It happened last night. As I reflect, I realize it has happened all along. Each day, in most every moment I have an opportunity to look at life and learn. Yet I become consumed with more immediate concerns. He said. She said. The system, situation, or some other entity supplants a deeper assessment. When I was in law school, one of my favorite professors denigrated the practice of criminal law as being "as dry as whole wheat toast." I've never been particularly interested in criminal cases, even the high profile ones.
Until now. Despite my best intentions, I've spent quite a bit of time this weekend watching the end of the Casey Anthony trial. I live in the same television market as the Anthony family, which means I've been inundated with information about the case for three years. The case itself has aired wall-to-wall on all four of our network affiliates. Even had I wanted to avoid it, like crabgrass in a suburban lawn, it keeps cropping up. So I've allowed myself to be sucked into the vortex this quiet holiday weekend.
As I sat Sunday afternoon listening to closing arguments, of the dysfunction in the Anthony family, Thoreau's quote kept popping into my mind.

Congressman Jay Inslee (WA-01) announced his candidacy for Governor of the State of Washington in Seattle Monday, and Your Erstwhile Reporter was present.
The candidacy was announced with a speech that focused on "process improvements" and the invocation of new technology jobs as an economic engine for job growth (and in fact the event took place at the headquarters of a company that has developed seed-derived biofuels that have been used to power military and commercial aircraft).
But that's not the part that's going to be the most interesting for the civil-rights supportive reader.
The most interesting part is that Inslee was quick to offer his support for full marriage equality in the State of Washington, should he find himself elected.
At the recent Netroots Nation, I was about to shake the hand of a certain elected official - whose tame tag had twisted around ... until someone got their first and addressed the man by a different name. That tells me that we may have ...

I haven't been that engaged in MLW that much recently, but I've thinking about Carol Dweck's research on motivation and growth, and thought I'd bounce it off you guys. If you're unfamiliar with her research, here's a video below. She's been interested in the question of what has led some students to be in a "fixed mindset," where they don't believe that effort can improve their level of intelligence, while others can embrace a "growth mindset" and are more interested in learning than looking good.
People in Medicaid ought to have access
