The Crackdown on Voting, Pt. 1

As I wrote earlier, we're going to make the nationwide crackdown on voting one of the centerpieces of our 2012 campaign coverage. And here's a small but very illustrative part of the story. The new voting crackdown law in Florida is so restrictive that even the League of Women Voters (about as old-line, mainstream and establishment a group as you can get) has dropped its voter registration plans in the state.

As Deirdre MacNabb, president of the Florida League of Women Voters, told TPM in a phone interview this week: "when we looked at the laws, we felt that this would put our thousands of volunteers across the state who have registered voters for 70 years in Florida at a grave disadvantage."

Getting Comical

Republicans demanding Obama protect seniors from consequences of default.

I'm getting the sense that Republicans have only just now realized that the debt default they've been jonesing for for six weeks amounts to a thermonuclear government shutdown. Not just national parks and monuments. Social Security checks, Medicare reimbursements, payments to defense contractors who make the bullets. The whole deal.
