“Massive jobs boost”: 200 new jobs in Suffolk

Evening Star has reported that the Government’s “Future Jobs Fund” will create 200 new jobs in Suffolk.
SUFFOLK’S future looked bright today after the announcement of 200 new jobs for young people.
The county council has been given the go-ahead to create the vacancies in waste and environmental work, the voluntary sector, arts and culture, general admin, social care and youth work.
Role will include library assistants, assistant rangers, and heritage and tourism positions.
The new posts were among more than 600 created across the East of England and 7,500 in the country as part of the government’s £1billion Future Jobs Fund (FJF).
They bring the total number of jobs created through FJF to almost 55,000.
It is good that new jobs are created but I have a few concerns:
- “200 new jobs for young people” – it is not lawful for employers including local government to discriminate on applicants. This means either there will be 200 new jobs for young people (assumingly up to 25 years old) and no one else will get a look in or most of these 200 new jobs will go straight to the older age groups leaving the young people unemployed and having to do a make-believe sham “training” course.
- “Massive jobs boost” – Suffolk has around half a million population, I would personally criticise “200″ jobs as being massive. This is in effect around 8 new jobs advertised a week (I presume all will be listed within 6 months) and the job market has picked up on new vacancies advertised all the time. It is a job boost, BIG but not massive.
- How sustainable? These jobs are likely to be one year terms (with provision to be extended permanently by a year at a time “subject to funding”) i.e. they will be advertised as permanent but actually will be technically temporary as it isn’t ongoing. So once the recessions dips off the jobs will be pulled. The employees will just get a letter between 1-4 weeks at the end of the year saying the council has chosen not to renew their contract.Sustainable jobs are required whereas a job for a year is better than agency jobs and those with a duration of between a month and half a year, it isn’t going to stop the person signing on the dole again. A temporary “solution” – why did they call it the future jobs fund if only for the present year?
- Fulltime jobs or… ? 200 fulltime jobs sound great but there is high chance that a lot of the jobs will be part time. I have seen library assistants and assistant rangers advertised before. The assistant ranger was 8-16 hours I believe and the position at my local library was just for a Sunday (I considered it but had to decline as I would be worse off than on benefits).
- Voluntary Sector – Local government is the public sector/statutory sector not the third sector (as charities and non-profit businesses belong to). This seriously concerns me as perhaps unpaid positions are being created for Flexible New Deal. This is not a “job” – it is unpaid and not sustainable.

These jobs are being created to provide cheap labour for local councils albeit the person is on min wage but its still cheap labour same as new deal with local councils they will take via new deal placements but if you apply for a job with the council and put new deal on your application form all you get is a rejection letter thats my experience with fife council i applied for 20 jobs and got absolutely nothing out of it despite having been with fife council twice on new deal seems to me there is some kind of fiddle going on here if they wont consider anyone who has been on new deal who applied for fife council vacancies

37 Hrs per week (£14,564-£15,923)
Sub Limit: 299 (Jobcentre sends this amount of people to the job)
Temporary for 11 months.
Patrolling all the parks (and open spaces) to ensure a high standard of order by the public, acting as a deterrent against Anti Social behaviour and to act as security maintaining standards of safety.
They don’t have a clue… this is a job to be created just for the sake of it. In a nutshell you will be working as a cheap PCSO without any legal powers for all open spaces in Ipswich.
How many open spaces in Ipswich? This is just what I can brainstorm without any research (some areas might be outside Ipswich Borough i.e. wouldn’t be in the role of the person – probably isn’t fully inclusive):
