The comics industry changed forever in 1992 when seven of Marvel Comics' best-selling artists left the mega-publisher to create Image Comics. Of the original seven (Erik Larsen, Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, Whilce Portacio, Marc Silvestri and Jim Valentino) only four remain as partners at Image: Larsen, McFarlane, Silvestri and Valentino. Despite having lost some of its talent and even one of its major imprints, WildStorm, Image remains the third-largest comic book publisher in the world.
Image is now divided into three separate publishing houses. Todd McFarlane Publishing handles all Spawn-related titles and includes the incredibly popular McFarlane Toys, Top Cow remains under the guiding hand of Marc Silvestri and publishes such titles as Witchblade, Tomb Raider and Battle of the Planets and Image Central is the main house which publishes a wide variety of comics. Though each house is a part of Image Comics, all three operate independent of one another.
