Greenland ice melts most in half-century: US

Greenland's ice sheet melted the most it has in over a half century last year, US government scientists said Tuesday in one of a series of "unmistakable" signs of climate change.

"The world continues to warm," the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said in a briefing paper for reporters.

"Multiple indicators, same bottom-line conclusion: consistent and unmistakable signal from the top of the atmosphere to the bottom of the oceans."

An annual climate survey, which includes work by scientists from 45 countries, said that ice sheet in Greenland melted at its highest rate since at least 1958, when similar data first became available.

Arctic sea ice shrank to its third smallest area on record, while the world's alpine glaciers shrank for the 20th straight year, the study said.

In line with previous studies, the survey said that 2010 was also one of the hottest years on record.

Last year was either tied for the hottest or the second hottest on record, depending on methodology. But all methodologies used showed the temperature to be at least 0.9 degrees Fahrenheit (0.5 Celsius) above the average recorded in the three decades through 1990.

The survey noted that 2010 was exceptional for its extreme events, including a deadly heat wave in Russia, floods in Pakistan that displaced more than 20 million people and record snowfall in several US cities.

A series of studies have voiced alarm at the rapid pace of melting in the Arctic Ocean, which could lead to a rise in sea levels that threatens low-lying coastal areas and islands.

The Oslo-based Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program said in May that warming in the Arctic was on track to lift sea levels by up to 5.3 feet (1.6 meters) by 2100, a far steeper jump than predicted a few years ago.

Many environmentalists have been disappointed at the pace of diplomacy to fight climate change, with few expecting a major agreement at the next major UN-led talks opening in South Africa in late November.

Former US vice president Al Gore recently accused President Barack Obama of failing to show leadership on climate change, saying that poor coverage of the media had given credibility to skeptics of global warming.

Mitigating pollution is a good thing whether or not you believe global warming is real.

The Viking warmup caused a population boom and great agricultural bounties in Europe.
When the little Ice Age followed this period, the Vikings were wiped and some joined the Inuits on Baffin Island. After the little Ice Age came the rainy rainy summers of
the 1300s. This created a population explosion of fleas and also caused crops to fail.
It is suggested that Europe was primed for the arrival of the Black Death by the odd temperature oscillations. 1/3 of Europe's population was wiped out by the Black Death. So those who say: the Viking warmup was a good thing, stay the course. I condemn you to the dustbin of history too.

all CO2 released from volcanic activity on the planet, both above water and under water = 200 million metric tonnes.
all CO2 released from volcanic activity on the planet, both above water and under water = 200 million metric tonnes.
all CO2 released from man made activities in 2003 = 26.3 billion metric tonnes.
this is all easily found with a quick internet search. the truth is we spew 150x as much CO2 into the atmosphere as all volcanic activity on the whole planet combined. the global cooling your referring to from those volcanos is from sulfur dioxide droplets reflecting the sun, it's also temporary and very damaging to the ozone layer. it also disrupts local weather patterns. the CO2 released is not temporary, it's cumulative. the oceans absorb most of it at the expense of acidification.
this is the absolute truth. i have nothing to gain from stating these facts. if you don't care, say you don't care. i don't have a problem with that. but denying we are damaging our atmosphere is idiocy. sure al gore tried to profit off of cap and trade, yes it's a horrible idea. but that doesn't mean global warming is a myth. and yes, we are the cause of the warming. you can't dump 150x the CO2 into the atmosphere as all volcanoes combined and not damage it.

ice covers about 660,000 square miles
average ice thickness is about 1.24miles
    660,000 x 1.24 = 818,400 cu miles of ice
reduce by 10% as ice is less dense than water
    736,560 cu miles of water
    divide by your ocean area
    736,560 / 140,000,000 = 0.00526 miles of water height increase
= 27.8 feet - about the number in the quote i found

Indisputable fact...CO2 levels have been on the rise for the last hundred years. (As records show)
Indisputable fact...CO2 fixers, the plant biosphere, is losing its largest contributors, the rainforests, at an alarming rate increasing even more the CO2 levels.
Indisputable fact...CO2 and other greenhouse gasses are in fact (contrary to bachman's 'science') greenhouse gasses which the increase of *will* increase the temperature of the world.

