It Happened Last Night

by: Betsy L. Angert

Sun Jul 24, 2011 at 07:59:31 AM PDT

DnQxt450

copyright © 2011 Betsy L. Angert.  Empathy And Education; BeThink or  BeThink.org

It happened last night.  As I reflect, I realize it has happened all along.  Each day, in most every moment I have an opportunity to look at life and learn.  Yet I become consumed with more immediate concerns.  He said. She said.  The system, situation, or some other entity supplants a deeper assessment.  Years ago, I came to understand that I create my own chaos, calm, or shades of what will be.  As an Educator, I speak of this often.  My students often quote me on the subject of choices. Yet, until yesterday, I never fully grasped how true my words might be.  I am unsure why the events of the evening took me where they did. I share the story.

How many degrees of separation are there between politics and entertainment are there?

Reader-suggested SEPARATED at BIRTH - is Squiggy from "Laverne & Shirley" the missing-link between director Quentin Tarantino .....

Apparently, not enough: but for the time being, why not stop in for a look at news items outside the headlines, in the arts and sciences; foreign news that generates little notice in the US media and ....well, just plain whimsy.....

Holy crap, really?

I stopped talking to the guy after he started yelling at me for supporting my fellow Jews in Israel.

But it's been awhile, now, and apparently he has not even commented on his own blog, Docudharmafor the last six months.

It's been so long since I have considered myself as part of the progressive netroots, that I did not even realize that budhy dropped out of the fight.

On The Bus, Nightprowlkitty and I will be starting a little Wordpress blog with a spiritual, not political, focus. If you can find it, lol, you are welcome to come read and comment.

Huh.

Well, I have no ill-will toward the guy.

Fare thee well, buhdydharma.

Fare thee well.

I remember you from a time when I was still marching against the war in Iraq and when I still felt a sense of solidarity with the Left.

Days not so long gone by, really... but definitely gone.

Peace to you, please, good sir.

Why We Say Save Our Schools

by: Betsy L. Angert

I am but one who will stand strong to ensure an equal education for all.  All who do or plan to, will express themselves in various ways.  Some will March. Others will Rally or gather in Conference.  Several have, do, or expect to act locally.  Countless change what they can for children within the dynamics that define their family.  Nationwide, innumerable Americans join hands and embrace a common cause. Let us Save Our Schools.

An American Tragedy

by: puzzled

Mon Jul 04, 2011 at 06:14:39 AM PDT

( - promoted by puzzled)

Most men lead lives of quiet desperation
and go to the grave with the song still in them.

~~Henry David Thoreau~~

suburbia

When I was in law school, one of my favorite professors denigrated the practice of criminal law as being "as dry as whole wheat toast."  I've never been particularly interested in criminal cases, even the high profile ones.

Until now.  Despite my best intentions, I've spent quite a bit of time this weekend watching the end of the Casey Anthony trial. I live in the same television market as the Anthony family, which means I've been inundated with information about the case for three years.  The case itself has aired wall-to-wall on all four of our network affiliates.  Even had I wanted to avoid it, like crabgrass in a suburban lawn, it keeps cropping up.  So I've allowed myself to be sucked into the vortex this quiet holiday weekend.

As I sat Sunday afternoon listening to closing arguments, of the dysfunction in the Anthony family, Thoreau's quote kept popping into my mind.

Inslee Running For Washington Governor, Supports Full Marriage Equality

by: fake consultant

Wed Jun 29, 2011 at 04:12:52 AM PDT

( - promoted by Maryscott O'Connor)

Congressman Jay Inslee (WA-01) announced his candidacy for Governor of the State of Washington in Seattle Monday, and Your Erstwhile Reporter was present.

The candidacy was announced with a speech that focused on "process improvements" and the invocation of new technology jobs as an economic engine for job growth (and in fact the event took place at the headquarters of a company that has developed seed-derived biofuels that have been used to power military and commercial aircraft).

But that's not the part that's going to be the most interesting for the civil-rights supportive reader.

The most interesting part is that Inslee was quick to offer his support for full marriage equality in the State of Washington, should he find himself elected.

No sooner do we leave town .. then learn that even amongst members of Congress from the same state ... the crazee can take place ....

SEPARATED at BIRTH - two congresswomen from Minnesota: Betty McCollum - who was the focus of recent a legislative battle over military recruiting ......

QOTD - When can you grow?

(thanks, dknow! - promoted by puzzled)

BERJAYA Hi all,

I haven't been that engaged in MLW that much recently, but I've thinking about Carol Dweck's research on motivation and growth, and thought I'd bounce it off you guys. If you're unfamiliar with her research, here's a video below. She's been interested in the question of what has led some students to be in a "fixed mindset," where they don't believe that effort can improve their level of intelligence, while others can embrace a "growth mindset" and are more interested in learning than looking good.

If they are segregated,
it will be a poor plan for poor people.
