Birds at Fota

Thank you WordPress for putting my blog on Freshly Pressed! :-) Yay!!!! Some of you were asking where this is. I put a link up to the website on a previous post, but here it is again. It’s Fota Wildlife Park in Cork, Ireland.

Yesterday I gave you the giraffes and zebras, so today I’m giving you some of the birds! Obviously, seeing as it’s a wildlife park and birds fly around, they are all over the place. Here are some of them!

The ostrich and emu wander around the place. These ones were near the zebras and giraffes, but they could just as easily walk out on the path in front of you!

Ostrich and emu

Big Bird!

There are six ostrich chicks too, but they were too far away to get any shots of them and there are some eggs in the incubation room too!

BERJAYA

Peahen

They have two pairs of black swans and one pair have chicks. So fluffy!

Look at me!

I’ve no idea why there is a mirror behind the flamingos, but hey…!

Gonna get me some dinner!

This was the closest I could get to a parrot. I was walking along and just looked up and there he was!

  10. Great shots! I’ve never seen penguins in such a dry climate before! Neat post :)

  11. Research has shown that mirrors encourage flocks of flamingos to breed. They typically have to be in large groups (like 30 or more) or they won’t lay eggs or build nests. The mirrors make the birds think there are more of them. Hope that helped! Love the photos, BTW!

  65. Hey there! The pictures you have are great. I don’t know whether this is the reason why they have mirrors in their flamingo area, but this is why we did it at the zoo I work at:

The flamingos might have mirrors because many places are trying to breed their birds! However, flamingos only breed in groups of 15 or more. Some zoos with smaller numbers of flamingos try and use mirrors to trick the birds into believing there are many more individuals in their flocks so that they are more likely to reproduce.

Thanks for sharing some awesome pictures!
