’t think your outline as wacky just because I fail to mention it? check your premise”
Sure, but when you state your case as categorically as you have here, i.e. “it’s likely that many ‘bigoted’ people will use the same criterea for Romney given the host of funny things that Mormon’s beleive (sic) in — such as polygamy is some geographic areas, funny underwear, baptising the dead, no blood transfusions, etc.” it’s always advisable to qualify these things in the interest of fairness, isn’t it?
By James May 17, 2011 at 6:04 pm
LOL
“Today we demonstrate our ability to raise excessive and ungodly amounts of cash while other candidates are still pattering about in bumfuck, Iowa somewhere. No one can come close to what our machine can do. No one.” – Yeah that’ll play well in Iowa.
How do you stop Romney by winning by default and supporting people who hate Muslims and want to bankrupt our country by spending our money on bridges in Afghanistan?
You vote for Ron Paul. That’s how.
By matt1985 May 17, 2011 at 6:13 pm
Mitt Romney is a snake oil salesman and he is a fascist pig who endorsed and passed the mandated healthcare of his former state. YEAH vote Mitt Romney if you want another stupid obama in office.

Obama has been controlled by Harry Reid (mormon), Orrin Hatch (momron) and Bob Bennett( mormon) all having great power in Washington.
Between the three they could block thing on both sides of the political aisle.
