The Roundup

By: David Dayen Thursday August 18, 2011 5:42 am

Greetings, firebaggers, here’s what I’ve got for you! Oops, sorry for the slip, I just took a job with the New Mexico Organizing for America team.

• Will the US Supreme Court take a case on MERS’ standing to foreclose? I really don’t want them involved, in my perspective, and cannot really see how they would get involved in what is a state issue. Incidentally, this case came to SCOTUS from a homeowner’s attorney who lost his case with the state Appellate District Court in California. The state Supreme Court declined to take the case.

• Matt Taibbi has a bombshell story about the SEC engaging in a willful coverup of Wall Street crimes by destroying the preliminary evidence. I actually saw Harry Markopolos, the Bernie Madoff whistleblower, tell Bill Maher that it’s a new day at the SEC and that they’re starting to take these crimes seriously. FWIW.

• The dog that didn’t bark: Medicare spending slows after the passage of the Affordable Care Act, according to one report. Does this show that government-run health care saves money? Actually, Zeke Emanuel (not an unbiased source) says this is part of the ACA kicking in.

• Alan Blinder doesn’t think much of the Federal Reserve’s recent actions.

• The New York Times does their bit on Latino protests of Secure Communities. They get some quotes from Administration officials defending the program, none of which wrestle with the problem of non-criminals reporting crimes and getting caught up in the deportation net. There’s another task force hearing today in Chicago: I’d expect the same reaction from the Latino community.

• Forget Texas, I want to know about the farm state miracle, with significantly lower unemployment rates than the rest of the nation. A lot of it is due to public investment through biofuels and our successful agriculture industry.

Putting the ass in best asset

Republicans really are Obama’s secret weapon for re-election. Your current flavor of the month (vanilla edition) is Rick Perry. He likes threatening secession while sucking down federal money and pretending he found out Ben Bananke supplied salsa made in New York City. In the alternative he’s a noted skeptic of science, thinking they play politics.

In a way this makes sense from Perry’s point of view. As he got pretty much D’s and C’s in science, meaning the scientists were better at science than he was, which is not surprising. But he also got the same grades in political science, economics and history. So the scientists were better at that too. But hey, he’s a moronic Republican Governor from Texas, so if he somehow malaprops his way into the White House he can use Bush’s old lines about who the President is when he gets surrounded by “egg heads” and their 3.0 and better GPAs.

But he’s definitely always been a Republican who seemed destined for the top:

John Sharp, an A&M classmate and now a former state comptroller and Texas legislator, had something else to say about college-aged Perry.

“When I first saw him, I thought he looked stupid,” Sharp said in a 1989 interview with the Abilene Reporter-News

And that guy is a personal friend.

Oh well, there’s still the “Greater White Hope” that is Chris Christie, who just got his state’s credit rating knocked down another notch because of his tax cuts to AA-.

Which is far too many A-grades to get himself the nomination.

Late Night FDL: Get This, Eric Cantor Appeals to Republicans To Stop Taking Hostages

By: Bill Egnor Wednesday August 17, 2011 8:00 pm

So a member of the leadership in Washington is saying that Republicans should refrain from brinksmanship when it comes to the upcoming continuing resolution and the budget fight. That’s not that interesting, what is interesting is who said that, Majority Leader Eric Cantor!

Believe it or not but the oft confused Republican from Virginia sent around a memo laying out the reasons why the House Republicans should not engage in the same kind of economic and policy hostage taking they have been successful with for most of a year.

Unemployment is Killing People

By: Jeff Kaye Wednesday August 17, 2011 7:10 pm

When considering the effects of unemployment, and the desultory, really uncaring response of the current Democratic administration, as well as Republicans in Congress, to the human devastation of joblessness, it is important to consider the terrible emotional and psychological effects of such unemployment. Such effects are well-documented, but rarely mentioned in articles or blog postings.

Rick Perry, Porn Monger for President?

American Family Association, Perry’s partner in the recent Jesuspalooza fundamentalist rally in Houston, The Response, crusaded for years against Movie Gallery, urging boycotts beginning in 2000 and rejoicing in the chain’s closure.

Documentary on ‘Collateral Murder’ Incident Needs Your Help to Qualify for Academy Award Nomination

By: Kevin Gosztola Wednesday August 17, 2011 5:30 pm

A short documentary film, “Incident in New Baghdad,” has been earning critical praise and awards as it goes from film festival to film festival. The short tells the story of Iraq war veteran Ethan McCord, a soldier who was at the scene of the “Collateral Murder” incident uncovered by WikiLeaks over a year ago. McCord rescued children, who were injured in the 2007 Apache helicopter attack that killed two Reuters journalists along with a “good samaritan” who tried to rescue the journalists that had been fired upon.

Decreased Investment in Public Transit Forcing Higher Fees, Worse Service

By: David Dayen Wednesday August 17, 2011 4:40 pm

During a recession, demand for public transit goes up. People cannot afford cars and still need to find their away around their local communities. Smart public policy would have added funding for public transit, for a variety of reasons. First of all, it would support public transit jobs. Second, it would reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Third, making it cheaper for folks to get around both increases productivity and makes it easier for someone to take a job outside their immediate area. So there are a lot of wins here.

Rick Perry’s Texas Record Shows Value of Immigration, Consumer Protection, Government Spending

By: David Dayen Wednesday August 17, 2011 3:50 pm

I’m trying really hard to keep away from the 4,827 Rick Perry articles in the last day in the traditional media and lefty blogosphere. Rick Perry is the new shark attack story.

However, if we must look at the jobs record in Texas, we must. Kevin Drum has a decent enough rundown. I did my own version of this (I’ve been keeping myself to one Perry story a day). The story is familiar – an oil boom and population migration can explain much of the job gains in Texas, and even then, their unemployment rate is a high 8.2%, and a lot of the jobs created are low-wage.

If only Paul Krugman would STFU, I’m sure things would be just fine.