The first effects have already been seen:
Every summer there is more and more arctic ice melted, the average temperature of the world is 1.4F higher than 1880(1F in the last 30 years alone), the size & # glaciers have dropped drastically (an average rate of over 50%, some up to 86%, of glacial retreat), the rate of extreme weather patterns have increased markedly(a boiled pot churns and swirls), entire populations of animal migrating (polar bears, reindeer, and other polar animals), freeze and thaws occur several days/weeks earlier than recorded over a hundred years ago, sea levels have *already* risen an average of 6 inches, certain plants have been seen in areas never seen before (warmer varieties in previous colder areas), coral reefs are very (and I mean very) sensitive to temperature changes and there already been mass die off's, complete and partial, of several major reefs around the world.

Some people point out that volcanoes and other rare eruptions put out more CO2 than man does by a large margin...but they do not understand the balance. If say all the plants in the world fix out X amount of CO2 per year and volcanoes/eruptions put out 4 times X once every four years. Then you got mankind putting out .01X every year, its small but it does not get fixed or scrubbed out of the air - it builds up throwing the previous working balance out of whack (as well as mankind cutting down the rainforests at a high rate). The data and calculations are there for anyone to see, that is if you are smart enough to do the math. Long term analyses are easier to do and has less variables to calculate then say if its going to rain in new york next week so that is *not* an argument either.

Fact:No other nation in the world other than the USA has any sort of faction that disbelieves the science of climate change.
Fact:Right wing ignorants will always oppose it because they are *told* to by their masters. Forcing industry not to pump out CO2 and other greenhouse gasses is 'bad for business' so will *always* be opposed and not for any other reason, no matter that having oceans rushing in for hundreds of miles is also even more so bad for business the short term money grab is always preferred to actual planning for the future.

For Tracy who doesnt know how to measure temperature along time ago -

Oxygen isotope ratio cycles are cyclical variations in the ratio of the abundance of oxygen with an atomic mass of 18 to the abundance of oxygen with an atomic mass of 16 present in some substances, such as polar ice or calcite in ocean core samples. The ratio is linked to water temperature of ancient oceans, which in turn reflects ancient climates. Cycles in the ratio mirror climate changes in geologic history

Nothing is mentioned about the danger of too much fresh water in the North Atlantic. Too much fresh water could shut down the Gulf Stream. Nobody knows exactly what would happen but quite likely it would cause the N.E. U.S., Eastern Canada and Northern Europe to enter a little ice age while the rest of the world heats up. The more fresh water that enters the Atlantic, the longer the Gulf Stream shuts down. It might seem strange that as Atlanta is sizzling, NYC is freezing.

Climates change ... the earth changes constantly, sometimes slowly, sometimes not so slowly and sometimes for the betterment of human habitation and other times not. I live in a desert at an altitude above sea level. However, the mountain where my daughter and husband used to ride their horses has seashells everywhere at its summit.
Some humans have become extremely arrogant and very close to insanity in their desires to control every thing and every human on this planet.

I was always taught that the Earth cycles through periods of heating and cooling which take thousands of years to complete. History and science have given us the evidence of these cycles over and over with changing landscapes, adaptation or extinction of species, and lonf term yet gradual environmental adjustments. We cannot stop or hinder these cycles, and they cause violent atmospheric and geophysical events as we have been experiencing, and then the cycle will begin to reverse again over many thousands of years. The only difference between the past cycles and this cycle is that now, self serving and corrupt individuals and groups gave it a name, "global warming", and figuered out a way to turn it into leverage enabling them to build wealth and power off of a natural occurence. The greatest threat to humanity is not the cycle of the Earth, but those who exploit it out of greed and lust for power and control. There is nothing wrong with recycling or being a responsible consumer, I do it and hope most people do as well, but it won't stop the Earth's progression through it's own life cycle. Maybe man's time is just coming to a gradual end. It wouldnt be the first time that entire species have disappeared from Earth, and probably won't be the last.

And one more time despite the fact it will be futile. It is not the warming in itself that is concerning it is the speed of it which does not allow the humans (not enough money and resources) and the nature (not fast enough in migration and adaption) effected to react.
So please don't use this argument of "bla, bla, bla ..... we used to have ice age, bla, bla...., it is not addressing the problem. If you want to question something question the influence of humans on this accelerated change! Please show some deeper interest in research and the issue!

The story is a little misleading in that it appears to say that melting Arctic sea ice will raise sea levels. This is incorrect as Arctic sea ice is floating, and will not cause a change in sea level as it melts. However melting around the Arctic, eg. Greenland, glaciers, etc. into the sea will cause sea level rise.

It doesn't matter if global warming is caused by man or not. We have a real problem with polution that needs to be dealt with. I think many ####$### think if we are not the cause of global warming it is o.k. to carry on with buisiness as usual. This a very dangerous and is not acceptable.
