The Pokemon Company has announced that Nintendo's iconic Pokemon franchise is heading to the iPhone and Android marketplace. The app, called Pokemon Ie Tap?, is reportedly a rhythm game where players time beats to songs based on the popular anime. Currently the app is only scheduled for release in Japan.
Naturally this news calls into question Nintendo's larger strategy for content release. Is the company willing to move into the mobile market, despite the fact that it's just launched a new portable system and has always maintained its software is exclusive for its systems?
Nintendo says "no" - it remains committed to supporting its consoles and portables exclusively. According to a Bloomberg report, Nintendo stated that Pokemon Company is a separate entity, free to make its own business decisions. The company added that there are "no plans for a change" regarding supporting outside platforms with Nintendo-produced content.
Nintendo's stock rose when the app was announced. The company owns 32% of Pokemon Company as well as part of the franchise's trademark.
